Hey There...perhaps I should give some background for this question...

I recently spent pretty much all of the extra money Christmas throws my way to buy myself all the equipment I needed to start doing Video Game Let's plays! (And i've been doing them every day now...uploading one video a day) I plan on taking some editing classes at my college and perhaps doing reviews of games as well!

So...as I do my let's play of Star Wars Jedi Academy, and begin recording the first few episodes of a Psychonaughts let's play...I realize I don't really have any other games planned to do let's plays of after those two games.

So I thought I'd ask for some help here! Oh! And here is my channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5nIZqZejl9ptujsi8u2dGg You can watch some of my episodes if you want too get a feel for my humor...tho I admit as i've only done a FOUR videos so far, so I still have quite a lot of getting used to doing Let's plays...

GUIDELINES!

1. My computer is decent...but NOT super powerful so it's not gonna handle high-end games
2. I'm leaning more towards older games as they don't have HUGE numbers of people do let's plays of them and might still have a decent following
3. I am NOT above using emulators! (so Ps1 and n64 games are a go)

Thank you for any help!

Slow down son, this is a slow board!

Since this is directly game related perhaps Gaming Discussion would be a better place to ask for opinions?

Anyway, personally I like watching Let's Plays that are either
a) Narrative-based games played well and with the minimum of deviation from the plot
b) Any game, played skillfully ("wow, I never knew that secret area existed! You can buffer that attack into a juggle? Damn, I've never seen anybody beat that boss so easily! etc)
c) Any game, played at any skill level, as long as the narration is interesting and/or funny

Personally I think LPs of Burnout 3: Takedown would be great if you could get your hands on an original Xbox or 360 (using BC). My reasoning is simple. Most LPs of Burnout 3 were just recordings of perfect laps. Nobody wanted to be honest about the tons of work it took to get there. There were some tracks (called Burning Laps) that took around 30-40 tries to get gold. You could easily run a five minute lap just to crash at the end and lose 1st place. I think it would be great to see a quick montage of each failed attempt (crash part only), quickly mashed together and labeled with a crash counter, finishing with the final lap in which you run it perfect.

A good example of this would be OnlyAfro on YouTube. He's really good at Dark Souls, but he revels in showing his failures, usually at the end. The critical difference is that he's really quite good at playing and doesn't feel the need to hide his mistakes. He's better than that, he knows it, but he's not so proud he's going to hide it.

I like this idea actually. I'm going to refer to them as 'honest' LPs.

I think there are some games you could probably get through with moderate difficulty. Say, the first Ghost Recon on the highest setting, or the opening stages of Halo 2 on Elite. You know what I'm talking about. Oh, and any of the Operation Flashpoint games for PC. There are...I believe there's the original game and two expansions. I think I played them on normal and they are hard as balls. Plus, once you get to the part in OpFlash where you have to control a squad, all hell breaks loose. The squad controls are terrible. Every command you give your team is like programming a robot, only you don't know what the commands actually do. It's frustrating, but I'd watch somebody trying to get through that crap.

While there's been a huge shift with LP videos in which people like to splice their reactions into the camera, I think it's sometimes funnier to just hear the frustration in a player's voice. Not matching a face to a name is...it's just funnier I think. You get to fill in the blanks with your twisted brain. Take this video for example, Destiny vs. The No. I think seeing the LP's face didn't really add anything.
No no no no no...

I also love videos that contain genuine, natural reactions to things. You can really tell when someone is disappointed by their voice. This is primarily why I don't watch LPs of people playing "scary" games. I don't buy it when people react to games like Slender when they play alone. From my experience, people are for some reason more scared when there's a second person around. They don't scream like that when they're alone.

I normally don't watch LPs other than to find secrets, and perhaps the idea of playing really hard games has been done. Actually, yes, iJustine played Unfair Mario in the past. Then again, to be honest, I probably didn't watch iJustine's videos simply for the Let's Play aspect. But I think there's room for videos where perfection isn't guaranteed. And while there's the possibility of them turning cheesy and insincere, I think including quick bits of failure would make it worthwhile for the viewer.[hr]

In summary:

Insincere, hyperbolic reactions have been done--to death.

There are probably only two types of people who want to see a perfect LP playthrough: people looking for help or people looking to troll you. A combination of both is less than ideal I think.

Any game can be good. It's your performance that makes or breaks it.
Don't try too hard to be funny and don't be editing out every death or mistake.
And for the love of god do not put you mug in the frame unless there is a really good reason for it.

Horror games make good Let's Plays, especially if you're playing them blind. It's easy to immerse yourself into them, they're usually not very long and I think when you're playing with an audience in mind that boosts your bravery. I've seen some very fun LPs of Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 and Silent Hill.

OH! and I don't really want to do multiplayer games...other people can make things kinda...unreliable.
You could have just edited your original post.

this post was nothing more than a long winded bump and is likely to get reported.
OT
Have you seen this LP?
I think it's very good because of the experience of the main commentator, he knows the game inside and out, this cuts out annoying fat and replaces it with information about the game. It's interesting and informative and humorous, he knows what to say and when.
So my advice would be to pick a game that you know very well and are passionate about.
