Gonna skip the Gameboy, since I got it before I knew of really any games.

Same with N64 actually, got it one Christmas but I didn't know of its library.

Wanted a Gamecube for Wind Waker.

Wanted a PS2 for Shadow of the Colossus.

Wanted a DS for...probably Kirby: Canvas Curse.

Wanted a PS3 for Final Fantasy XIII.

Wanted a Wii for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Wanted a Wii U for Pikmin 3 (and in anticipation for X)

Currently need a PS4 for Final Fantasy XV.

SNES for Super Mario World

Sega Genesis for Sonic 2

N64 for Mario 64 and Star Fox 64.

Gameboy for Pokemon Red and Blue

Gameboy Advance for Super Mario Advance(which is the remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 US)

Gamecube for Super Smash Bros. Melee and Star Wars: Rogue Leader

PS2 for God of War and Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith game(a bit embarrassing to admit) though that game had some cool moments.

DS for Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Wii for Twilight Princess even though I knew I would have preferred the Gamecube version before I even played the Wii version. >.>

XBox 360 for Halo 1 and 2 via backwards compatibility and Gears of War.

PSP for God of War: Chains of Olympus, more of my brother's desire than mine.

PS3 for the promise of God of War 3 and Killzone 2, again, my brother was more excited to get these games, Killzone especially.

Got an old NES for various NES games like Mega Man, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden etc.

3DS for Ocarina of Time 3D

Wii U for the promise of Pikmin 3, and other first party Nintendo games.

Here's what I think:

Project X Zone for the 3DS

Muramasa Rebirth, Persona 4: Golden, and Ys: Memories of Celceta for the PS Vita

I plan on getting a Wii U for Smash Bros, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2 & Super Mario 3D World

Killer Instinct 2013 and Crimson Dragon are the reasons why I plan on getting an Xbone eventually

Every single steam game I have that requires a decent rig (Alan Wake, Just Cause 2, Witcher 2, etc.) convinced me to eventually get a good gaming PC.

Well I had a NES, N64 and Gamcube because I was a big Nintendo fan when I started playing video games, so getting the 'next' nintendo console made sense to me.

Don't remember how I got my Sega Genesis, but I only had an XMEN game for it and the Sonic games.

The reason I got a PS2 after the Gamecube isn't for a particular game, but rather I was more mature in age and wanted to play more mature games as I felt a lot of Nintendos stuff was getting a little childish for me.

I got a Xbox 360 over the PS3 because I looked at all the launch titles and decided which ones overall looked more appealing. I guess you could say the Halo series and Gears of War kind of sold me on the 360, maybe even Perfect Dark Zero, as I loved the original for the N64. I later got a PS3 because my taste in games changed and I just overall prefered all the PS3 stuff over the 360. I no longer play the Halo games and I stopped playing Gears of War after the first one. I also lost interest in online gaming, which is mostly what I did on 360.

I plan on getting a Wii U and PS4 for my future consoles. There has never been ONE game that has sold a console, the closest would be the Halo series for 360 or Sonic series for the Sega Genesis.

*Oh I forgot my Gameboy Colour/Gameboy Advanced. I only ever used my Gameboy Colour to play Pokemon games. So that would actually be my best example of a game making me buy a 'console'.

Mario 64 for DS - DS. I was basically lured by the promise of good 3d games (which the DS has very few of. the DS has some good games, but most of the good ones are 2d. What I was really expecting at the time was the kind of graphics the 3ds is capable of)

Gameboy Pocket - My brothers had a bunch of games for their gameboys, and I wanted one for myself. I think the game that really drew me in to the gameboy pocket was Link's Awakening. Got Pokemon Blue as a gift before it got super popular, I think I sank more time into that than any other game for gameboy.

Gameboy Color - nothing in particular. The best games for it (oracle of seasons and ages, and pokemon silver and gold) came out after I got it.

Gameboy Advance - Once again, all the best games that I got (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Golden Sun 2) came out after I got it. My first game was Rayman Advance, which looked really good on the GBA, but is still one of the hardest games I've ever played.

--Then I grew up and no longer felt like I could justify to myself paying that much money for a handheld.

