I don't often completely give up on a game(I'm too stubborn for that...), but some have irked me enough that I just can't be bothered anymore.
Darksiders: Unbelievably tedious dungeons, particularly the last one. (At least I hope it was the last one...)
Ninja Gaiden 2: Finished the first and thought it was challenging but fair. The second was just a load of spammy bollocks. I stopped bothering when the rapid-fire homing rocket launcher guys showed up.
Guitar Hero 5: Bit of an odd one, but the tracklist was just so dreadful that I never made it through the career mode.

I lost interest in Company of Heroes. I keep planning to finish but... meh.

Gave up on Just Cause 2. I didn't like or care about the characters, I barely understood what was going on and the one gameplay mechanic that was interesting got old fast. Also it is possible to have too big a game world.

The very first was Oblivion, but it's becoming more frequent lately with New Vegas and DNF.

I miss being able to play through games completely regardless of their actual quality. Those were the days.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl - Actually a good game, I just lost interest. Got some way past the monolith and couldn't be bothered anymore. Not sure why.

Hyperdimension Neptunia - Setting a percentage of chance for item usage? Compile Heart, do you hate me? If not, would you consider making some good design choices some time in the next decade? Thanks.

Risen - On some level, I get it. You're trying to do the whole German RPG thing, that's fine, but there are still some serious issues. First off, your combat is fucking terrible. Secondly, all your quests are boring fetch quests and "kill x monsters for y items". Thirdly, the level up system is ridiculous. You have to pay money to level up your skills. That wouldn't be so bad except nothing drops money. I would trade items for cash but none of the merchants have any either.

Okay, that's not entirely accurate, but my point is that it's a needless complication that doesn't add any depth to the game. Also bugs.

The Witcher 1 - Not a "hardcore" RPG like people are saying. It's actually a lot closer to something like Gothic 4 crossed with Fable. Yeah, it has menus. Doesn't give the combat any more depth. I would put up with it if I liked anything about the gameplay, story, world or characters, but I don't. Also the fans keep using "it's based on a long-running series of Polish fantasy novels!" as a defense for some of the bullshit and Mary Sue-isms of the protagonist. That's not an excuse. Stop thinking it is.

Far Cry 2 - ...

Just Cause 2 - I feel like I should explain this: I like games that are full of nonsense and explosions too. For whatever reason, this just wasn't very fun for me. When all the destructible buildings are painted with red "EAT ME" paint, it's not very satisfying. At some point you're basically just level grinding.

Some GBA One Piece game. And Mario. For some reason, I can do all other platformers except those two.

Modern Warfare I & 2, BF2-BC.
Or, how to take predictable B-movie concepts and try to make them seem interesting by making the player follow the protagonist's script. Rails are the opposite of interesting for me. I did finally grind through each, but I was very much grinding through them rather than playing.

Oblivion. Played for a few afternoons, and when I realised I'd rather mow the lawn than keep playing it I went and sold it back. I wasn't having any fun with it.

Resident Evil 5. I've been telling myself that I'll go back to it but I've been doing that for over a year now. I had RE4 for the Wii and loved the controls - by contrast RE5's PS3 controls suck ass. Plus the inventory's retarded, though not as much as my AI partner. Frustrating game, all around.

Half-Life 2 might be falling into that category. It's been on my "will get back to" list for quite a while now and I feel no motivation whatsoever to play it.

I'm usually very picky with the games I buy, so this doesn't happen very often for me, but let's see...

Shadow of the Colossus. Certainly not a difficult game, but a tedious one. Gave up on the last colossus out of frustration and annoyance. I knew what I had to do, but the clunky controls made it too difficult to bother. SotC is also the game that made me realize I don't enjoy puzzle games. I've always wanted to love it, but I couldn't get past the few big problems I had with it.

FFXII. Again the final boss... he kicked my ass a few times, and shortly after I bought my PS3 and never motivated myself enough to pull out my PS2 again to finish it. Ok ok, I guess I haven't completely given up on it, as I really enjoyed the game, I just never finished it. It's different.

Half Life 2. After the excessive hype from everyone, I decided to install it, and after many problems trying to install it on my laptop (Steam for mac always gives me troubles) I finally installed it on my family computer at home. Played it a little bit, seemed so-so to me, and considering how I'm in college and rarely home (and when I am home I spend time with my family, not play games), I've given up trying to play it. I've seen other people play it and never impressed me, and playing it myself didn't impress me either, so I really don't think I'm going to bother. I'll throw it on the "was an amazing game back in the day" pile and move on.

So yeah... Just Shadow of the Colossus and Half Life 2. Admitting that surely won't bring any nerd rage my way!

Its rare i'll stop due to difficulty, but i will if the game is awful, no fun or just not my think. to recent memory thats included:
Dark siders,
Dante Inferno,
Dragon Age 2

EDIT, also shadow of the colosus; looked untidy having the PS2 sandwiched in my set up, so put it away and will get SOTC HD release

Captcha: between hestax
I was looking at darksiders, idea seems interesting. Whats wrong with it ?
Basically, its an extremely generic hack and slash, its not bad, but its not doing anything not done before and therfore not worth full price of a game IMO

Mass Effect...

I want to like it. I should like it. I just can't get into it.

I've played through the game 4 times now, hoping that it might get me into it, but I just find it utterly boring. :(

Lots of games falls into that category, but some of the latest include Burnout Paradise and Knights of the Old Republic (dunno why really, just felt dull after Mass Effect. Maybe i should give it a another go some day)

buh... buh... buh... buh...buh... buh...buh... buh...buh... buh...buh... buh... HOW CAN YOU NOT UTTERLY FALL IN LOVE WITH KoToR IMMEDIATELY!!

My mind can't comprehend how one cannot adore that game. It is simply one of the greatest RPG's ever made.
I had almost exactly the same reaction to KOTOR. I'm still slogging through it because some of the characters are alright and I want to see the big twist people keep referring to in reverent tones. But it's basically just a chore. I feel like I'm playing Mass Effect: Crappy d20 Edition. Plus, the Star Wars setting weighs the game down like a pair of cement shoes.

While I love those games and am inclined to defend them, that last line made me laugh.

...

OT:

Psychonauts.
Yeah, it's got a good visual design going on and it's thematically interesting. But the gameplay was boring and the humour just wasn't doing it for me. I didn't give a damn about the story or characters either. So when it started glitching out on me I was glad for an excuse to give up.

Section 8: Prejudice.
I bought this after the Escapist gave it a glowing review. Quite frankly, I don't know what the reviewer was smoking. It is the most boring shooter I have had the misfortune to encounter in quite some time. The review even said that the story and characters were fun... they really aren't. The story was cookie-cutter material and I can't even remember a single character, let alone tell you exactly why they sucked. When I discovered that the vehicle controls suck, I ditched the game in a heartbeat.

I don't really regret the purchase since it was only $15, but that is the last time I take a reviewer's word against my own gut feeling.

At this rate I'd say Alpha Protocol. It was simply no fun for me, it looked like it should have been on PS2 also. Maybe one day. Doubt it.

Demon's Souls

Played it through once, never again. This doesn't mean I hated it, quite the contrary, but the initial playthrough revealed everything I wanted to experience from the game, so I don't feel the need to play it ever again.

Dragon Age 2. I played through it once, but unlike Origins I have absolutely no desire to play the game ever again. It wasn't awful, just mediocre and I'd rather just play Origins or another RPG again.
