What games did you play in your head as a child?

...Assuming you're not currently a child, that is.

For example, when I was much younger and being driven around by my mum, I'd play a game where the car could only drive on shadowy patches of road, and had to 'jump' over patches of light longer than the car was. To make the car jump, I had to hold my breath or tense my muscles. Luckily for me I grew up in a part of Australia where shade-casting trees are plentiful and so didn't die from asphyxiation.

Weird, I know, but I'm not the only one. What little games did you play as a kid, like that? Did you ever try to bring others into your game?

You know those black strips along the bottom of walls in school buildings? And how they have periodic "breaks"? I try to avoid putting a foot in front of those. I do this "don't trip the laser" game with other things, sometimes trying to avoid tiles the laser is in.

When i was walking home through a patch of a forest, i always picked up a stick and committed plant genocide.
My thirst for dead grass families was insatiable.

If I was in a car, you know those cables and electrical wires that go up and down? well I would swish my hand on the wires like i'm jumping on them.

Whenever I sat in one of the side seats in the car, I'd look at the yellow lines in the street and move my eyes over them, as if I were jumping over. I didn't do that for long because there are so many lines, but I did it for a few.

My story might be a little different. <.< But I used to pretend I was a Super Saiyan in school and when I was home. Used to kamehameha my locker when it wouldn't open. xD

I went through multiple phases and it would take a long time to write them all down, but here's a few.

I pretended to do science. I had a little "science table", and I pushed the wheelbarrow around and collected specimens and looked at them through a magnifying glass and chopped things up to make strange concoctions for cosmetic purposes, or fake potions.

At another stage I genuinely aspired to be a film director. Not when I was older, I wanted to make movies right then and there and was preparing a script for some lame movie about my friend and I being stranded in the jungle.

An actual imaginary game I played involved only stepping on one coloured squares at the supermarket and collecting "loves" (inspired by the hearts collected on Croc) by touching gold those circle things on the ground, and lives by touching silver lining.

Same, except it was bushes I hit, and those bushes happened to be outside a neat housing complex. Some lady poked her head out the window of a car and sneeringly said "you think you're so tough!" I wasn't even aware I was being a brat, because I got the impression plants in public spaces belonged to everyone and were there for the plunder.

At our local shopping centre the tiles are all either coloured or just white, I would always try to only stand on the coloured ones and hop around because the white oners were...lava?

I pretended I was a samurai with super leet sword skills! Was a lot more entertaining when I actually had a stick as my sword wannabe.

Good times...

I had a similar one, actually, also for long car rides, also in Australia. I used to picture there was a long pole extending out the window of the car, and I had to pull it back to avoid it hitting the power poles or whatever else it would intercept.

I think I just controlled it with eye movements or something...not sure. I was big on the imagination-heavy stuff.

As a child I played a pretty similar mental game on car rides. I'd imagine a character, usually Sonic due to his speed, was racing the car, but could not touch the road (because it was lave or something). So my imaginary racer just had to jump from grass to grass. There was never really a point it was just something top keep my mind occupied, I guess.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who did this.

Here's a summary of mine:
-avoiding stepping on cracks in the street (mainly due to the superstition)
-only stepping on certain colours of tiles on the floor
-pretending there was a ninja running along the fence or wall next to the road when riding in a car and he'd have to jump over gaps
-pretending I was in a race whenever I passed someone on the highway

Oh yeah I did that as well. I also did the whole "Don't step on the cracks or you'll break your mothers back" thing. I always avoided cracks when on sidewalks.

I'd pretend that the legs of my bed had become 8 miles long while I was sleeping, and I'd have to protect my stuffed animals from falling off.

And if I was on my bike I'd also pretend that cars were monsters trying to catch up to me and eat me, and I'd have to make the next turn off before they could reach me.

Used to imagine a mario-esque character running alongside my parents car, he had to jump over light poles, jump onto fences and over fence breaks, etc. To make him jump I had to move my leg (the one closer to the outside of the car) towards the middle of the car, to make him land I moved my leg back out.

Fake potions! My brother and I used to do that all the time too. Only our mum sometimes let us into the cupboards (silly her) so invariably we'd use up all the food colouring, flour, sugar etc, along with the leaves and dirt and bugs.

In other news, it's surprising me how many people seemed to play 'jumping' games in cars... I wonder what the reason behind it is?
