So i got Dragon Age Origins today and when i went to create a character i had to choose between Male and Female. For a change i chose to be female because, to paraphrase Shamus Young 'if I'm going to be staring at an ass for hundreds of hours, it might as well be [female]'
So when your playing a game and your given the option as to what gender you play as, what do you choose? Do you stick to the same as yours or do you deliberately play as the opposite sex?
I chose to play as a woman in Dragon Age because I couldn't get a male character to look anything else besides a horse faced freak with a retarded hair cut.
Both. Sometimes I want to play the male so I can like relate to the character, other times I want to play female so it is easier to look at the screen for longer periods of time.
I almost always go with Male, but sometimes I will go with who has better looking armor, usually male armor is more badass, but sometimes its just r-tarded and female is better 8D ATM on WoW, my Hunter is Female and my Death Knight is Male, so I guess I'm a "switch hitter" ;p.
EDIT: To the people who choose female cause its easier for them to look at for long gaming sessions, I prefer to look at a male. /scandal
When given a choice, I choose male. Seeing as most games that give you a choice are RPGs and I try to make my characters in RPGs a lot like myself, it only makes sense.
Usually in a game where they allow you to choose genders I'll do the first one as a guy. If I feel like playing through it again I'll pick a female character and then play through the game going "Uh-huh!" in my head like Billy-Bob Thornton in Sling Blade, to whatever is going on in the game.
Uh-huh, gonna save yer princess, gonna have fries with mustard. Uh-huh.
I play a male. I see my character as a representation of me. And I can't have that representation be a woman. Seems off. And as to the "staring at ass" argument, I spend pretty much no time at all watching my character's ass when I'm playing a game, it's weird, I know. But I'm busy playing a game, if I want to stare at an ass, I'll go do that somewhere else. But then again, if you spend your gaming time staring at your character instead of his/her surroundings, go ahead, you bloody weirdo.
When I play a role-playing game, I do exactly that: play a role. Henceforth, I never play as myself in a game because I play myself in real life. Besides, I know exactly how the game is gonna play out: I'm gonna be nice to almost any and everyone, and be surrounded by a trail of rainbow-colored flowers, bunnies, and butterflies, because I'm that much of a nice guy.
I have a ton of original characters to use instead, and , collectively, my female characters are far more versatile than my male characters. My (current) character in Dragon Age: Origins is a female knight with red hair and bears a striking semblance to Leliana; her core character is something akin to a spec ops law enforcer. The core character behind my FemShep is a former Marine with hopes of being a doctor; she's a lot smarter than she looks and is generally nice, but give her the wrong look at the wrong time and she'll physically help you be able to talk without you jaw being attached to the rest of your skull. She has an older sister wandering the Wastelands of Fallout 3, who's a big science buff so:
When it came time to help restore the water in DC back to its clear magnificent splendor,
she was all for it.
Playing as one my "daughters" allows me to experience the story through their eyes, with their personalities. And, *ahem*, I love a girl who can kick ass. Call it a weakness.
I play as whoever kicks the most ass. Sometimes it's the guy and sometimes it's the girl, but I usually play as a man (default) because that is my gender.
