What got you on the Escapist and why did you stay?

Just a lil', prolly silly topic of which might have already been asked but I was just curious since I couldn't find one on my first glance.

What is it, that got you here on the Escapist in the first place? How did you find to this place?

And secondly, why did you just end up looking and sticking around in the forums, if you didn't do so in the first place?

On my part:
It was Yahtzee. Simple as that :p A friend of mine showed him to me and I was hooked and his straight-to-the-heart honest reviews and that got my attention long enough to stick around for about uh... a year I believe. Then I registered for the Forums as I saw a few rather interisting ones at the time. As it is now I am usually looking through the Escapist next to every day, thanks to my job. Good time filler and Lunchbreak-killer.

As it is now I am starting to get more and more of some of the people here to know, discovered more videos and the following forum discussions and ever since then Escapist is my daily go-to page for entertaining, interisting articles and mind shattering warnings even.

I am glad I came here and am looking forward on many years to come with the Staff and the fellowship of The Escapist :)

My reason is the same as both of yours and probably what will end up to be the most common reason: Zero Punctuation. A friend showed me the ZP for Fable 2 and I found it to be the funniest thing I had watched in a long time. It helped that Yahtzee is honest about the game unlike almost every other reviewer.

My brother showed me the ZP for Alone in the Dark, and after a while I made an account. That and also I found out that Unforgotten Realms ended up on this website.

At the risk of being a lamb let me jump on the band wagon and say Yahtzee completely got me hooked on this. A few interesting forum posts got me to actually register but I wouldnt have so much as known the site existed (even after accessing it since my memory is incredibly selective and doesnt take time to remember things that dont immediatly grab its attention). I wonder how the rest of the people who run this site will feel when they see that Yahtzee generates all their traffic

My friends told me about The Escapist, and they kept saying how amazing it was. I joined to see what all the fuss is about, and now I love it here!

ZP and Unskippable are just added bonuses. The forums are why I am here. The community is great, minus the odd troll here and there.

i'm now far less interested in the videos. i still watch them, but the forums here now fascinate me...

I found zero punctuation on Yahtzee's web site while I was playing the Trilby games, right after he started making them. Eventually they migrated here, and I was drawn in by the thread titles in the "popular threads" list on the side - rather than the usual gaming forum "which is better cod or counter-strike" threads, there were insightful discussions of game content, gameplay mechanics, and industry developments. (I have recently noted that these threads are pretty much nonexistent here these days. Anyone know any forums that still have good conversations about these sorts of things?)

Let's see... I want to say that I came here before I'd even heard of ZP, but that would be lying... My friend coughCaptainChaosifycough showed me a few ZP videos and then I was hooked.

I also got into the other videos, and for a while, I thought that The Escapist was another YouTube clone, but only for gaming-related videos.

I never paid any heed to the "Latest Posts" and "Hot Threads" to the side of the videos, as I assumed that they were just listings for the comments sections of the various videos. Oh how wrong I was...

Finally, way back at midnight, on the 11th of April, 2009, something caught my eye: The Official Red Dwarf Discussion Thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.106295]. This was the weekend where DAVE had released new episodes of Red Dwarf, and I wanted to see what people were saying about it.

I clicked the link and was whisked away into a world of fairies and unicor... wait... *ahem*

I clicked the link, and I read the comments, and suddenly I felt the urge to contribute. This was a big thing for me; I'm not usually the kind to make accounts on internet forums, but make an account I did. I posted my thoughts on the new Red Dwarf episodes, and I returned to my videos. However, this time, there was a difference. Now, I had begun keeping an eye on the Forum Posts next to the video while it loaded, and anytime I saw something that seemed interesting, I opened a new tab. I must have ended up with forty tabs open.

However, I didn't post. And I continued to not post for two weeks. Instead, I was lurking. Trying to find out more about the community, read the guidelines, read some classic posts, figure out the layout. I wish more newcomers would do this, rather than launching straight into some mind-numbing repeat thread...

During my lurking days, I found that this community is full of bright minds, young and old alike, and the mods are very active. I came across a troll thread once, with three replies. I waited five minutes to see how many others would take the bait, and when I refreshed: 404

When I began posting, I realised that quoting and responding to others provided a whole new dimension to the site. Oh, this has gotten rather long, hasn't it?

CliffNotes version:
Watched videos, eventually noticed the forums, liked how people posted.

Sorry for this looooooong-ass post...

I watched ZP. Then I started using forums more actively, came here, watched ZP and saw "Jolly lord! This place has forums!"

I joined, and I've loved it. I have memories with this place.

Like just about everyone else here a friend showed me some Zero Punctuation and I had a look around and was hooked. I think it was that 30th episode of Unforgotten Realms that did it.

I'm going to be real original and say ZP. The Peggle review to be exact.
Started watching the reviews, noticed some interesting forum topics, started reading the forums, lurked for about 6 months, made an account, lurked some more, started posting (sporadically) and then today happened.

A buddy used to show me ZP all the time, I started coming and watching the other videos (Honestly, I like them all), started reading the articles, finally started reading forums and the people seemed like people I would like to talk to. I joined, and so far so good.
