Sonic the Hedgehog. Why, oh why did they have to make him speak? He used to be cool... then the games went 3d and the developers tried to make him cool, which blew away all his awesomeness and left him him with a grating voice and horrible lines. Also, as soon as they added another dimension, the games started sucking in every way, including gameplay, controls, story, even the new characters are lame...

Kingdom Hearts

The first was fine, what did they do with the second? "Hey, let's make a plot where people who are different should be snuffed out, fill it with emotional garble, and, oh, and the plot? Um, uh... Amnesia! Everyone should have amnesia! Yes, that works all the time!"

While I may not be the biggest fan of DMC, I found the DMC2 absolutely terrible.

Seconded.

Also, "Let's replace that magical happy feeling you get when you play the game with REACTION COMMANDS UP THE YINYANG! :O"

The end boss wouldn't have worked nearly as well without reaction commands though, and indeed a number of other bosses similarly. I quite liked the addition of reaction commands. The whole amnesia thing was explained in CoM as well iirc.

Even if the story did take a nose dive into the toilet, I thought they improved on the gameplay aspects.

There's a very easy way to resolve that particular issue: Rework the bosses so that the player is actually dealing the damage, not just mashing buttons to trigger mini-cinematics.

I don't mind the occasional reaction command sequence. Keeps things interesting. But every boss fight? No. Huh uh. I'm not havin' it.

I will agree that they improved gameplay aspects, though. Combat was pretty much amazing. I actually liked it more than the original. o_O

I agree with both varulfic & sokimit.

Sonic in the third dimension has felt like insult after insult to to the long term sonic fans, culminating in the two finger salute to the fanbase that was Sonic 06. At least the music has been consistently awesome though. Sonic heroes, Shadow the hedgehog & Sonic06 have phenomenal soundtracks that are always on my iPod.

And Halo.... Halo 1 was entirely self contained. there was no 'overarching story' to finish. There were aliens, and you killed them, then there were more aliens, and you killed them too. Great fun! but not the "Epic Saga" it was twisted into. Like the Matrix, the sequels were mere products of milking the cash cow till her udders bled.

Final Fantasy Seven. Say what you want, The fanbase ruined it. I liked the original because it was about revenge, love, and terrorism; over the incredibly played out emo overtones of Advent children and, who gives a fuck, the rest of the FF7 saga. The original game wasn't so perfect. Chrono trigger did random battles better by making them visible way before they would happen and you can bypass them; every person who worked on that game besides the guy in charge of the animal party member was apparently shot in the forehead. Vincent Valentine was an optional character and, therefore, not part of the storyline. Dirge of Cerberus was not canon. I HATE what the series has become and all have lost sight for what the original game was. I believe IGN said it was the "best game ever made." on the back of the freaking case, and that was in '97, before if things were sad, they were emo. I'll shut up about that now, Sonic adventure 2 was the last good sonic game.

Speaking as part of the FF fanbase, I'll agree it's been whored to the high heavens.

I thought Advent Children was excellent though. I also thought it would be a one time only kind of follow on deal though. Apart from AC, I've only bothered with 'Last Order' and I thought that was unnecessary. A 25 min anime of a 20 min cut scene from the game? Come on!

the pokemon franchise: i actually enjoy the sequels within the main storyline (and the fact that there is no actual storyline), but all the side stuff, like the resque dungeons, and pokemon ranger...blech...

and while this game didn't ruin the series, it was a little disappointing: zelda: twilight princess. I'm normally terrible at zelda games, always getting distracted by some side quest, or daydreaming during a battle (at which point i get raped in the nostrils by three redead), but twilight princess was so easy, i never once died in combat! my only deaths were when i fell off a cliff ad nausem. the bosses were pathetic, Ganondorf himself took like 2 minutes to beat, and while the story was enthralling, i couldn't feel the same magic as OoT or MM. with all the hype it got, i was just expecting so much more.

Right there with you.DMC 2 was just awful.I wonder how they got every other one just fine.
I believe DMC2 was supposed to be another game before it became DMC2, but because of the popularity of Dante they decided to scrap that idea and turn that game into DMC2. Funny how DMC3 was the first DMC game to be intentionally DMC from day one. But yeah I agree, Devil May Cry 2 wasn't very good at all. It was rectified with Dante's Awakening, thankfully.

Am I the only one who's going to say none? A game isn't ruined by it's sequel, I can easily go back to the first and have as much fun as I did before I played the sequel.

Yea I love FF7, but I found all but Crisis Core completely unnecessary. The ending to FF7 was perfect as it was but then they decided to make an ;all be it fun to watch, but shallow movie. Then follow it up with another pointless sequel..even if it's story was decent. Since Crisis Core was a prequel and details to events of the series most famous unsung hero, I enjoyed it and tolerated it as it was pretty much the only thing that was needed.
