dragon age inqusition has the war table technically, as long as you start the "quests" or whatever they are called, they take a certain amount of real world time to finish.

I just remembered Assassin's creed 4 has missions you can send ships on.

I'll make a list and update it as more get posted.

I didn't play the game enough to know how it worked but didn't Dragon's dogma have some kind of mission/quest you could send your followers on to build them up?

Also, what about the pokemon games? Was there some there some kind of trainer you could give your pokemon to to level them up? I seem to remember some kind of mechanic like that.

90% of all mobile games.

Of course, most of those I only believe are games in the loosest sense.

"games in the loosest sense" exactly how I feel about those. I'd rather avoid mobile games if possible, as those 90% are usually clash of clans clones and even clash of clans itself isn't very good, barely even a game.

I'm not going to count this one but Final Fantasy XI allowed you to bazaar (allow other players to buy items from your inventory).

In skies of arcadia for dreamcast, you could send a certain character to get items, etc for you but I think you had to use the VMU to control him instead of him doing it on his own.

Star Trek Online has duty officer assignments (or "doffing" as the players call it). Duty officers are minor members of your ship's crew that specialize in certain fields. You can send these officers on various missions to accrue in-game resources for you. These play out in real time, whether you're playing the game or not. Assignments will offer different amounts of rewards based on the rarity, length and complexity of the assignment as well as how skilled your duty officers are.

Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood both give you an income from buying buildings. You buy and renovate buildings in the cities and the more buildings you buy the more money you automatically earn every hour. Same with Saints Row the Third.

I guess Starcraft? Warcraft too. Any RTS with resource mining, so long as the resources last I suppose.
But may I ask why? Isn't part of playing the game you know...playing it?

Similar to what Dirty Hipsters said, I'm pretty sure Saints Row 1 and 2 also had that mechanic based on how many businesses you purchased. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning also had a rudimentary system like this when you buy certain player homes.

Eve Online has your character's XP (referred to as Skill Points in the game) increase over time regardless of weather or not you're logged in. This is because it will take a little over 19 years to train every single skill the game has to offer, and they are always increasing. As it stands you can have your training que up to 50 skills or 10 years length of training (though no combination of training skills will reach the 10 year mark).

The X (space sim) series is a great example, once you build up your trading empire you can just sit around with SETA on(time acceleration), and let the money flow right in.

Your pawn could be used by anyone in Dragons Dogma, whether you were online or not. They wouldn't levelup, but might return with new tactics to fight enemies, quest knowledge, gift items, or gear they were given. It synced in when you rested at the stone things.

EVE online with its skill training, you queue up the skills you want to learn such as advanced mining or how to use a new type of gun, and it takes real world time to learn, some a few minutes others could take weeks to learn, good thing the counter persists even if you log out.

GTAV - I didn't realise but I'm still getting income from the businesses I own, I end game'd about a week after release and picked it up last week after months of not playing to find I'm even more filthy rich than I was when I'd played last..

[edit]

Also, not money wise but Elite:Dangerous missions are counted in realtime, so if you log out before turning it in you've lost your bounty (or if there was a financial penalty for non-completion, you'll be hit with that).

Um... Most of the old city building/business sim games...

In fact, ages ago it was reasonably common to leave a computer with the game running on overnight to build up large amounts of funds.

This applies to stuff like sim city and transport tycoon (that one takes more care), and similar games, if you have a setup that's profitable, anyway...

You can also do something similar in X3:reunion, though again the risk here gets higher, because the game can throw a lot of random stuff at you that could mess it up.

Yup, all Saint Row games and GTA Sand Andreas got this. I earned so much from just spendi g time goofing around in that game.

Braely Default got something like this. You can rebuild a village while the 3DS is in sleep mode and the various traders will give you items every now and thdn after you complete rebuilding.

Is the OP only looking for games that do this while the game isn't actually running? Obviously any "real-time" game will have things happen while the game is on, even if you're not paying attention, but games that work off real hours and days and not the in-game clock are rather rarer.

The worst example for me is State of Decay, a zombie sandbox RPG which takes things away in real time. If you save and close the game because you need to go have dinner, you'll come back to find the neighbours you were protecting are dead. Bad things will happen to your community if you shut the game down for the night. It is a game that punishes you for having a life, and for that the developers can go to hell.
