Damn so many awesome games coming out! Zelda Breath of The Wild, Mass Effect Andromeda, Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost Recon Wildlands, For Honor, Persona 5, Assassin's Creed Empire, etc. 2017 is looking like a flagship year for video games. This year will be a fight to the death for GOTY! Which game do you think will win?

And do you think video games can ever be on the same level as novels, movies, and TV shows? Do these games show us we are getting to that point?

Zelda's going to be a strong contender as long as interest doesn't drop immediately. Horizon: Zero Dawn is looking like a very strong entry.

Assassin's Creed and Persona 5 are going to have to fight past their respective tired franchise and general weebness respectively.

What's probably going to clinch it is an out-of-nowhere indie title that's going to spark waves on controversy over why it's not actually a real game for gamers.

Game of the Year in my eye is Red Dead Redemption, though I have no seen nor played it yet so who is to say how that will pan out, this is just my favoritism of the previous game carrying over. As for Mass Effect, I'm sure it will do well, I just hope the content is as deep as it is wide.

Its only March so out of the games I've played this year, Nioh is probably first behind Sniper Elite 4, not for any creative excellence but just for being fun and/ interesting. I'm a huge Halo wars fan, the new installment was fine. Dynasty warriors is Dynasty warriors, Resi 7 failed to impress me really but it was grand.

I've heard good stuff about the new Zelda game but I'll be damned if I'll buy NS to play it, and I've not touched For Honor yet and don't really plan too. The only game I bought this year that has really excited me is Rainbowsix Siege for somehow refreshing my interest in the FPS genre again after I got burnt out after Modern Warfare 2 (Even though Uplay servers and the bugs are awful)

I don't believe these games will uplift gaming to a position comparable to other mediums, Film and Art are far too pretentious to allow gaming into their hallowed halls but fuck them, I think the games that have come previously have already done that regardless. Though if this this year was to be what will be compared to the years before, I think it would be a solid entry of decent content all year long, perhaps the best for content quality not withstanding awful DLC practices.

I had no idea they were making another AC title, They need to let that thing breathe for a bit.
Star Citizen will also be released this year apparently, I wont hold my breath.

For me 2007-8 will always be best year.

No idea.

I'm probably never getting another Nintendo, so I can't play new Zeldas.

I never liked Mass Effect.

Rockstar's open world games are never that good. I'm expecting RDR2 to be pretty formulaic.

Horizon doesn't look that good.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is a Ubisoft game. They don't know what makes games fun anymore.

For Honor looks crummy and simplistic.

Persona 5 looks too overtly JRPG. I don't like the character designs. Modern anime sucks.

Assassin's Creed was never good.

From the upcoming releases, I'm tempted by Nier Automata, Little Nightmares and Vampyr.
I agree with eerything you say my friend. these games are absolutely generic and boring.

Now Im Excited for PREY which is coming in few months and that is going to be my GOTY. and as a huge fan of system shock. this is must for me.

So far it's probably Resident Evil 7 and Nioh(really couldn't pick between the two). Horizon would be a good third. Few open-world games have such good gameplay(or even graphics). Sniper Elite 4 was awesome as well even if it's not really in the same league. The previous Sniper Elite games were guilty pleasures of mine but this is the first one I would consider a genuinely good game. Then there is Yakuza 0 which I also really enjoyed for it's quirky demeanor mixed with crime drama and fun minigames and breadth of content mixed with solid 3D brawling action.

In any way though the year is off to a particularly strong start and it's only march. One game I wish to be good is Vampyr. Absolutely love the setting and aesthetic but the combat they showed in their video definitely needed some work still. I would hate for such an awesome game to have Assassins Creed level of clumsiness in the combat. Also looking forward to Prey. I don't really doubt this game is going to be good since it's by the same developers as Dishonered 2 which I thought was absolutely phenomenal(first game was good as well). Kind of on the fence about Nier Automata since I'm not the biggest Platinum fan. Same goes for Mass Effect.

I don't hold movies and TV shows in that high regard to be honest. Yeah there is some good stuff but there is also way more crap. Same as with games. :p

Gonna echo some people and say that it's way too fucking early at the moment. 2015 I called with Witcher early on simply for how fucking good it was and how much of a great send-off it was for the characters, but this year isn't as easy.

I mean, Zelda is interesting, but I'm only like 6 hours in and I'm torn between it being Zelda(therefore even at its worst, the series is better than alot of the market) and Open-World(something I've never been wholly happy with due to some of the frustrating mechanics that often come with the...theme(?)).

Andromeda isn't even out, but the little I've seen of it has made me very much uninterested, which when compounded with my absolute disappointment in ME3(to the point that I just cannot force my way through the series anymore to see the expanded patch or DLC I didn't buy that supposedly makes it better) makes it a game I doubt I'll buy until I see a good deal for it. Also it's Bioware, a company that has pretty much none of the minds behind it that made it such a renowned name in the first place there anymore. Also not released

Red Dead 2, no interest, had no interest in the first one either. Also not realeased

Horizon, a game that's better to watch than it is to play, mainly because of the Open World aspect. The story later on gets sorta interesting and has a mild bit of horror in it, but it's still garbage for the most part as far as I'm concerned. Amazingly pretty and neatly designed, but garbage all the same from story to characters to designs being just animals with mechanical parts slapped on to especially Ashly fucking Burch having the flatest and most bored voice I've seen her have yet. Rost's the big daddy mentor badass you always wanna see around though.

