Final Fantasy VII/IX/X
These three had the struggles that helped you relate to characters and really get involved into the story with them
oh jeez, *covers user with flame shield* i dont know if i would go muttering those games around these parts..especially 7, some ff6 cultists are gonna come in here and tear you a new one for even thinking that.
ot: TELLS the best story? hmm... that might be a hard one to pick from, there are alot of games with good stories that aren't really told across so well, but there are some with not that well stories that are really driven hard and good.
for average story but great way it is told = kotor
for stellar story but wasn't really fleshed out or used to drive the plot = (please dont flame) but oblivion.
honestly i think oblivion is cliche yes, but if the characters had been fleshed out, the main plot had been fixed up to be a bit more important and maybe the landscape changed a bit to make it unique, but leave the combat/items/technique of the game, and it would a fantastic game to play (oblivion wasn't bad, just saying it could've been much much better).
