Don't we take a chance with every game we play?
Not really games are more often than not shoe ins for personal preference (For me Bioshock 2, Reckoning, ME3) are not leaps of faith, I KNOW these games will be good. I'm talking about games that go against your personal tastes or better judgement

waaaayyy too many games to count but I give a few of my favorites out the bunch...
Nexus: The Jupiter incident
Hegemonia - Legions of Iron
Sword of the Stars
Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance/Black Knight/Mechcommander 2 (it was combo deal)
Homeworld 1 (hate myself for losing the cd key through)

Yes this another one of those "What games insert obligatory personal response based on certain conditions thread".

For me it was Red Dead Redemption. As someone who wasn't all that fond of the concept of GTA and never actually played any Rockstar games before AND hating westerns and western themed things even though I live in Texas, I found the game to end up one of my favorites. enthralling characters and story took the forefront in this tale of vengeance.

What other games took you by surprise?
Red Dead for me too dude. I went from "what is Red Dead Redemption?" (didn't know a thing about it a day or two before I bought it) to my favorite game of all time. I also took a chance on Catherine and liked that WAY more than I thought I would.

Katawa Shoujo-didn't think I'd like a free game that much

Team Fortress 2- don't like fps much but it was fun.

Portal 1-2- don't like 2 many puzzle game but these games are just about perfect

Dj heor 2- The complexity of it is just interesting and the music is really good, surprised me.

Most of these I picked up in the last few months of 2011:

Chrono Trigger
Vanquish
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
Deus Ex: The Conspiracy (A good port of the original if you could get rid of all the load times. Still great, none the less)
Dark Cloud 2
Hitman: Blood Money
Bully
A Space Shooter For 2 Bucks!
Persona 3: FES

Today:
Gotham City Imposters -BETA- (TRY. THIS. GAME. It plays like a hybrid of Team Fortress 2 and CoD.)
Katawa Shoujo (It's free. Just go download it right now even if you don't enjoy visual novel dating-sims.)

Bastion

Saw a trailer, completely dismissed it.

Then saw a bunch of positive reviews and a good showing on Zero Punctuation.

Bought it.

Fucking loved it.

A friend recommended the Golden Sun series to me last year. I had initially dismissed it as another bland JRPG, but by the time I finished the first one I really enjoyed it. Golden Sun: the Lost Age cemented my love of the series and while Dark Dawn had several flaws, it was still and enjoyable game.

Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed II, Civilization III, Red Faction: Guerilla, Europa Universalis, Baldur's Gate, and Call of Duty 4.

All of those games I ended up liking... quite alot.

Borderlands. Was totally FPS burnt out and did not even want to know it existed. Tried it once, am still playing it not.
Splatterhouse. Not great but not bad either. And its the only game where I actually wanted to hunt down the hidden collectables. Since yeah, it turns into nudie pics of the dudes girlfriend...
Shadows of the Damned. Not much of one for shooters on a console but it was really really enjoyable.

Darksiders. I got it for free on Steam buying some other game, I expected it to be rubbish but it was pretty good.

Also Dungeon Siege III. For an RPG lite that was a pretty decent game even though some reviewers hammered it badly.

And of course Terraria, probably the game I spent the most time on in 2011.

I bought Tenchu: Return from Darkness for the original xbox in spite of multiple suggestions not to. It ended up being one of my favorite games. Mirror's Edge was the same deal.

Oblivion & Skyrim - both impulse buys cuz I had extra cash.

Divinity 2: The dragon Knight saga - little rough around the edges but a very fun game with quite a few interesting characters.

ShadowHearts - never heard of it at all before I bought it purely on the box art.

Duke Nukem Forever - Everyone was afraid it would be awful I bought it anyway just to see and I genuinely liked it.

I take a lot of chances on freeware stuff too.

Charles Barkley: Shut up and Jam: Gaiden - A jrpg starring CHARLES BARKLEY. How the heck did this turn out so awesome?

Last Scenario & Exit Fate - two of the best jrpgs I've ever played and they were completely free. And made by the same guy.