N64 - I got it late, but the main reason was Ocarina of Time for nostalgia reasons.

Gamecube - nothing in particular. I actually really didn't like the look of windwaker and I didn't get it till much later, though I think it's now the best game on that platform.

Wii - I was drawn in by the motion controls. I still don't hate motion controls as much as the rest of the internet (or 3d for that matter), but I can't really think of a single wii game that I would label as my favorite. I really made use of the retro-games on the wiistore though (I grew up on NES, so it was cool to play those again on the TV).

Xbox - my brother got it, I think he was thinking of Madden at the time (since they no longer sell madden for pc). Skyrim's my favorite on this platform.

Since Nintendo's recent demise, I've become mostly a PC gamer.

Now that was fun to write and think about, but I don't really expect anyone to read this.

Good thread, I can dig it.

NES- It was given to me by my mom and dad, so nothing sold me on it.

SNES- Super Mario World. Thank god I went with the SNES over the Genesis, otherwise I would've never discovered some of my favorite franchises, which would then inform my future purchases.

PS1- Final Fantasy 7. While not my favorite of the franchise, it was a damn fine game for it's time, and one I still replay every couple years.

PS2- Honestly, I think it was brand loyalty that brought me to the PS2, but glad that I picked it up. I discovered tons of outstanding new franchises and titles I would've otherwise missed.

PS3- Final Fantasy 13. You know, back when it was announced as an exclusive. Yeah, the game was a dud, but the console itself brought me outstanding new IPs like Uncharted, and another great God of War title to rampage through.

X360- Mass Effect. At the time, it was exclusive and it was the only game I wanted to play. Also ran L4D into the ground for a good while, but the console never saw much action past those two franchises.

PSP- Ahhhh, I can't really remember why I bought this, but I had fun with it for a time.

PS Vita- Persona 4 Golden. I missed the PS2 release of this title, having found out about Persona late in the game. Played P3P to death on my PSP, and was expecting more fun with P4G. I was not disappointed.

PS4- inFamous: Second Son. I was a sucker for the first two games, and it's the first new gen exclusive that has me excited for the new games coming over the next five years.

Playstation was my first console. Got it when I was six or seven. Didn't know anything about it before iirc, but my first proper games were Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot.

PS2 would be Ratchet & Clank, as well as Final Fantasy X.

Xbox 360 was Rock Band and Guitar Hero. A friend had it, and I was clueless about the difference between the consoles back then since I only played MMOs and some PS2 once in a while. Hardly knew the PS3 existed.

PS3 was after I realised it had way better games(for my taste) than the 360. First game I picked up was the God of War I/II re-release and MGS4 iirc. Took a while before I begun with the better exclusives since it was so damn expensive.

Gameboy + Advanced: Pokémon!

Gamecube for all the Zelda games!

NES - Super Mario Bros / Zelda - great game, amazing cereal

SNES - Street Fighter 2 and Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past

Gameboy - Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening. looks like ALTTP but smaller, especially after hooking it to the Gameboy Color, a SNES cart that colored gameboy games to play on your TV.

N64 - Starfox 2, Mario 64, Killer Instinct Gold. This was the start of Nintendo's first-party exclusivity, so my wandering eyes saw....

Playstation - Tekken. I saw it at a booth in Best Buy and couldn't not play it.

Playstation 2 - Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, still my favorite out of the series

Playstation 3 - Heavenly Sword and God of War 3. Between those and X-Men Origins Wolverine, I really got my hack n slash on.

I plan on getting a PS4 for Mirror's Edge 2 and whatever free titles I get with the monthly sub because open-world freerunning gives me real hope.

Gameboy - Pokemon Red
PS2 - Ratchet & Clank
Nintendo DS - Metroid Prime: Hunters (now who remembers that one?)
Xbox 360 - Red Dead Redemption
Nintendo 3DS - Rayman Origins
PS Vita - Persona 4 Golden

Also, not a console, but PC and Half Life 2. I guess you could say it sold me on Steam, but it took a while for me to get really into Steam.

