What gaming genre needs to make a comeback?

I would add a poll, but I imagine there's too many genres to list and/or file under "other (please explain in post). The inspiration for this thread is a recent gaming party I had where we were remembering the games that made for the best experiences. Halo 2 cropped up (truly the best online experience, imo, but haters gonna hate) and a handful of other games including the Crash Bandicoot series under the reign of Naughty Dog. This got me thinking as to whether a specific genre needs to come back and release us from the "brown realistic marine warfare FPS" genre which is all the rage since the release of Halo 2 (it was popular before, but never to this extent).

I understand that games go through fads and that this will soon blow over, but my question for discussion is what genre should replace it? Which genre has enough fun and scope to make the next fad enjoyable to you?

My proposition is platform gaming and I'll try to say this without looking through the nostalgia goggles too much. I recently rented, played and beat Army of Two: The 40th Day in a 24 hour period (nearer 7 hours actual game time) and although it was short, I found it enjoyable. Using this and a handful of other FPS titles as my validation (due to their abysmally short completion time), I'd propose platforming games make a swift return. I recently picked up Crash Bandicoot 1 for the PSX (played on my PS3 in wonderful HD lovelyness, which means nothing when it's such an old game) and have been playing through it for quite some time trying to fully complete it. It dawned on me then that despite it being a short game, to actually fully complete it, I was taking a similar time to what I might spend on a FPS these days. Disregarding the multiplayer, I'd probably the same amount of playtime out of both. The difference being that Crash Bandicoot was damn fun! Like I said, maybe I'm viewing it through nostalgia goggles as a child from the 90's, but platforming games really are the most enjoyable (in my humble opinion). They don't need a compelling story to be brilliant (although they can have), they don't need overly brilliant graphics (but can have) and there's a lot of scope for variance.

So my question to you guys and for further discussion on my own opinion: What genre do you think needs to make a comeback? And if you think shooting games are all fine and dandy, tell us why. Let me know your opinions and hopefully we can get a hearty discussion going. I imagine this might be a rehashed thread, but I'm new here and there's always new opinions to consider :]

This is actually a pretty fresh thread. I don't recall anything like it.

As for the question: one of two. Either good old 3D platforming or the fun kind of FPS (Doom, Duke Nukem, Serious Sam). Or maybe both. Wanton destruction, collection of stuff, and ridiculous characters - what else could you want?

The Hardcore genre.

you guys remember back with all the deep gameplay elements that were, at best easy to learn hard to master. Back before everything got dumbed down so your grandma and kid cousin could pick up and play.

Point and Motherfucking Click.

I mean, Sam and Max is great, but we need more. We need so much more. And we need Tim Schafer to make some as well.

Hell, two of my favourite games of all time, The Longest Journey and Grim Fandango are both of this sadly forgotten genre. There really is no other genre that could tell a story as well.
I never played The Longest Journey, but I was under the impression that it was like Dreamfall. More RPGish...

OT: Honestly, I feel like all genres exist now in at least some form or other, they just aren't as big as they used to be. I would very much like more classic RPGs like Diablo, Baldur's Gate, and Titan Quest, however.

This, and a thousand times this.

Discworld, Monkey Island, Broken Sword... So many lost hours trying to solve the puzzles.

This basically states my whole opinion on this. The only other one I would say is classic survival horror. Oh, and good Bullet Hell games.

In my eyes, Resi 4 was brilliant, but it was too far from what I wanted in a Resi game, despite being awesome in its own right. Resi 5 was nothing like Resident Evil, and shit.

I think bringing back platforming games is a great idea. Especially if you're not all that good at them, but like them anyway, (like me), you can spend a lot more hours on it then necessary, and that might add frustration, but increase overall game length. With shooters, I can just blast through, and not even think. For what I think should make a comeback, well... Sonic. I'm sorry, but I still think that he might do something someday. Hopefully

I would say the "Adventure" game, but with Heavy Rain's success I think there will be more of those coming in the near future.

It would be nice if the only place I could find point and click games wasn't on a free games website. I like horror-themed point and click games, so I'll say those.

Furburt speaks the truth.

I'm told that Syberia 3 is in the works, and that's definitely a good start. Because Syberia has one of the best stories ever told in a game.

Unfortunately, Shamus already covered [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/stolen-pixels/7146-Stolen-Pixels-167-The-Solution-to-All-Puzzles] why point and click is not going to be truly revived.

Hmm. I've been stuck for fifteen minutes. Bored now. I'll just Google the answer. But now I'm just reading a FAQ and following directions, which defeats the entire point of the game. Why am I doing this again?p
*grabs cane, shoos damn kids off his lawn* I took two goddamn months to solve the Fire Marble Dome, and I LIKED IT.

Turn-Based Squad Tactics!

There aren't too many turn-based games anymore to begin with, and those that do get made are either large-scale like Total War or Civilization, or Japanese SRPG style like Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea.

What happened to awesome tactical games like X-COM, Jagged Alliance, and Silent Storm?

Have you checked out Dark Fall: The Journal. Nice and atmospheric. A really nice one published by The Adventure Company. (Who I believe made almost as much money as Cyan did off me.)

That's what multiplayer is for.
OT: Artillery games. I loved Worms and Pocket Tanks but I haven't seen any new ones.

Nah, Dreamfall is an action adventure, really. The Longest Journey is pure point and click.
Hmm, I might have to play it then. I found Dreamfall to be horribly programmed, like it was stuck together with Scotch tape, and very lacking in the 'fun' department. I think it was the god awful combat they kept shoving down your throat like a... Err nevermind.

Regardless, I could use a good point and click right now.
