Just today I had something arrive that I had been looking forward to getting for a while.

It is a Bluetooth Watch with caller ID display [http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/c16c/].

Instantly started charging this baby, connected it to my phone, and have spent the past couple of hours showing family and friends this cool watch.

So, what gimmicky items have you bought that you were excited to get?

Captcha: Good for nothing.

Fuck you captcha, this watch is good for everything!

I bought a Sony Move. Fuck my life for that choice. Funny thing is I wouldn't be nearly as pissed off had they not ported RE4 without move compatibility. Have they even put out a single new move game in the last year that wasn't a DLC casual title? So much for supporting the hardcore crowd too.

Unless you're somehow writing your dissertation about the Nexus 7 it's probably a really weird reasoning. Not that I'm complaining.

Is a sonic screwdriver a gimmick or am I getting thrown out of the thread because it is actually only a toy?
Fine then, maybe you'll count an <url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduino>Arduino.

My dissertation is related to the various digitial security and I want/need a device with a relativly new version of android (that isn't rooted) to attack for my hypothesis

I feel your pain, got that thing the day it came out because of how awesome they made it look at E3 and haven't used it since. At least it taught me a valuable lesson of taking things I see at E3 with a grain of salt.

You should totally have done it about the security of the CIA headquarter's main computer , then you could have used the money to stage a brilliant coup instead of buying some stupid mobile phone.
Hypothesis: CIA data protection sucks
Assets: firefighter suit, mirrors, spandex pants, rope, floppy discs
Title: Data theft in the 21st century and its roots in 90's films aka Operation They'll Never Expect This

I saved up and bought a Biolite. It's a small wood burning stove that can charge small devices via USB, like a smartphone for example. I live in hurricane country, so I can sort of justify buying it. The reason the Biolite came about was to support third world countries full of people with cell phones but no power grid to charge them.

So I got a nifty little stove with a USB port on it (that I may probably never have to use in an emergency), but for a good cause.

I also bought a Mini BoGo light on Amazon (they're available at Home Depot now). A solar powered flashlight sounds like a gimmick, right? The Mini BoGo light has solar panel on one side which charges a single AA nickel metal hydride battery inside. If you pay the parent company for two, they send one overseas to a charity. The light is unbeatable. You can't focus the beam, but it's waterproof and light--a must for anyone that wants to be prepared.

Next on my list, a QDrum. Awesome! I'd be more than happy to pay twice the price for one if one gets sent overseas.

Unfortunately being English and not wanting to spend the time in one of those dreadful American Prisons (you can't get good tea for love nor money let me tell you) I figured it would be safer to do more ordinary boring topics. That and the fact I don't think the Ethics board would have let me do it, because it would be against British Values (not lying that is genuinely why they can stop us doing a dissertation)

I own an HTC EVO 3D android phone.

The 3D is awesome on it though. (plus it was $100 less than the iPhone 4s)

Silly me, forgot to check your country.
I can see why you wouldn't take that topic... someone else should totally do it though. I'm even willing to pitch in for a few floppy discs.

I'd suggest stealing the crown jewels in a Johnny English style coup but I guess that's a violation of your Values as well. And besides, all you need to do in your country to gain millions of sensitive costumer informations is open lost train baggage anyway.

Be fair I could just leave the entire thing on the train and that would be fine. Hel I may even get a job in government.... can't do worse than the current tossers in charge
