Anyone else have any thoughts about what they would like to see return to the fore of gaming?
Not exactly "gender" but i miss those "Eye of Beholder"-like labirynths based on squares. Man, i'm sick of 3d/tpp crpgs. After a while they all seem to be one and the same game. :|

3D Platformers. Alice: Madness Returns was nice, but it was really just a faint shadow of the fun platformers from the N64 era.

Good old adrenaline rush sci-fi space shooters, not the FPS kind, but the scrolling map kind, with lots of eye-searing visuals and a pumping techno/trance sound-track.

I also miss a good beat-'em-up, a la Streets of Rage.

Platformers a big huggy bunch.
I've been replaying Okami and now all of a sudden im craving Platformers , proper stealth games aswell...And i guess a little Adventure games like Syberia or The Longest Journey (Although i have never played TLJ...i really want to, i just can't find the game anywhere besides steam, but steam only has the first game and i want to play it and it's sequel.)

Rayman Origins is a stellar new platformer. There's a ton of them on PSN/XBLA as well.

Space combat. I loved X-Wing VS Tie Fighter on PC and put TONS of hours into StarFox 64. These games are great.

Beat-em-up. Even "newer" beat-em-ups like Scott Pilgrim and Castle Crashers intentionally throw back to exact same mechanics that older beat-em-ups used. With today's tech, interesting twists could be put in the genre.

JRPG. Yes, I know that there are JRPGs still around, but nearly all of them suck. I know I'm just being nostalgic here, but I miss the days when names like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III(VI), Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VII, etc...DEFINED the RPG. Nowadays games like Skyrim define RPG, which I have no issue with, but I miss the days when a game could lay out a fun, deep, and engaging story that, while linear, was just great.

TURN BASED STRATEGY.

Most particularly tactical turn based strategy, ala X-Com and Jagged Alliance.

2K Marin can go die in a fire, thanks.
have you tried silent storm?
while not as brilliant as JA, it is quite good, and highly moddable(which is required because one particular design choice for the later stages of the game just sucks)

i also miss proper 4X games, yes galciv was good and sins was fun to play with friends but the gold standard for this genre is still MOO2

I've been wanting to play a good turn-based strategy game with actual characters for a while. Sure they're still out there, but I feel like not enough of it is getting any attention. The new Fire Emblem coming out should be a good one, but are there any others out there? I just love the feeling of commanding units that actually feel like they have a purpose and personality. If there's some games that I'm missing, that would be pretty awesome, but the other games I've played like this (other than Valkyria Chronicles) just seem sort of bland.

A lot of the games you are talking about are still released on a regular basis. You'll have to pick up a nintendo DS though.

Open world space sims such as Wing Commander Privateer and Starflight. People talk about hating railroading and linearity, well then we should get this genre back. No one is more free than a space outlaw. Even birds can't go into space, which means you're actually more free than a bird. What happened to running around the whole galaxy with no objectives and most of the time, no rules?

Now all we're trying to do is recreate all of the worst aspects of real life. Next thing you know, there will be a GTA game, but committing any such act would get you 3 stars or something, and you'd also have to go through the morning routine every time you saved, plus you'd have to wash dishes and buy groceries and stuff, and go to your dingy 9 to 5 office job where all you do is file papers or something. And you wouldn't be able to break any traffic laws either, because doing so would get you a star and a fine. And if you hit a police car, you'd end up in jail for 10 days. And you'd also have to get gas for the car too. Oh by the way, the gas and the jail things? People are actually asking for those to be in the next GTA. And traffic laws too.

I miss 2D platformers like mega man games (before capcom took a shit to the series and its fan base but that's for another story) and contra games since games these days are too easy to have a satisfaction when i beat a game.

Also I miss JRPG like the old days because most of games these days sucks except for lost Odyssey and tales of vesperia. I mean when the last time we got one of those? FF13 and FF14 came out last year and nearly killed the genre. JRPG now is a total joke to the industry and it's hard for the developers to localize their games to the US/EU (like Operation Rainfall games and Tales of Xillia).

Hey that means I can finally put my 3DS to use. Can you name any specific titles?

I miss space sims, Freespace, X-Wing Vs Tiefighter, etc. It's been years since a new one was released.

Very sad monkey

I seem to remember the X games being very popular in this genre?

I also miss Freespace 1 and 2, they were AMAZING games, and would be amazing if they could be bought back with current gen graphics. So fun and action packed, yet not arcadey in any way.
