When I play a role-playing game, I do exactly that: play a role. Henceforth, I never play as myself in a game because I play myself in real life. Besides, I know exactly how the game is gonna play out: I'm gonna be nice to almost any and everyone, and be surrounded by a trail of rainbow-colored flowers, bunnies, and butterflies, because I'm that much of a nice guy.
I have a ton of original characters to use instead, and , collectively, my female characters are far more versatile than my male characters. My (current) character in Dragon Age: Origins is a female knight with red hair and bears a striking semblance to Leliana; her core character is something akin to a spec ops law enforcer. The core character behind my FemShep is a former Marine with hopes of being a doctor; she's a lot smarter than she looks and is generally nice, but give her the wrong look at the wrong time and she'll physically help you be able to talk without you jaw being attached to the rest of your skull. She has an older sister wandering the Wastelands of Fallout 3, who's a big science buff so:
When it came time to help restore the water in DC back to its clear magnificent splendor,
she was all for it.
Playing as one my "daughters" allows me to experience the story through their eyes, with their personalities. And, *ahem*, I love a girl who can kick ass. Call it a weakness.
Male because although I'm a female and would find it easier to relate to a girl, the males in games are done better and stories seem more realistic with a male protagonist.
Either or. If I feel like looking at a nice arse for a while, I'll play as a chick, or go play Bayonetta. I tend to lean towards female because I don't give a flying fuck about roleplaying, those games are never immersive anyway, so I'll want something pretty to look at, at least. If I want a more badass approach, I'll play as a bloke.
Penises don't get rendered in-game(poly crunching and all).
I generally play a dude. Occasionally I'll create a female character when playing the game successive time to mix it up (and to have a psycho ***** running around smacking guys down).
I tried my first run through as a girl (that is, opposite sex). I got bored after awhile, as it's harder to see where you can get by trying to flirt with your party. So I chose male on my second run... Not much difference, but whatever.
It really depends on if there are any inherent differences between the genders for the purposes of game mechanics.
However when that isn't the case, it depends on the differences on the character models in that game, if the female character looks "badass" then I'll likely play as her, or if the male character is especially hunky, I'll play as him.
So when your playing a game and your given the option as to what gender you play as, what do you choose? Do you stick to the same as yours or do you deliberately play as the opposite sex?
Either gender.
It doesn't matter to me. Both are equal. Both can kill and be killed.
So why should gender make a difference? It doesn't. Still gonna use the character to kill enemies and try not to get killed.
I'm a male and I always pick female. Not really sure why, maybe it's the escapism factor as someone said above. Maybe because I find it easier to come up with female names (usually borrowed from other games, but still). Maybe it's the ass staring thing. Or maybe I have issues.
I play as a male because they are the superior gender. No I'm just kidding, I don't really know why I usually pick a male character. Probably since I'm male and it seems more natural for me to play as one.