Well, this is tricky for me, since only two games has sold me on a console I own... and those games and consoles are:

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep for a PSP (Good thing it came in a Limited Edition bundle!!)

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance for a 3DS (Good thing... the game came in a Collector's Edition box?)

I can't say Rayman Advance sold me to own a Gameboy Advance, since I didn't buy that "console" to begin with...

I can't say that Super Smash Bros. Melee sold me to own a GameCube, despite buying a GameCube bungle that came with Smash Bros...

I can't say that any game on the PS2 sold me to buy one from a friend of my friend, since that console was offered to me to begin with...

I can't say that Flash Focus or Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days sold me for a DS Lite because not only was Flash Focus my mom's game purchase for the both of us, but 358/2 Days wasn't even on my mind at the time... (Shocking, I know...)

And I can't say that Catherine or Sonic Generations sold me to buy a PS3, even though I bought those games before getting the system itself, because I already had a LONG list of games I was going to buy on that system to begin with... (Granted, most of those turned into HD "remakes" in the long run, but I digress...)

I will say that a Smash Bros. Wii U bundle and a Kingdom Hearts III PS4 Bundle would sell me even more for those systems... and Persona 4 Golden was SO CLOSE to selling me a PS Vita...

I got a GameCube, Wii, Wii U, DS and a 3DS because I like Nintendo games, so there's no specifics to mention.

Xbox 360 was mainly for Tales of Vesperia.

PS3 Mainly for Tales of Graces F, but also for Tales of Xillia (you soon see a pattern emerging here).

For the ones I still currently own.

Master System II: It was bought as a birthday present.

Mega Drive II: Same as above.

N64: Goldeneye, I never wanted a console as badly as the N64 when I saw Goldeneye. Rogue Squadron sealed the deal.

Playstation: Colony Wars. Still have all 3, still great to this day.

Xbox: Conflict: Desert Storm.

Playstation 2: Honestly don't remember. Had so many great games though I'm not really surprised.

Playstation 3: Red Dead Redemption.

PSP 3000: Wasn't a game that sold me on this. I really liked the blue colour. Ended up mostly as a UMD collection for transatlantic flights.

PC: Dune 2. That game started a life long preference for PC gaming.

GB: Pokemon Blue.

NDS: Pokemon Platinum. Then I found pure joys of Phoenix Wright.

N64: Pokemon Stadium

PS3: Heavy Rain actually. It taught me the layouts of PS3 controller so I really appreciated it. Its a "game" that I recommend anyone who's trying to get in on console (or gaming in general)

PSvita: Persona 4 Golden.

Xbox was the first console i ever bought solely because of one game. it was not long after Halo came out, and my older brother was telling me that our cousin had it and it was like the best game he ever played. after not too long, i got to go over there with him and play our cousin's Xbox and Halo. he wasnt kidding, it was the most amazing gaming experience i had had up to that point, and i didnt even have a chance to touch the single player yet.

begged my dad to get me and an Xbox and Halo, and it ended up being one of the best things ever. still one of my favorite games, still my favorite game series. and of course, Halo 3 made getting a 360 a no-brainer.

Wii U - Promises of Pikmin, Super Smash, and Mario Kart mostly

Wii - No particular game really. Just really wanted one ever since it came out. Took me over a year to finally get one with the thing being sold out every 5 seconds where I lived. Finally had to get mine in New York while on vacation.

PS2 - A friend offered me his for 50 bucks sometime in the mid 2000's. I knew almost nothing about PS2 games, but I figured 50 bucks for a console was a good deal.

PS3 - Demon's Souls and Little Big Planet. That's all it took.

XBox 360 - The one I currently own which I bought a few years back because the one I was using beforehand technically belongs to my little brother. It was a Christmas present for the family, but mostly for my little brother. I bought my own years later so I wouldn't have to worry about losing my games I got through the online store, and didn't have to worry about losing such gems as Phantom Dust to my brother selling games to GameStop.

Nintendo DS - Once again no particular game, I just like handhelds.

Nintendo 3DS - Obvious upgrade. Also I really wanted to play Paper Mario: Sticker Star. It was a shame that it wasn't a very good game.
