I don't like the whole stoic, apeman protagonist thing. I'd like to play as an intelligent and interesting character for once. Like commander keen

God damn that sexy spaceman

Same actually. It would be nice to play as a normal, intelligent bloke instead of some muscle-bound idiot for once.

There's probably a fair list of normal protagonists. Just none I can think of.

The female side-kick love interest plot development... Can't a violent game just focus on blowing up half the world and growing your ego? Why do you need romance in the middle of it?!

The protagonist is some kind of godly force who saves the world billions of times from some ultimate evil. All by himself. Or maybe two or three friends with him/her.

Honestly, why can't a game have a plot where the protagonist has to build a large army to battle the ultimate evil, instead of going solo?

Well we don't really know how intelligent he is...
as far as we can tell, he's an apeman physicist mix. He pushes things into things and shoots things.

Plus he never says a word. Oh, and he has a pony tail.
I didn't find him very interesting :S

people saying "Black guy must die first." in L4D, annoying but hilarious to watch some ten year old playing Louis run straight at a Witch/Tank just so he can die first, even funnier when he's votekicked for it.
same here, that always happens. if i lose alot of health because the bot louis dont save me fast enuff, i shoot him. in the head. with my beloved shottie. then i let the others lift him up and then i behave normally.

He's got a PhD in theoretical physics, and he doesn't look overexxagerated in the muscular department on the official artwork, rather, he's pretty slim.
I'll give you this actually, he isn't your normal muscley protagonist. He's relatively interesting as a character too in my opinion...

Agreed. Why are all the characters close to the protagonist so helpless? It'd be nteresting if a different formula was used for once...

yeah you're both right
pony tail still throws me off a bit
why doesn't he just cut it off? It would be so easy...

The guy needs a massive flaw else he wouldn't be human. In this case it's his nasty hair.

Oh, for protagonists there's Jade from Good and Evil - she's a journalist (with just a smidgen of martial training, heh)

I hate the 'you're the only one actually doing anything' cliché that EVERY fps and rpg does - even in CoD4 you're doing most of the grunt work, single-handedly advancing the team. Gets a bit old. I mean, I've played strategy games, and I know that no commander sends a single unit off to take on the entire enemy army... unless it's a diversion or sacrifice... dammit!

I also hate the the cliche that, when the games a sequel, you apparently forgot all those fancy moves you used to save the world in the first game and have to learn them all over. I understand it wouldn't be fun to just start out knowing every awesome combo that can kill just about anything, but at least give a reason for why you forgot them. I saw somebody make a game where at the beginning the protagonist suddenly bangs his head on a hard surface and for the next three levels thinks his name "Sebastian, king of the Flying Mushroom Ninjas" I'd be happy :)

Tbh if a big game had the balls to do that in a sequel it should be hailed as revolutionary.

I seriously hate the current trend in brown, gritty graphics, especially in action games. And also the similar trend in showing dystopian, apocalyptic worlds where there's nothing but junk lying around.

To action game designers: give us a break from the preachy half-arsed philosophising about the implications of nuclear war and put in some colour and beauty! Then, at least, the action games will have something for us to WANT to defend. Even a utopia that's only beginning to fall apart, rather than already apart, would be cool.

Thanks for that. So far my list of why Metroid is such a good FPS series was:
1. Samus is hot.
2.

She's too pristine for a bounty hunter. She looks like she just strolled comfortably out of the stripbar where she works part time and just happened to fnd herself on a distant planet infested by killer aliens.
