I don't remember if there was a specific thing which made me want early stuff like the Game Boy, but here's what i do remember.

N64 - Goldeneye
Playstation 1 - Tekken 2
Playstation 2 - GTA 3
Dreamcast - Shenmue/Sonic Adventure
Xbox 360 - Perfect Dark Zero
PS3 - Tokyo Jungle
DS - Phoenix Wright
3DS - Project X Zone

Side note, i've had PC all along, here are the games which i remember made me upgrade or buy a new one.
Duke Nukem
Half-Life
Counter Strike (yup, had to get it running faster)
Unreal 2004
Half-Life 2/Far Cry (Didn't have to upgrade for years after due to PC gaming crisis)
Star Trek Online
Battlefield 3
The Witcher 2
Guild Wars 2

I've noticed something looking through the replies, not a lot of "I got Xbox One/PS4 for this".

SNES: Super Mario Bros. Allstars
Nintendo 64- Banjo-Kazooie. That game evokes my childhood, I love that game so much.
Gameboy advance: Castlevania: Circle of the moon
Gamecube: Luigi's mansion
Nintendo DS:Phoenix Wright: Ace attorney
Nintendo 3DS: Luigi's mansion 2 (I also can't wait for the upcoming Phoenix Wright/ Professor Layton crossover game that will be released soon
Gameboy Color: Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, Pokemon pinball and Pokemon trading card game
Playstation: Final fantasy VIII and Castlevania: Symphony of the night
Playstation 2: Silent Hill 2, Psychonauts and Kingdom hearts
Playstation 3: InFamous
Playstation Portable: Castlevania: Dracula X chronicles (mainly because it had Castlevania: Symphony of the night on it)
XBox: Jet set radio future. It still stands as one of my favourite games of all time.

I want to get a Playstation 4 eventually, but I want to see what games come out for it first, as well as waiting for the price to drop. At the moment as well, all the games that I want are being released for the PS3 (Watchdogs and South Park: The stick of truth being the primary games I want), so there isn't a real reason for me to invest in one yet, plus, I have heard that there is a Persona 5 being planned for the Playstation 3, so you bet I am going to see if that becomes a reality.

N64 (1998): Banjo-Kazooie and Yoshi's Story and I was sort of interested in Ocarina of Time. My parents ended up getting me Ocarina of Time, which although a little complex and overwhleming for me at the time, would end up dominating my life just a few short years later...

Gameboy (1999): Pokemon: Red/Blue/Yellow version(s)- I was a kid and it was 1999. I had no choice.

Gameboy Advance (2001): Golden Sun - At this point I was starting to outgrow Pokemon a bit and wanted to move onto something a bit more substantial. I was drawn in by the over the top anime style, impressive SNES-style graphics and familiar turn based mechanics.

Gamecube (2002): Super Smash Bros. Melee - Despite how much fun that I had with friends with the original Smash Bros, I really wanted this game because of my love for Zelda, weirdly enough. I just really wanted to control the fancy updated model of Link and play as Sheik ( who was one of my favorite characters at the time). It would end up being the only game I had on the system for almost a year until the pre-release of Wind Waker and it's OOT bonus disc (which I might have played even more than the N64 original).

Xbox (2004): Fable - Unlike most, I wasn't aware of the hyperbolic claims Peter Moloneux made about this game. I just was just drawn in at the promise of a fun adventure game in a pseudo-medieval world. I ended up loving it though because, at the time, I had never played a game as open or dynamic as Fable. Along with this, a lot of my friends moved from the Gamecube to Xbox so I was influenced to do the same...

PS2 (2005): Shadow of the Colossus - The aesthetics and main gameplay conceits really had me excited for this game. Little did I know it would go on to be one of the most moving and important games I would ever play.

360 (2007): Assassin's Creed - I really liked the Prince of Persia games and this looked like the next-gen evolution of a lot of the same mechanics and aesthetics established in The Sands of Time. I ended up getting a 360 for it because it was a) considerably cheaper and b) and the promise of Fable 2 down the line.

DS (2007 or 2008): The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - It was a sequel to one of my favorite Gamecube games so I was instantly interested. I didn't own one for long though as I sold it shortly after finishing it.

PS3 (2010): God of War III - I loved the first two games and the cliffhanger had me pumped to play the conclusion to the trilogy. The PS3 eventually fell to a reasonable price and I picked the two up (which I really don't regret as it has become possibly my favorite console of all time).

Wii (2011): The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - I was super excited to play a Zelda game for the first time since I was a young teenager so I picked up a Wii shortly after it was announced just to play it on day of release.

3DS (2013): The Legend of Zelda : A Link Between Worlds - Yeah, if you haven't noticed I tend to buy Nintendo consoles almost solely to play Zelda or Zelda-related stuff. I let them exploit my nostalgia pretty liberally...

