If the title isn't clear, I'm asking why you bought each console that you've owned. I'm assuming that it's usually because of a certain game or two, but if it's because of something else feel free to mention that instead.

For me...

[b/]Game Boy:[/b] This one I didn't actually get because of a specific game, but more a matter of me wanting something to do as a kid whilst my family was doing something I considered boring (out to dinner, at adult friends' houses, etc).

Nintendo 64: Played Goldeneye at a friend's house. Absolutely had to have that game for myself. Lucky for me, my birthday was only a month or so away at the time.

Xbox: I had to have Halo, simple as that. It wasn't quite what they were originally talking it up to be, but damn I loved it. It was the only game I had for a few months and I didn't even care.

Playstation 3: I wanted GTA 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4, but also I wanted to be able to play sports games (Madden, NHL). MGS 4 was the only exclusive there, but I was also pretty keen on getting a Blu-Ray player.

Edit: I also have a Wii. Got this because Twilight Princess looked great (and after not having a Gamecube, I missed Zelda) and yes, I wanted to play some Wii Sports.

So for me,

-PS Vita, it was shiny and powerful (at launch) so I had to have one so no game in particular.
-3DS Xl, Super Mario 3D Land and Luigis Mansion 2
-Xbox 360, the Halo Series mainly plus Gears of War before it got old after and during three.
-PS4, the Resistance and Killzone Series.

I guess I just like a good scifi shooter, I only buy consoles for exclusives though because everything multi-platform I get for my PC instead.

Let's see... in the broadest terms:

I wanted a Gamecube for Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.

I wanted a PS2 for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

I wanted an Xbox for Fable, Halo, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

I wanted the various Gameboys for Pokemon.

I wanted a PSP for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

I wanted a PS Vita for Gravity Rush and Persona 4 Golden.

I wanted a PS3 for most games at the time, since it was before I had a PC for playing games.

I wanted an Xbox 360 for Halo and Gears of War.

I wanted a 3DS for Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance.

I think that about covers it. Other games have certainly justified my purchase of said consoles over time, but I believe those are what tended to be at the forefront of my mind when I thought about each specific platform.

Kingdom Hearts sold me on the PS2. It was the first big purchase I ever made in my life. I was so nervous because I had been saving for so long.

360 was the Orange Box. Because holy crackers, that game collection was awesome! Plus, I finally got to play Episode 1. And Halo 3.

PS3...uh, actually, I bought it because I found out that it was no longer going to be backward compatible. I grabbed the last one off of the shelf at Target, then slowly built my collection.

Let me see:

Gameboy advance: both legend of zelda oracle games.

PS2: I played Kingdom Hearts at a friends house and was hooked and wanted to finish the game myself.

game cube: legend of zelda: wind waker (admittedly when I first saw screenshots of the game I was completely against it, but I came around after seeing reviews)

xbox 360: GTA 4 and The Orange Box

PS3: was MGS4 and Demon's Souls

The only reason I own a 360 is to play Dead Rising.

Jak and Daxter and Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness (didn't know it was crap at the time) made me want a PS2.

A lot of things sold me on the Wii. Namely Zelda TP and Disaster:DOC (F*** you NOA :/).

Playing Wario Ware at a kiosk is what made me buy a DS.

I actually got LittleBigPlanet before I got a PS3. If that tells you anything.

Xbox 360 - I wanted to get one because I had played on one for the better part of two years at a friend's house. Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Dead Rising, Gears of War and The Simpsons Game (which is still awesome) brought me to it (I got it around Christmas 2007).

Xbox One - Dead Rising 3, Titanfall and Destiny and I was not disappointed with DR3.

PlayStation 2 - Some PS2 classics, but primarily the Silent Hill series. My first four games on it were Silent Hill 2-4 and Hitman 2 (which came with the console).

I know I don't own these ones but I will, so I won't waste the opportunity.

I'm going to get a PS3 soon. I'll want to play The Last of Us, InFAMOUS and I already own Heavy Rain (relative giving some games away).

I plan on getting a Wii U in the future, ZombiU and Bayonetta 2 are my big reasons for getting one.

It's amazing how I can remember it very clearly! Pretty much the game I bought as the same time as the system.

PlayStation 2 - Kingdom hearts. I used to play KH a lot at my cousin's house, as soon as I got the chance to get the PS2 it was the first game that came to mind. My first legit gaming purchase too!
PSP - Tales of Eternia. I was a huge fan of Tales of Destiny 2.
DS - Trauma Centre, but I pretty much got it just because it was a shiny new thing and I was young.
Xbox 360 - Dead rising and Halo 2. Always wanted to play Halo games, 'heard 2 was the best one and I remember Dead Rising's trailer looked so amazing back then!
Playstation 3 - Heavenly sword, it looked like God of War on the Ps3, so yeah.
PS Vita - Soul Sacrifice! The concept art looked sick!
3DS - Fire emblem: Awakening, enough said. First party Nintendo games don't interest me as much.

