What games are over/under rated?

Well as you can see from the Avatar I enjoyed Gears of War and it I find that it makes a good Co-oP game.
OT:
I do belive that Portal is a tad overated. It is a great game no doubt about that, but the following that it get's is almost cult like.
I can't really think of a game that I enjoyed that would be considered underrated and proably the closest to this would be the Ghostbusters. A lot of people at my school claimed this game would suck simply because it's based on a movie. I did rent it though and I found it enjoyable and fun to play.

I'd say Grand Theft Auto IV is overrated - it's a great game and I love it, but I don't think it deserves to be one of the highest rated games of all time (on Metacritic, anyway). I just felt it lacked the "fun" of the previous GTA games.
As for underrated games, I have to admit that I've never played a video game which I felt was treated particularly unfairly by critics. There are games that I've played which I thought were perfect which received slight less than perfect reviews, but other than that, I find I tend to agree with critics. One critic that I will say I have disagreed with in the past is Yahtzee - but that's just due to the fact that he's overly critical and has considerably higher standards than myself.

The FPS Genre.. Is just aiming and shooting... thats all it is, and all it ever will be. So when people say 'brings nothing new to the genre' i think 'How can you change the genre when the core elements will never change?'
Gears didn't have that much swearing to be honest, it was quite tame. Well compared to the gore content.
Section 8 was quite fun admittingly, yet my nearby blockbuster hasn't got it yet, so i cannot try the full game yet.
Fracture was terrible, How does bullets make the earth suddenly deflate like a balloon?
Lastly, Half Life was well known... It's funny how one person just discovers a gem, they believe that no one has known about it...

Overrated I'd go with GTA IV definitely. Underrated? I'm gonna say Ace Combat 04, well maybe not but I just love that game so I'll bring attention to it through the 1 person who reads this post.
Underrated: Halo 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2
Overrated: GTA 3/Vice City/4, Half-Life 2
I believe Halo 2 is the best multiplayer FPS of all time. No one can change my opinion of that, at least not until I've had sufficient time spent with Modern Warfare 2.
Marvel vs Capcom 2 does not get enough credit for how freaking amazing it is. If you haven't already, buy this immediately from XBLA or PSN.
I've always felt the GTA series was 'meh' at best. It's fun to do wheelies while listening to hair metal and running over hookers on a harley, but honestly the missions all felt boring and not very fun.
I haven't played much of Half-Life 2, but what I played didn't even come close to living up to the praise that everyone and their mom throws at this game. It screams average to me.

Erm...Half-Life was rated the greatest PC game of all time multiple times, and was out a long time before Halo. You hadn't heard of it because it was old.Retro Menace said:

FFVII is a good RPG. It is not however the greatest RPG ever, it is not the best plotted RPG, it is not the best RPG to play, and it's not even the best Final Fantasy (I'd pin that title on IX myself). It's not the worst thing ever, but it's certainly nowhere near as good as it's fanboys and fangirls make out.
