Well Nintendo has released a new installment in a beloved franchise and its not absolute shit this time, so Zelda has a good chance of taking it.

I dont think Mass Effect is in the running. The EA Ministry of Truth has been curiously silent about the game while Bioware went and promptly committed PR seppuku with the softcore porn comment.

Shadow of War... well we havent even seen actual gameplay from it yet.

Horizon will certainly get GotY from outlets that cover playstation exclusively, and perhaps deservingly from others as well based on my experience with it.

I wouldnt consider For Honor to be a contender for GotY. The game has catestrophic issues with its 'main' MP game mode thanks to being able to pay to bypass progression and offers basically fuck all outside of 1v1, 2v2 matches.

Ghost Recon and Assassins Creed should be regarded like a heretic in the eye of the God Emperors Holy Inquisition, meaning theyre shit until proven not shit.

Its never too early to declare the results. Just ask CNN.

Unless Bethesda sneaks up on us with something that isn't a HD release, it's going to be Red Dead Redemption 2, 'cuz people love open world.

If Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't get delayed to 2018 then I'm fairly certain it will win most GOTY awards.
If by some miracle Cyberpunk 2077 is released this year then it will beat RDR2.

Look B-Cell, its a bit early in the year and half those games haven't come out....wait, you're not B-cell....
Damn! You beat me to it!

OT: It's start of the year and we already have strong contenders. But getting at the same level as books and movies? Unlikely this year.

For me, it was decided when Project Aces said we'd be going back to Osea.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is going to be MY 2017 Game of the Year, because we're going back home to Strangereal. Nothing else matters. It's time for us Aces to come home.

Horizon, a game that's better to watch than it is to play, mainly because of the Open World aspect.
How do you figure that? I could sorta, kinda see the logic in this if the game was heavily story-driven, but 90% of what you do in the game is fighting robots while traversing the landscape. How is that better to watch than to play?
Because the first couple hours I've seen look interesting while you're learning about the bots, but then as I watched Strippin play through it, it just looked like such a boring gameplay loop.(Freeze 'em, Triple Shot six times, repeat)

As you get further into it, you sorta fight more humans which are boring as all hell to begin with, which when coupled with it being a controller and the very strict hitboxes said humans have, makes it a frustrating experience to watch, and I can imagine how much of a pain in the ass it is to play like that. Also stealth is handled very poorly for a game where you can die in two hits on any difficulty above Normal.

Add in that it feels like so much of it looks the same and the game just feels like an empty world in the worst way(difference between tribal man and nature taking back over I think they were going for and what it ends up being). Like I don't think you ever run into a hunting party or outpost that is in any way handling themselves outside of specific cities. The bots are sorta neat to watch though.

Then I just wish that Aloy was a bit more weather-beaten. She was out in the elements alot more than most people even in the rest of the game, and she and Rost are both pretty fair-skinned and have next to no sun bleached hair. I mean, I've got really fucking dark red hair, and even my hair goes closer to a neon if I work outside for a month. Much less nearly 20 years out there.

Story-wise it's interesting, but if you've played a Fallout game and watched about five minutes of Captain Planet, you have about 90% of what's going on and what's going to happen. It's sorta generic is all. I will say that Sylens and his VA is my favorite bit of it all, also the guy's of my favorite actors I don't know the name of, just always happy to see the guy working.

Yeah no, sorry, but then you ain't seen nothing. Also you don't get the triple shot skill until way, way later in the game. And freezing, just like every other elemental status in the game, is only effective against frost weak enemies, and even then it only stuns them for a few seconds. And unless you're taking on the biggest of the biggest you're never fighting these things one on one. Most machine fights is you versus three or four, even when those four are the size of busses and coming at you like a freight train.

As you get further into it, you sorta fight more humans which are boring as all hell to begin with, which when coupled with it being a controller and the very strict hitboxes said humans have, makes it a frustrating experience to watch, and I can imagine how much of a pain in the ass it is to play like that. At best 10% of the fights in this game are against humans. And of that 10% half you can skip by ignoring bandit camps.

Add in that it feels like so much of it looks the same and the game just feels like an empty world in the worst way(difference between tribal man and nature taking back over I think they were going for and what it ends up being). You go from forrests to desert canyons to deep, dense jungles. This gameworld has more variety in its environment than most open-world games.

As for those hunting parties... There have been plenty of times where I was fighting something huge only to have a couple of patrol men wander by and join the fight. The first time I came across a Stormbird it was in the middle of fighting a bunch of dudes. And sometimes when fighting corrupted machines you'll have other non-corrupted machines join that fight.

