Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Z
Total Annihilation
Dark Reign: The Future of War
Hitman: Codename 47
System Shock 2

I'd also say Duke Nukem 3D but I don't know if it had mainstream success or not. Either way, it's incredibly awesome.

Also I still have EVERY game I mentioned above, except for System Shock 2. I've never had that one. The ones I have are all in good condition, still. :D

If I'm going to list all of them, I'll probably be here for two weeks.
... Which is kind of depressing, when you think about it.

Why are these games so forgotten in the general public?

Diablo maybe, it isnt really well known to the mainstream so I could consider it a cult classic. Another one would be Vampire The Masquarade: Bloodlines. Came out a while ago, and while flawed, is a badass game with a pretty small but devoted fanbase

'Cult Classic' can probably be defined in a number of different ways, but for me it has to be a title that was (probably) a critical hit, a commercial flop on release, but nevertheless has a devoted group of followers. As such Deus Ex, Bioshock and Starcraft (especially Starcraft) can't be cult classics. They're good games, but were also massively popular at the time of their release, and often for some time after.

However, for the person who said

Hell yes.

I'd also like to add Anachronox, ICO (of course), Giants: Citizen Kabuto and, most of all, Sacrifice. Why didn't more people play Sacrifice?

Fallout before Fallout 3. Not saying Fallout 3 was bad, I loved it, but Fallout was equally as great, just never got real popular.

Maybe the Wild Arms series, though it may be a case of underrated as opposed to cult classic.

I'd say the Penumbra series is going to be a cult classic, hardly anyone I know knows about it - but those who do love it to death.

the mario/sonic/zelda/metroid/pokemon blablabla series (jeez u can be hating them but still they should be noted)
Cult classics? All of those series are among the best selling and most popular games ever

Sin & Punishment - never released outside of Japan until it came out on VC about 2 years ago but gained enough of a following to persuade Nintendo to publish the sequel worldwide

Its not out, Wont be out. Thus isn't mainstream. But everybody loves it and knows about it.

Its a cheeky entry, But I don't care :)

Not A classic yet but it would fit in a few years:
Ben There, Dan That! / Time Gentlemen, Please!
