The best soundtrack ever?

Well, my personal favorite right now is Metal Gear Rising. Absolutely fucking amazing, in my opinion. Seriously! Listen to this and not want to have a robot sword fight, I dare you.

And that's just one!

Love orchestra stuff, though.

It's fast approaching two decades old at this point, but Final Fantasy VI still holds the title in my opinion.
The whole of the soundtrack is magnificent, but what seals the deal is legendary Aria di Mezzo Carattere.

Aria di Mezzo Carattere[/youtube]

Many games with great music have come and gone, but nothing I've encountered has quite captured the magic of that one scene. The soundtrack wasn't just atmospheric (as with most modern games), nor was it an enjoyable bit on it's own; for a few minutes, the music took centre stage and single-handedly stole the show. In my opinion at least, no game can claim the title of "greatest video game soundtrack" until it usurps the Aria di Mezzo Carattere... well, that and the entire soundtrack of FFVI.

Shall we look at a few more examples, a choice collection of favourites?

Yes, those are (predominantly) matching the MIDI-quality of the original soundtrack. Still damn good after all these years, no real "upgrade" for a full orchestra needed to make it sound better... but what if one were to promote FFVI's soundtrack to the full treatment? Well, that's already happened. Shall we see how good that makes it?

Just a quick note, this applies to the full opera sequence. The Aria di Mezzo Carattere from earlier is contained within this.

Just to wonder, what if Final Fantasy VI got the full HD remake treatment?

One can dream, one can dream...

For an actual soundtrack, that is not atmospheric/orchestral score kinda of stuff, my money would be firmly on Brutal Legends OST.

I'm surprised bands like Slough Feg actually made it on there.

Just one game in a series?
Fire Emblem: Awakening. Motivational and animate music has always been a part of the series but this game nailed it with in-and-out of battle switch and nicely-made tracks above all.
The Warcraft RTS series, especially with Warcraft 3, did a good job in sounding kickass and giving character to the factions with music.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for unique tracks and improving Bloody Tears. SotN was too "edgy" for my tastes.

Wait. We've gotten this far without going for a game that mashed style and music into one sweet bundle with over 10 different battle themes that were chosen randomly, and features songs with vocals, all while not being grating to the ears, and japanese at the same time? The World Ends With You!

I tried to put a youtube video here! It finally worked!

With music like this, It's a Wonderful World.

Honestly though their are only 2 games that I felt had the best sound track:

Super Metroid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcL70l8MkV8

Extreme G for the N64: This game is on my top 3 favorite games of all time, the music and difficulty was fucking epic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ2Vb1t1-Js&list=PL5B82515552B35BE3

It is a play list give them all a try. btw do NOT listen to while driving or shooting guns.

It's either Shadow of the Colossus or Metroid Prime's. All atmospheric, memorable, and they have pretty strong melody's.
