Well first, what kind of games do you enjoy? Also what is your friend getting you? I'm trying to work with you here, but you're going to need more detail to get a good answer.

I vote for Bastion. It's an action RPG thing on the XBLA and was for 1200 points (it was $15, I think that's 1200 points anyway). It's on sale on Steam though, which might mean it's on sale on XBLA, I dunno.

I enjoy ... well a lot. I thought by saying I like NMH and Half-Life/portal/TF2 would be enough. I like games that are fun. If I'm not enjoying myself I'm not playing. That's why I don't like all army shooters.
I don't enjoy games that are like pokemon where you attack and wait for the opponent to attack. I also don't enjoy 3rd person shooters. I don't like brown, grey, black and white shooters. I disliked Mass effect. I don't like online multiplayer (because of other people) but friends only multiplayer is ok.

My friend is getting me a game (or a $20 Microsoft points card) that he can find at either Gamestop or Target.

I hope this helped. (I'm leaning towards a Microsoft card)

I would wait until the Friday and get Skyrim.

That's being said, I don't know how much you are into western fantasy RPG's. I wasn't until I got Oblivion though, and subsequently poured many hours of my life into it
The only right answer in this thread.

But seeing this...

I recommend Just Cause 2, blowing up shit while wind-surfing on a jet-fighter is loads of fun. Then there's also Saints Row 2 and the upcoming Saints Row: The Third, and if you're not familiar with the series its pretty much GTA but more awesome and fun.

Like the person said before me, the Grand Theft Auto, Just Cause and Saints Row series are really fun games. They are third person shooters in a sense, but that shouldn't be a problem. If it were me though, since you don't like online multiplayer games I would recommend to wait a few days before Skyrim comes out and get that. If you don't find anything just get the Microsoft points, download a bunch of trials and see which ones you like the best. My personal favorites are Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (a classic) and Hard Corps: Uprising (challenging and frustrating at first, but really fun when you get used to it).

He ended up giving me $30 because there were lines at gamestop since Nov 6th and he thought it would be wasting $5 if he got it at CVS (they up the price by $5). Guess what's that going to? Skyrim.
