Turn-Based Squad Tactics!

There aren't too many turn-based games anymore to begin with, and those that do get made are either large-scale like Total War or Civilization, or Japanese SRPG style like Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea.

What happened to awesome tactical games like X-COM, Jagged Alliance, and Silent Storm?

Both of these.

Anyone remember Golden Sun? That's what I'm talkin' bout!

A lot of "turn-based" style RPGs are losing their charm with unnecessary complexity, what with their "turn-based strategy but real-time combat"(*cough* RTS *cough*) - case in point, DA:O. Don't get me wrong, I love that game for what it is, but I really hope that this new style (which has also been in recent FF games) doesn't eclipse the classic turn-based goodness I know and love.

I know Pokemon games are still being churned out, but that's just one series that's exhausting itself out.

Also, Jak & Daxter is (not was, IS) the best platformer EVER...gimme more. I want MORE!
*foams at the mouth*
Golden Sun was pretty cool, but that's so totally not what I'm talking about. Golden Sun is just a jRPG, I'm talking about <url=http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq84/DurrHurr/stuff.jpg>stuff <url=http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq84/DurrHurr/like.jpg>like <url=http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq84/DurrHurr/this.jpg>this.
X-com was such an amazing game i agree we need more strategic gameplay.
On a completely different note personally i love a good flight sim, but none have really been made recently. i realize that they are really hard to execute correctly but a good one can be insanely fun.

I would add a poll, but I imagine there's too many genres to list and/or file under "other (please explain in post). The inspiration for this thread is a recent gaming party I had where we were remembering the games that made for the best experiences. Halo 2 cropped up (truly the best online experience, imo, but haters gonna hate) and a handful of other games including the Crash Bandicoot series under the reign of Naughty Dog. This got me thinking as to whether a specific genre needs to come back and release us from the "brown realistic marine warfare FPS" genre which is all the rage since the release of Halo 2 (it was popular before, but never to this extent).

I understand that games go through fads and that this will soon blow over, but my question for discussion is what genre should replace it? Which genre has enough fun and scope to make the next fad enjoyable to you?

My proposition is platform gaming and I'll try to say this without looking through the nostalgia goggles too much. I recently rented, played and beat Army of Two: The 40th Day in a 24 hour period (nearer 7 hours actual game time) and although it was short, I found it enjoyable. Using this and a handful of other FPS titles as my validation (due to their abysmally short completion time), I'd propose platforming games make a swift return. I recently picked up Crash Bandicoot 1 for the PSX (played on my PS3 in wonderful HD lovelyness, which means nothing when it's such an old game) and have been playing through it for quite some time trying to fully complete it. It dawned on me then that despite it being a short game, to actually fully complete it, I was taking a similar time to what I might spend on a FPS these days. Disregarding the multiplayer, I'd probably the same amount of playtime out of both. The difference being that Crash Bandicoot was damn fun! Like I said, maybe I'm viewing it through nostalgia goggles as a child from the 90's, but platforming games really are the most enjoyable (in my humble opinion). They don't need a compelling story to be brilliant (although they can have), they don't need overly brilliant graphics (but can have) and there's a lot of scope for variance.

So my question to you guys and for further discussion on my own opinion: What genre do you think needs to make a comeback? And if you think shooting games are all fine and dandy, tell us why. Let me know your opinions and hopefully we can get a hearty discussion going. I imagine this might be a rehashed thread, but I'm new here and there's always new opinions to consider :]
First of all, adventure games. It's basically a dead genre now. I liked them because their focus on story and puzzles, but apparently everyone likes killing each other in CoD and not paying attention to any adventure game. The last adventure game I think that was released was Fahrenheit and Syberia 2, and after that, no game.

And I would like old school games to come back, they are fun if made properly (Serious Sam, Painkiller).

RTS that are strategy rather then tactics based. The newer RTs with the focus on the battles and controlling them with no heed to the resource aspect are not as much fun as say the original Starcraft, Starcraft II seems to be the only one lately trying to do that.

Agreed! :D

Not really a genre, but a theme: BLOODY SPACE!
What's wrong with space? It's empty, so you can make the models as detailed as you want and a ten year old PC can still handle it. You can have the most absurd sci-fi stuff, and it wouldn't seem out of place. Aliens make for excellent villains, and exploration could actually be fun.
How great would a Freelancer2, Homeworld3, Master of Orion 4 (the this-game-doesn't-actually-play-itself edition), or another X-game be?

And some other things:
-good RPGs, either full D&D (or similar) rules, or hack 'n slash on the epic scale
-non-realistic shooters, you know, the fun kind where health doesn't autoregenerate, and you could be mowing down 50billion enemies
-games that are hard/complex enough to make your average braindead halo fanboy go back to his beerbong for good

GOD! I'm playing back through Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. not sure if anyone's familiar with the game, but it pulls NO punches! you can get in a random battle traveling for 5 minutes from one city to the next and you meet 4 or 5 things well beyond your level and you die. too bad. you meet characters that you could have on your team except you didn't put enough points into persuasion, charisma and intelligence, so you'll never find out they could've joined you. too bad.

I LOVE those old games for their intricacy and depth, as well as their difficulty. Demon's Souls was a good start, but we need MORE games like that!

totally, jack and daxter has to be my all time favorite game/series, it had racing, shooting, platforming, problem solving and wasn't ridiculously short.

Resource-gathering RTS games. I'm tired of wanting to play an RTS and then it's just the fighting... I want to build up a base, defences, and then go fight! There's not enough of these types of games... Age of Empires IV, or Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds II please.

I don't know if you can call it a genre but cheat codes for single player. And I mean the real cheat codes where you push a series of buttons to turn them on/off.
This. Well, this, and "speed cheats", where you have to complete a certain level in a certain difficulty to unlock a certain cheat (see GoldenEye 007, and Perfect Dark).

OT: Classic FPS. Not like Call of Duty, where you must complete different objectives, defend important areas, snipe other people. I mean, get from point A to point B, and anyone in your way gets obliterated.

While not a genre, bring back health meter. I cannot stress this enough. I'd say, bring back the GoldenEye health. I'm tired of being hit once, and have to sit in a corner for my shotgun wound to instantly disappear. Give me a certain amount of health, and what I lose, I can't get back. No health packs randomly scattered around the level, or dropped from dead enemies.

I'd like to see more than just Mario taking on the platforming genre.

NOTE: To anybody who is about to say that there are more modern platformers than just the Mario games, look up hyperbole.

Hmm. Decently varied and insane vehicular combat a la Twisted Metal. That'd be fun. And I mean Twisted Metal 2 since while Black was awesome I thought it was a bit too serious. I mean I want my demonic scourge, my evil ice cream clown, my grim reaper and my other colourful cast of characters. I mean Black's cast of insane asylum residents were interesting but bring back the fun of the past ones. I want to laugh again at the characters.

And I agree with the idea of cheat codes. Those were awesome. Bring those back for sure (optional for sure).
Definitely this. We need more Vigilante 8 sequels. God I miss that game. Arena-based demolition derby with a kick-ass soundtrack. Ah, the nostalgia.

space sim. Freespace 2, Star Lancer, etc

Man, that genre is so dead

An epic SciFi Empire builder like Imperium galactica 2 would be nice also, not that dumbed down shit of the last year or so

Champions of Norrath/Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance style RPGs for console. I haven't played Sacred 2, but that's pretty much it.

AND those FPS's where you just kill hordes of enemies with no real story. A console one with regnerating health would be so awesome!