Wildlands, Ubisoft game with a GR skin slapped on it from what I've seen. Nothing worth staying around for. Also I don't think released yet.

For Honor, maybe, game's got alot of depth to it, and could honestly become a FGC mainstay if they keep with it. Duels and Brawls are where the game really shines. Contender, honestly not, but it might win some kind of multiplayer award.

Persona, it's Persona. About the only way they can make it bad is if they decide to Fire Emblem waifu sim it up and give it to Treehouse for localization. Also, yet again, not released.

Haven't gotten to Nier yet, been replaying through Drakengard and Nier to refresh my memory of all the batshit insane depressing nihilism Taro puts you through first. But if it builds off of the previous games, then it's honestly going to be a good year in my book. Probably won't win any awards because it's Yoko Taro, but I think the last time a Japanese game won any significant GOTY, the majority of this forum was still being told to go play outside by their mothers.

Then again, No Man's Con won GOTY. So who the fuck knows.

If it's not going to be Breath of the Wild or Horizon, then it'll be an even better game that's coming down the line. Whatever the case may be, this is turning into a pretty fucking sweet year in gaming.

How do you figure that? I could sorta, kinda see the logic in this if the game was heavily story-driven, but 90% of what you do in the game is fighting robots while traversing the landscape. How is that better to watch than to play?

Who knows? We're barely two months in.

But, since you insist: RDR2, Horizon ZD and Zelda: Breath of the Wild are the only three you mentioned I can see winning a GOTY. Persona is too niche, Assassin's Creed stagnated at a record-breaking pace (and I seriously doubt Empire is going to change that) while Ghost Recon: Wildlands will probably just turn into another Division or Destiny. As for ME:A...I dunno. Dragon Age: Inquistion wasn't that long ago and Bioware might as well be called EA RPGs, if you catch my drift.

Prey might win some awards (though GOTY is stretching it, B-Cell), Super Mario Odyssey and Yooka-Laylee will get heapings of praise for basically being Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, Resi VII might win something, Torment: Tides of Numeria I'm told is good (though I haven't played it) and some indie game will get name-dropped a bunch. Whether it deserves to be mentioned (Undertale) or not (Inside).

Oh come on Sheridan, this is usually B-cell's thing. Shouldn't you be fighting the Shadows or something?

But, look, no idea, and it doesn't matter.

I mean off the OP list, it'd have to be For Honor or Horizon because the rest are just regurgitating some severely well picked bones. For Honor's a weird mash of a fighting game and Battlefield, neither of which typically get much award nods. Horizon dabbles between being Shadow of Mordor MechaDinosaur Edition and Witcher 3, which is another mish-mash, but one a bit closer to the stuff that usually gets these nods (And having a story thats not a bullet point probably also helps).

Zelda's a decent shot, but its oddly enough probably too much of a niche title. There's apparently been technical issues with it (or with the Switch, either or) too. The flagging Nintendo brand loyalty might not be enough to carry it on this outing.

Mass Effect maybe? Were people invested enough in the setting for the series to continue while (presumably) ditching the characters and storylines of the original trilogy entirely? Bioware hasn't had the greatest recent outings either.

Red Dead would be the other obvious one, if it actually comes out. Never touched the series myself, since GTA is just bland tedium and incredibly bad mechanics with borrowed cliches for stories. An unfair judgement perhaps to take on Rockstar's other IP, but I'd be surprised if it held my attention at all.

What I think will win GOTY...

1) Zelda
2) RDR2 (but I'm betting a delay will happen)
3) Horizon

What will be GOTY for ME...

1) Horizon
2) Prey

Some games have reached that level IMO. The thing keeping 99.9% of games back is writing. Games just have shit writing because 1) the industry has barely any writing talent and 2) games are developed backwards where levels and game mechanics are designed first while the writer has to tie it all together.

Probably Zelda or HZD. Best Platformer will go to Mario but I bet Yooka Laylee will beat it in a few outlets. Persona 5 will be best JRPG. Nier or Nioh will win best action game.

i don't see any other game at present or coming out this year that has a chance of getting a 98/100 average score on metacritic so Zelda: Breath of the Wild will easily win GOTY this year.

It's March. Kinda early too tell, don't you think?

I know I won't have time to play even close to all of the games you mentioned, and some of those I'd consider I'll wait on until the inevitable self-proclaimed GOTY Editions that include all the DLC. Games-wise it looks to be an interesting year, especially seeing how Nioh charmed the pants off gamers out of nowhere, but in terms of industry bullshit I honestly expect more of the same at this point, so it's difficult to get hyped for anything.

What I can say is that I've been main-lining Horizon Zero Dawn for four days now, and it won't let me go. Speaking as someone who's mostly tired of Open World games, I find this game immensely captivating despite its niggles (and there are niggles), so I guess it's my first contender for the title as things stand now.

There ought to be a rule against using the term GOTY before, say, October.
