Sega Mega Drive - My first console and of course the game was Sonic the Hedgehog
Playstation - Wipeout. Not really a racing game fan, but Wipeout being one the first games I saw on the Playstation blew me away at the time
Game Boy Colour - Pokemon Red/Blue. I loved Pokemon as a kid so much so that I owned both Red & Blue versions for the Game Boy.
PC - Civilization: Call To Power / Populous The Beginning. Can't remember which I owned first, though they where among the few games I owned that would run on the family computer at the time.
Playstation 2 - Metal Gear Solid 2. I already got a PS2 a few months before this came out but it was the game I was looking forward to play the most. I think I must of play through the game several times every weekend for a good few months.
New PC - Civilization IV came out
Playstation 3 - The Last Guardian. Yep, won't me making that mistake again. Though Metal Gear Solid 4 did come out which was another game I got the PS3 for.
My current PC - Civilization V came out.

In the order I got my systems:

PlayStation 2: This is kinda lame, but the reason I started really wanting my first console is because of a Flash game on Neopets that was made to advertise the release of Spyro: Shadow Legacy, which ironically you'll recognize as a DS game if you've heard of it. My young mind decided that Spyro the Dragon was the greatest thing ever and I picked a console mostly at random that I knew had at least one of his games on them (A Hero's Tail. I also bought Enter the Dragonfly but...let's not talk about that...). I really knew NOTHING about consoles when I was that age, so it's pretty lucky that I picked one of the greatest consoles to exist.

Nintendo DS: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. And also Pokémon HeartGold. Though even between me being a massive KH fan at the time and my interest in trying a Pokémon game, I probably wouldn't have invested in a DS if my sister didn't want one too and offer to pay half.

PlayStation 3: As soon as inFamous was out, I had to have one of these. That's pretty much the sole reason, though it had begun to dawn on me that if I wanted any new games potentially coming out (Kingdom Hearts III was on my mind at the time. Ha.), I'd need one of these spiffy new machines to play it on; the PS2 was slowly phasing out.

PlayStation Vita: Persona 4 Golden. What else is there? The ability to play PS1 classics on the go was appealing to me as well. It's just too bad that the original Spyro trilogy won't work on it.

Lets see...

The PS1 was the first console I ever had, and it was a gift, so no particular game sold me back then.

N64 I wanted for Donkey Kong 64 as that game looked fun as hell.

Gamecube: Star Fox Adventure

PS2: Spyro Enter the Dragonfly (Oh, how I regret buying that game)

Game Boy Advance: Pokemon Rube/Sapphire

DS: Super Mario 64 DS

XBOX: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

XBOX 360: Halo 3

PS3: Ninja Gaiden Sigma

PSP: Death JR

Wii: Super Mario Galaxy/Twilight Princess

Wii U: Wind Waker HD and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

3DS: Got as a gift, didn't want any particular games for it, but I was grateful non-the-less.

PS Vita: Persona 4 Golden

PC - GTA 3, Red Alert 2, Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Starcraft and the ability to use the internet is what sold me when i bought my first PC. So far no console had anything special enough for me to consider buying one.

Gamecube - Pokémon Colloseum

DS - Pokémon Diamond/Pearl (I'm sensing a trend here...)
3DS - Kid Icarus Uprising (C-C-COMBO BREAKER!)

For the PS I think it was Spyro. For the PS2 it was a combo of several games - Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 4, the Silent Hill games... nothing particularly sold me on the PS3. I guess it was just about time when I bought it. That was last year! But if it had to be any game it would be Arkham City and Dead Island, the games I played before actually owning a PS3.

GameBoy Advance: Pokemon. Specifically Sapphire, but there wasn't a specific one in mind
Xbox: Got it as a gift, without having asked for one after seeing someone else with it (unlike the GameBoy and DS). I guess it would retroactively be Halo 2, as that's what I ended up playing on it the most (though not until after Evolved Anniversary came out; it had been sitting gathering dust for a long while to the point I forgot we had it).
DS: Pokemon again, Diamond this time
Wii: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
GameCube: Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness
Xbox 360: Halo in general, Halo 4 in particular (had already played through the campaigns of the earlier 360 games on a friend's console, so they weren't as high on the "I must have this so I can play it" ladder)
3DS: Pokemon X/Y
(...and eventually the Xbox One if it turns out the "Halo 2 Anniversary Edition for Xbox One only" rumors are true, because Halo 2 was my favorite game in the series and I'm a sucker for the series in general)

In general, I'll probably be able to answer this question with "either Pokemon or Halo" until the day I finally grab a PS4, if that day comes (or 5, if it takes that long).

