I mean learned as in IRL stuff like history. For example, earlier Call of Duty games taught me plenty about WWII, and I always thought back to them if we were discussing that in school or whatever. Another one that I wouldn't have expected was Red Dead Redemption. On a US history test a few months back, there was a multiple choice question saying "Which of these was a major railroad" or something like that. When I saw that one of the choices was Union Pacific, I immediately thought of the Union Pacific Railroad Camp in RDR and got that question right.

Any similar experiences?

I learned quite a bit various mythology from the final fantasy series through looking into the backgrounds of the different summons. Also I was ahead of the curve in school in math and science due to all of the facts I picked up while gaming and all of the calculations I did while playing RPGs.

For me, the first to come to mind is Eternal Sonata, and the biography of Chopin. After every chapter, you see a sequence of photos accompanied by one of Chopin's songs, and a short history surrounding the song and Chopin's life at the time is relayed through some text. Every one of these presentations is relevant to that part of the story in the game, as Chopin's personal history is extremely important in understanding the themes. It taught me a lot about Chopin's sad life story and the Warsaw uprising.

I learnt from Fable 2/3 that you can get people to like/love you simply by doing silly dances or farting in-front of them for 5 mins.

There ya go you got it! :D
There's also a let's play of Putt Putt on Youtube that's kinda hilarious. Mostly to hear this grown man get frustrated with the game, I must admit.

I can't think of learning much from games, though- usually I already learned about a historical subject or something before a game comes out... -.-

Oh, wait, pokemon taught me a lot of words! Fissure, submission, seismic, crabhammer, you know.

If you like history of Rome, there's a series called Rome that's extremely historically accurate. Get it on DVD and watch the version with the little historical blurb- it makes snide comments at the character- like how the one in jail shouldn't just be praying to the gods of doors and locks, but hinges, too. XD

Not to mention math - critical hit is two times the attack power, represented by the HP bar going down twice as much...and playing it at 5 helped me get better at reading.

i've learn a lot of english in videogames when i was young. I had english class in school, but i got better than others because i was playing games (which were 99% of the time in english back in the 80's and 90's, now at least 90% of them are translated or subtitled) and that i had often to look in a dictionnary for words that i didnt understand, which helped improved my english vocabulary...

Rome Total Reality was even better. The whole Rome as four factions annoyed/confused me. RTR was right on the nail, but I get what you mean. Also, what the actual civilisations called their units in native language, that was pretty awesome.

AC2 taught me a bit about C15th Italy, so that was cool too.

Mass Effect 1 taught me to be more open minded about religious people. I was all set to romance Ashley Williams, found out she was religious and even though I have been a raging atheist my whole life, I let it go and now later on I find myself defending her religious beliefs. Years ago, I was the greatest atheist poster boy you've ever seen, now I'm open minded.

So what trips to churches and study of mythology and meeting new people in new places could not do, the single desire to get laid in a video game did. And I am a better person for it.

I'd love to be totally serious about a question like this... but come on.

What did I learn from videogames?

- Firing a weapon from the hip will get you killed (Call of Duty)
- Don't eat strange mushrooms; they'll make things swell up (Mario)
- When you have only one life, you don't take stupid risks
- An object in a vacuum will keep its state of motion until a force acts upon it (Vega Strike)
- Etc

They say that video games have no educational value, but I think video games do make you learn new things, just not stuff that can actually help you in life.

Battlefield 1942 and this strategy game called Combat Mission introduced me to World War II at the age of 8. From those games, I learned about the names and settings of most of the major battles in WWII, and I learned about all the factions during the war.

Call of Duty 4 gave me a tour of Prypiat, and Modern Warfare 2 taught me that you can cause an EMP effect by detonating a nuclear bomb in the Earth's atmosphere.

Left 4 Dead taught me that zombies are awesome.

Well in recnet years i look at pokemon with a much more mathematical eye and consider not only super effective attacks but the possibly difference in stats. i.e.
Geodude has hige defense but average special defense, use a non physical attack.