And I'm afraid you just missed the exact point I specifically talked about. Has nothing to do with the scenery changing, a largely empty forest and a largely empty desert comes out to about the same difference. Scenary chaning doesn't mean anything if the gameworld feels empty. People threw holy shit fits about DS2's level design in it having a "here's the Lava Castle level because it's a videogame" thing going on about it.

And again, I just listened to about 15 of the 50 hours Strippin put in. I'm not going to claim the game is a failure, just that it's got frustrating elements in it that for someone like me makes it a "not worth buying" game. Especially if it's going to be a PS4 exclusive.

Yes, I know that triple shot is later on, just as I know about the freeze stuff, it's simply that it's not an interesting open world game to me. Much like most others. Stealth is required to survive, but the system is not the least bit explored(you have tall grass you run into, and rocks and whistles to grab the moron's attention so you can kill them and wait for the inevitable "must've been the wind" until they find a body and everyone very quickly knows where you are if you aren't in said tall grass) and the combat can be summed up with you shooting shit with a bow, spamming the craft arrow button in the middle of the fight because you can't aim worth a shit because it's a controller and they actually made hitboxes that fit the graphics for once, and you flail around with your sword pretending to be a spear with a few stealth stabs every once in a while.

Nobody knows, we're still in the beginning of the year and there's a lot coming out, Nioh, Zelda and Horizon already made strong contenders, but mostly because not much else has been released.

I've heard Supergiant (Bastion/Transistor) is releasing a new game this year, indie studios usually guarantee at least an honorable mention at the end of the year.

There are expansions for Uncharted 4 and Dark Souls 3 and people decide those can be GOTY for some reason.

Also, a lot of familiar faces return these year: Mario, God of War, Red Dead, Assassin's Creed, Green Banjo-Kazooie, Waifu Castlevania, Mass Effect, we also have those to keep track of.

Horizon Zero Dawn is my cynical take. Mostly because of political reasons, though. I mean, it looks pretty, has a story that doesn't offend anyone and the gameplay looks pretty generic, so yeah. GOTY.

My favorite so far is Nioh, but if games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne can't win GotY (at least not the GotY by D.I.C.E. or The Game Awards), Nioh's not winning either. It's got to be something big and well-known, probably RDR2 (which I'm very much looking forward to), Mass Effect or maybe Zelda.

Red Dead would be the other obvious one, if it actually comes out. Never touched the series myself, since GTA is just bland tedium and incredibly bad mechanics with borrowed cliches for stories. An unfair judgement perhaps to take on Rockstar's other IP, but I'd be surprised if it held my attention at all.
Coming from someone who's never cared much about GTA, RDR is one of my favorite games ever made. I'm not even 100% sure what it is that makes me like the game so much more, but definitely don't let your GTA dislike stop you from trying out RDR.

I am sure there will be quite a few winners of game of the year award as for my own personal game of the year award I will decide at the end of the year and I am sure it will be every bit as meaningful as every other game of the year award i.e not very.

Zelda would be a strong contender but I think it launched too early in the year: most game of the year winners launch in fall after all but maybe Breath of the wild will be 2017'sending GOTY. Honestly though I'm not sure what else is out this year since Nintendo has so much of my focus right now. Personally I see myself liking Zelda more than Mario Odyssey since that's how I generally lean normally.

Of course Pokemon Stars or whatever could happen in November and completely sweep award season!

"Breath of the Wild" and "Red Dead Redemption 2" will battle it out for most the honours this year.

For me personally, I have no clue, though there are a few titles I have my eye on before the year ends.

I'm probably never getting another Nintendo, so I can't play new Zeldas.
There's a WiiU emulator in the works that can already run BotW... (just don't pirate the game m'kay)

Tiny Tina is voicing the main character? Must have been a tough one to cast. Honestly, I can't help but almost crack up just thinking about this. They gave Tiny Tina a serious role in a triple-A video game... Oh wait, apparently she got "recognition" from Life Is Strange. Fine then, I guess.

That's crazy, they're still hiring people for it. I wouldn't rule out even 2020 release, the game is insanely ambitious.

I, uh, I already forgot Res7 came out this year as opposed to late last year.

Why's everyone pushing Persona 5 so hard? That came out 2016 :^>

Joking aside, a ton of what just came out are already as solid as can be, so who really cares when all the games so far are great. All thats left is the aforementioned games that come out late but are super spread out (i.e. Mass Effect,RedDead2)

Though while it's still to early to tell... Its Nier. Nier Automata is GOTY.