For my current consoles:

PS2 for Metal Gear Solid 3
PS3 for Metal Gear Solid 4

For both consoles I was a little late to the party and I already had a long list of other games I wanted to play on them, but those MGS titles convinced me to finally buy them.

SNES - Donkey Kong Country

Playstation - Mortal Kombat Trilogy (you could play as the boss characters in the PS version)

Playstation 2 - My Playstation broke and I wanted to play my PS1 games but if I have to credit a game for making me take the next gen Sony Plunge it would probably be Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance

Dreamcast - Resident Evil Code Veronica

GameCube - Sonic Adventure 2

Xbox - Fable

Xbox 360 - Fable 2(ugh!) Halo 3, Gears of war ?omg look at those graphics!? ? 2005 me (gaaaah >.< I was such a shallow kid!) Oblivion.

WiiU - Zombies Ate my Neighbors/Wind Waker HD. Honesty I mainly bought this thing for the virtual console.

And if I ever bought a PS3 it would have been for Infamous. But because PS4 is out now and the console isn't backwards compatible and all the games are sold digitally as well I see little point in buying one at this point.

3DSXL Limited Pikachu Edition- This is a pretty easy guess. I will always play the main series pokémon games.

Vita- P4G (never played the original) and that digital library of games I never got to play on PS1/PSP

Xbox 360- The social console, got it because that's where my friends were. System sellers were Oblivion and Halo.

Wii- Loved the GC, love nintendo games. It was unique at the time. Twilight Princess was primary system seller.

When I got older I made sure to get a gaming competent laptop, play new release multiplats and PC games on it and it's good enough. Will get a proper desktop when I'm in more long-term housing.

PS2 - Got it for Christmas. Best gift ever. I sold it to get my PS3, see below, and then bought another to play Battlefront 2 and GoW 1 and 2.

Xbox 360 - Halo 3. I was a fan of it for a long time and I simply had to have it. No regrets there. Great game, great console.

PS3 - God of War 3, a little bit of Resistance 1, although I had already played that thoroughly. Worst 300 dollars I ever spent. I already knew Resistance was fun, but God of War 3 disappointed me immensely and between hard drive fuckups and constant updates, the only thing I've used it for since buying it was to play my free copy.

I didn't even know the PlayStation existed when my dad bought it, so no game sold me on it.
Jak & Daxter sold me on the PS2.
Uncharted sold me on the PS3.
Daxter sold me on the PSP.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow sold me on the DS.
Persona 4 Golden sold me on the Vita.
Ocarina of Time sold me on the 3DS.
No game sold me on the PS4, it was just the first console launch I could afford. The promise of Naughty Dog stuff helps, though.

NES - Duck Hunt. Mario too, but mostly Duck Hunt.
Genesis - Sonic 2. Cause this was before Sonic sucked.
SNES - Link to the Past. I played it for a few minutes and had to own it.
PS1 - Final Fantasy VII. Pretty sure that's the game that sold the world on the PS1
N64 - Donkey Kong 64. I still remembered when Rareware was cool
PS2 - Ratchet and Clank. Damn fine series
Gamecube - Mario Sunshine. Because I missed Mario 64. N64 games were hard to get hold of.
Dreamcast - Soul Calibur. I regret nothing.
Wii - Twilight Princess. Wasn't as good as I'd hoped.
XBox360 - Perfect Dark Zero. Because I'm an idiot.
PS3 - Resistance Fall of Man. By the guys that made Ratchet and Clank great.
Gameboy - Final Fantasy Legends. Or should I say SaGa?
Gameboy Color - Link's Awakening. That bonus dungeon tempted me.
GBA - Golden Sun. Great games.
DS - Metroid Prime Hunters. Meh.
3DS - Pokemon. I will be the very best, like no one ever was.
PSP - Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions. Because I put enough time into the original.
Vita - WipEout 2048. Since F-Zero is AWOL i wanted to support WipEout. So much for that.

PS3 - Journey, SotC, Heavy Rain, mostly the prospect of playing all those exclusives I never could before as a PC gamer.