I'm getting a WiiU as soon as Bayonetta 2 comes out too, and to play Xenoblade Chronicle, the game that everyone was raving about.

Hmm well I'll just put "N/A" for systems I didn't get for one particular game, usually means I had them as a kid not just for myself.

NES - N/A, first console I had as a wee kid. Was already old then but t'was new to me.

SNES - N/A, Xmas gift.

N64 - Castlevania Legacy of Darkness / Castlevania 64

Gamecube - The Gameboy Player (does that count?)

GBA - N/A, Xmas gift.

DS- Castlevania Trilogy

PS1 - N/A, birthday gift.

PS2 - N/A, originally was the cheapest DVD player that could be bought at the time.

Sega Master System - N/A, bought at a used store for $2.50

Sega Genesis - Castlevania Bloodlines

Sega Saturn - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night port, Darkstalkers 2

Sega Dreamcast - Sword of the Berserk: Guts Rage

Atari 2600 - N/A, or Space Cavern [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeRn161Ptyo], yeah, we'll go with that. Oh and Frankenstein's Monster. That game rocks, in fact it's in my 2600 right now

When I eventually get a PS3, 90% of the reason will be Sly Cooper 4. 5% will be to finally get a blu-ray player, 5% will be for Bayonetta. If Sly 4 had come out earlier in the consoles lifecycle I would have bought it then.

Let's see:

Gameboy Color: Saw a kid playing Pokemon Yellow at school. It looked fun. It was.

Gamecube: Played some super smash bros Melee with someone. That game was the shit.

Gameboy advanced: Lost my gameboy color, so my dad got this as a replacement. Pokemon helped.

Nintendo DS: because it was the next gameboy. Only got Super Mario 64 DS at launch.

Wii: Because it was the next home console for ninty. Twilight Princess didn't hurt either.

Xbox 360: Technically my dad's and he got it for Bioshock and the Orange Box. I got it for Eternal Sonata.

Gaming PC: Too play more Company of Heroes, but mostly because my highschool best friend got me a copy of TF2.

PSP: Valkyria Chronicles and Persona 3 Portable

3DS: Virtue's last Reward and Fire Emblem: Awakening

Megadrive: Sonic
PS: Nothing particularly but I remember playing a lot of Spyro: Year of the dragon
GBA: Pokemon ruby
PS2: Final fantasy X and shadow of the colossus
3DS: Monster hunter 3 ultimate (and, at the time, the blind hope for monster hunter 4)

Thats about it.

I've not owned that many consoles.

GBA: Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Pokémon Sapphire
PS2: Gran Turismo, GTA, Prince of Persia
PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4 and the hopes of getting a new Gran Turismo game
DS: Pokémon Platinum

I'm considering picking up a 360 just for the Forza games, I'm probably in the minority on this site, but driving games are probably my favourite genre.

I made the switch from Sony to Microsoft pretty much because of Dead Rising. I'd loved the original Playstation and PS2 growing up, and it kind of bummed me out when the PS3 dropped backwards compatibility--but mostly I just wanted to throw household objects at zombies, I guess.

Hah, eventual terrible luck with almost each example...

Dreamcast - Sword of the Berserk: Well, it's Dreamcast, enough reason here. However, Berserk still has no ending.

XBOX - Shenmue 2: HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! Nope, not Halo, Halo is the reason I KEPT it.

PS2 - Final Fantasy 10: I hated this game, I bought it on nostalgia for the series.

Game Cube - Fire Emblem: Okay...this was a pretty good one that satisfied...moving on...

XB360 - Mass Effect: ME3 ending...enough said.

PS3 - MGS4: Okay, solid choice here as well.

PS4 - Watch Dogs (eventually): honestly, I just bought it b/c I had expiring gift cards, but the game I want is Watch Dogs.

Gamecude: Zelda: Collector's Edition

Wii: Nothing, just have always been a huge Nintendo Fanboy

X360: Halo 3 and Gears of War

PS3: Uncharted originally sold me on it, then I got terribly let down by it. I have since turned into a hugely outspoked critic against Uncharted. However, I am glad that I did get it, because of Infamous and Journey.

3DS: No "actual" games sold me, just the announcement of games: Fire Emblem Awakening, Phoenix Wright 5, and Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton.

And finally, I joined the PC Gaming Master Race(tm) for Starcraft 2. I had just gotten my A+ cert, was working with a huge SC2 nut, and figured I'd use my knowledge to build a PC that could play SC2. Once I had this computer, I sought out to see what other games I could run on it.

These aren't all the consoles/portables I own, but the ones I chose to get for games that were out:

DS - New Super Mario Bros 1 (Mega Mushroom sold me on it, lol)
Wii - Super Paper Mario (funny story: I picked up Zelda: Twilight Princess as a secondary game and now like the latter more)
Xbox 360 - Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 (my first HD games)
PS Vita - Tearaway (and PS Plus games in general)
Wii U - Super Mario 3D World (almost counting New Super Mario Bros U and ZombiU, but they were bundled)
