The Dark Knight Rises. I'm still not sure what my full judgement of the movie is, but the soundtrack is absolutely awesome. Nolan and Zimmer know exactly what each other wants to do in a scene.
It was already mentioned, but Journey's soundtrack has me absolutely mesmerized.
Also, Shadow of the Colossus has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. I even enjoy the unused songs quite a bit, but the ones used in game have a sort of synergistic effect with the gameplay, which makes the experience go beyond the sum of its parts.
The mass majority of the music I listen to comes from video game soundtracks, so I'm going to mention a few games with soundtracks that i enjoy without giving examples, though I don't think I'll necessarily cover all of them: Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, all the Donkey Kong Country games, Okami, Bastion, Mega Man 2, all the Professor Layton games, Most of the Monkey Island games (especially 1 and 2), Grim Fandango, the Sam&Max games, Radiant Historia, most Final Fantasy games (especially early ones), the Kingdom Hearts games, the Legend of Zelda games, and I think I'm still forgetting a bunch of them.
I rather enjoyed that album too! I love when orchestras handle video game soundtracks with such respect.
Have you by any chance listened to Symphonic Fantasies? It is, by far, my favorite collection of medleys in existence. I got my hands on an actual CD of it, and it is a prized possession of mine, I enjoy it so much. It has a medleys of Kingdom Hearts, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger/Cross, and Final Fantasy, not to mention a fantastic boss battle medley as an encore.
I'm going to link the Chrono Medley, since I consider it the absolute highlight of the soundtrack. Apparently, when it was performed live, people were giving standing ovations in tears during the final minutes of the piece, and it's brought me pretty damn close just listening to high quality recordings of it.
PS. I'm a percussionist, and I thoroughly love Rony Barrak's performance on the Darbouka in this piece (and in the encore). The other featured artist, Benyamin Nuss, is also pretty fantastic on piano, if you ask me,
It's always nice to see people of such skill and talent lending their expertise to video games to create soundtracks to rival the greatest films and scores :3.
As for Symphonic Fantasies, I hadn't heard of them before now but I'll deffinately give 'em a look. I don't think they'll resonate on the same level as the London Orchestra for me due to the fact the LPO have featured some of my favourite games, but I'm assuming it's the other way round for you .
