What game series would be completely ruined with a gritty reboot?

I'm gon' go with the obvious Katamari Damacy.

Dress him in a turban or something and INSTANT GRITTY OUTRAGE.
Stop predicting and stealing my thoughts! It's creepy!

Yeah, I can't even begin to imagine what a gritty katamari would look like, but it wouldn't be fun anymore.

I`m leaning myself out of the window but i like to point out a game that isn`t even released yet.

The change of an upcomming TPS from Insomaniac. Overstrike turned to Fuse. I`m pretty sure you people remember the nice, charming trailer for Overstrike? That was the game i was waiting for not the shooter that reminds me of the GoW franchise.
The original trailer did get so much positive feedback, i still don`t get the change (i know that Insomaniac stated that it`s their own choice, but it smells fishy, like EA).

Max Payne - wasn't the entire point tracking down those responsible for his wife/baby's murder?

Mass effect - It's not a reboot but some sort of prequel/continuation. The last thing players need are more plotholes to mess up the already messed up ending. If it's a prequel they will still somehow have ammo

Ratchet and Clank.

No more cutsie art design and quirky, funny humor. Clank will be a murderous robot and Ratchet will be a grizzled lab experiment gone horribly wrong, and then turned into a super soldier by the government that created it.
they did that
it was called jack 2 and 3
and it was great
Jak was funny and awesome.

So, the opposite of that. :p
Yeah, while 2 and 3 were certainly a little darker in tone than the first I would hardly call that a gritty reboot. It was still a colourful platformer with a wisecracking side kick and a pretty good sense of humour. It was hardly Jak Ops: The Line or anything.

I actually like your idea, instead of ducking behind the shield when you pressed on the peddle, the fringe would swing forward to protect you.

Ok, my choice would be Valkyria Chronicles. Imagine if you will, the awesome watercolour graphics replaced with the dirt and brown spectrum on modern modern shooters, Welkin Gunther goes from normal (for a JRPG) guy fighting to protect his country who just so happens to have a famous military father. To a harden military man trying to break out of the shadow of his famous father while swearing repeatedly and not caring about anything but "the mission", which is to rescue his sister that has been captured by the bad guys.

If it happened to Phoenix Wright, you're probably end up with straight Noire.

crash bandicoot, although i would be genuinely interested in a gritty reboot of medieval, i don't think i could play it without missing the sarcastic humor throughout the original/remake

Everything is ruined with a gritty reboot. Any game that has its own charm, personality, or identity loses all of it when you dunk it in the grit. DMC is a perfect example of it.

However, some games could be hilarious if they were gritted up but self aware. Imagine Kirby with a Gears of War skin on it....
I actually have written a rated-T pokemon mystery dungeon script, it's not grit and blood and swearing but it's hella dark compared to other stuff.

It's not fanfiction if I haven't put it out to the public, also it's not shite in story telling.

I don't think it would sell well, great reviews but it'd end up like Psychonauts probably.....
While not techinically a game im certain there was an episode in the pokemon TV series in which Ash died. I don't remember much about the episode but the premise is certainly much darker than the other episodes.

I think the only deaths have been in the movies.

He did however come across Marik Ishtar from the Shadow Realm (Not really but I like to think that):

Ash Possessed:

Marik:

The whole franchise has taken extremely dark steps at points. Believe it or not, in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, suicide is talked about, not in the same term but the ending is dark as black construction paper in the middle of the night. It's done relatively well and unforgettable, but comes right out of nowhere.

LIMBO.
Fairly recent, I know, but we don't need any more explanation than what it described itself as. If it got a gritty reboot (in a sense) it'd probably be some mutant kid with a dislike for human life trying to survive in a cross between a wasteland and Bloody Trapland and not giving a single shit, alongside with having an overblown story. LIMBO was one of those games that was okay without too much of a story, which was essentially just a reason for the ending.

Gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Metroid prime wasn't quite a gritty reboot, but it was a certainly darker than the 2d games. And yet it still has the best atmosphere in any Metroid game.

Crash Bandicoot.

Although...now that I think of it, that wouldn't ruin the series. It'd be incredibly hilarious, since the games never had any real depth (Aside from just being fun platformers...and then racing games...and then flying combat games...and then an actual racing game that was nothing but racing, not just a few levels on a motorbike).
