I love:
Sacrifice (one of my favorite games, it's a third-person RTS)
Spellforce (it's an RTS/RPG mix, get it in Platinum)
Supreme Commander (get it with Forged Alliance, I prefer the addon's missions and interface)
Total Annihilation (its spiritual forefather)
Age of Empires 3 (get it with the addons for a wide variety of cultures; this one focuses on Colonialism and Imperialism).
Dawn of War (the main game is the best, but I enjoyed the addons, too)
Warcraft 3 (get it with the addon)

Dawn of War 2 (I list it separately because it's more of a real time tactical game than an RTS).

- Starcraft Series (Starcraft 2 has a lot more newbie-friendly options to ease new players in, but you may want to start with Starcraft 1 + Brood War just to experience the story)

- Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne (Very newbie friendly)

- Homeworld Series (well, not really newbie friendly, but being one of the best space RTS's of all time makes it mandatory playing for any RTS fan)

My tip would be to hold off on any multiplayer plans you may have until you get a bit of a grasp for the mechanics. RTS multiplayer can be kinda unforgiving.
What this guy said. Well, I can't speak for Homeworld, but both Starcraft and Warcraft 3 are excellent. They're the best of the genre that I'm aware of (although I don't play many RTS games, so take my opinion with a grain of salt). A few missions are annoyingly difficult at times, but they rarely require more than a couple of attempts. If you're a neophyte, I'd recommend saving (in different slots) every five or ten minutes, though, just in case.

Just the title. I'd like some RTSs, but the thing is, I've never actually played one. What are some good titles for beginners? Here's what I have that other people recommended to me:

-Civilization series
-Alpha Centuri
-Total War series
-Starcraft

Any other suggestions?
For someone who is just getting into the RTS genre I recommend WarCraft 2(not 3). It teaches the player very well in that game and there is far less to keep in mind as you learn, as opposed to most other RTS games released since then. Many people in this thread are suggesting very good RTS games but the problem is the learning curve for many of those games assume the people playing the game have the experience learned from a variety of other RTS games that came before.

edit:

While I think Warcraft 3 is far more fun than 2, I'd say the second one has a far easier learning curve than the third.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the current Humble Bundle yet. You get Company of Heroes, which multiple people have recommended, its expansions, and a bunch of other games, as well as Saints Row 3 if you beat the average. So there is no excuse not to try Company of Heroes, as well as all those other games.

Command and Conquer, Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes (and their respective sequels etc.) are great RTS games. And Supreme Commander as well, though it's kind of complicated in just how large it is.