PS4: Metal Gear Solid 5, Final Fantasy XV, Ass Creed IV, Killzone: Shadowfall
PSP: Final Fantasy Dissidia

Nintendo 64: Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time
Gamecube: Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Gameboy Colour: Pokemon Yellow
GBA: Pokemon Ruby
3DS: Fire Emblem: Awakening

First PC: Civilization

I can only think of a single game that sold me a console: Goldeneye. That is a lie of course because I knew I wanted an N64 well before that point - Goldeneye just cemeted that desire. I had barely even heard about the NES, the SNES was simply a better version of what I already had and the PS2 sold itself on the strength of the graphics more than anything. The Xbox I picked up because it seemed that the Xbox version of games was the better version to play in most cases, the 360 because it was available well before the PS3 and the PS3 because they developed a solid library of first party games eventually. The Xbox One and PS4 have yet to pique my interest as I do the vast majority of my gaming on PCs and I already have a box that does the whole media thing better.

Wow, that goes back a ways.

Atari 2600 - Yar's Revenge and Activision's Starmaster

Nintendo - (like to be able to say Legend of Zelda or Metroid... but actually) Punch-Out and Super Dodge Ball.

Genesis - Eternal Champions

Super Nintendo - Now it's Zelda: A Link to the Past... F-Zero too.

N64 - Zelda OOT and Goldeneye

PS - GTA, Twisted Metal 2

Dreamcast - M vs C 2 or 3 I forget which.

Gamecube - Eternal Darkness and the MGS remake.

PS2 - GTA:VC, MGS2, and Trapt

Xbox - ... can't remember why I ever bought that POS.

Wii - Fire Emblem (finally on a real console) and Metroid Prime 3

PS3 - Eventually bought one for MGS 4... but it's otherwise just there for local multiplayer brogamer dross like Borderlands and Madden and anything else that requires 2 - 4 friends and liquor to be fun.

Xbox360 - Nothing ever sold me on it. Utterly forgetable, generic, and unforgiveably broken. Never again giving Xbox money.

Latest Gen - Nothing yet, I have 0 interest in ANY of the exclusives yet.

Euh i will go for thouse i have owned, and that i brought myself, so not counting the NES and SNES that was brought to me by my parents, partelly because the NES i was just too young, just remember the first game i had was Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. And for the SNES i jsut plain don't remember what brought me to it, probably simply because it was the new Nintendo...

Game Cube: brought for Resident Evil Remake, was hoping they would remake them all but that didnt happen
X-Box 360: Mass Effect because at the time it was supposed to be a console exclusive and i'm a big fan of Bioware
Wii: well euh... my game cube was stollen was best buy a wii to be able to still play Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness... Ended up taking dust for a while trought and now have loaned it to my father for about 1 years now

but yeah... mostelly PC gamer here

Commodore 64 - Jumpman JR
NES - Super Mario Bros
SNES - Super Mario World
N64 - Mario 64
Gamecube - Wave Race
Wii - Wii Sports
PS3 - Rock Band
PC - Warcraft 2
Nintendo DS - Advanced Wars 2

Note: These aren't necessarily my favorite games on the systems. They are just among the first games I owned and enjoyed enough to feel like my purchase was worth it. In fact, only Rock Band would appear on my top 10 favorite games from this list.

N64 - Zelda Ocarina of Time - played it once over a friend's, was hooked in an hour
GameCube - Rogue Squadron: Rogue Leader - Wind Waker was also tempting
PC 1 - Rome Total War, Morrowind - played an obscene amount of both of these games
Wii - Zelda Twilight Princess (though I kind of got tired of the Zelda franchise after this)
PC 2 - Empire & Napoleon Total War, Oblivion
PC 3 - Far Cry 3, Crysis series, Rome II was on the way

PC - Microsoft Word (as you can imagine, most of my gaming happens here)
Game Boy - Pokemon Blue
Game Boy Advance - Pokemon Ruby
DS - Pokemon Diamond
3DS - Ace Attorney 5

Plus I own at least one console in each gen up to the last (as in, PS3/360) since the PS1, but no particular games really sold me on them. I just bought them once the gen was over for the massive backlog of quality stuff, and will soon get myself probably both a PS3 and a 360 for that reason.

Don't worry, I have said that many times in the past. Catharsis is good for the soul, as they say, and you make a very good point whilst doing so.

Xbox 360 - N/A - I have zero interest in owning something less reliable than my 23 year old SNES, especially when it has no worthwhile games

Xbox One - N/A - I have LESS than zero interest in owning one. The only "Xbone" game that interests me is Titanfall, and that's coming to PC...where it will be better anyways.

================OTHER================
iPad 2 - Final Fantasy Tactics:War Of The Lions, Kingdom Rush, Plague Inc, Minecraft, MegaMan 2
(I was actually randomly given the iPad for Christmas. *shrug*)
