I was just tjinking what happend to good platformes. It seems that all the good ones are stuck in the 90s and pre 05. I mean back then I could rabble off 4 times as many good platformers as I can now.

I'm talking the Super Marios, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the dragon, the Ratchet and Clanks, Jak, Prince of Persia, Psychonauts, Sonic etc.

Now all I can muster is The last Ratchet and Clank, Portal, and Little Big Planet.

Thoughts.

Search bar please. Hell, I was the one who made the last topic about this. Although it was on 3D platformers. But you're right, there is a lack of them. I have hopes for Brutal Legend, it's made by Tim Schafer, and seems like a really great game.

Dude, you can have more then one topic regarding a particular subject! You're topic on platformers wasn't asking where all the good ones went, was it? No. So this hardly counts as a duplicate thread.

Geez this site is swarming with search bar Nazis.

OT: Yes, I'd have to agree, platformers seems to be a dieing genre.

Hmm, I guess it's not in the developers' best interest for them to make a platformer. Most likely, a shooter and action game will be more mainstream, therefore sell more.

There was Mirror's Edge. Although that devolved into a shooter at points.

Trine looks pretty good.

Obviously the golden age of platformers was in the 90's, but there are 2 good ones coming out this year, so don't loose hope!

Trine and Splosion Man are pretty good looking platformers - try out the Trine demo on Steam if you don't believe me, it's actually pretty ingenious. Plus, there was LBP last year.

They're a dying breed, which is a shame, but there are still a few of them sitting about here and there. It's a shame that it happened, but there will always be platformers so long as there are indy game developers, so it's not all bad.

Ok you got me, no I didn't actually go searching for your topic. However, as you yourself stated, your topic was about 3D Platformers so my point is still valid.

Yeah, but he could as well search for the topic, then post his opinion that he misses the 2D too. This is almost the same, but with an add-on, as self-righteous as that sounds.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't count? Might not be the best platformer ever but...
Even the original Super Mario Galaxy is post 2005... as is New Super Mario Brothers on the DS...

Edit: and also, the fact that he can rattle off many great platformers from the 90's to 2005 but not as many from 2005 to now kind of reflects the difference in time span... (i.e. 15 years compared to 4).

Boo, I never fired a single weapon while playing through Mirror's Edge. That way, all the cops still got to go home to their families at the end of the day. I was nice like that, you see.

Still doesnt change the fact that there is room for more than 1 topic on the same subject, especially if the older one has died out.

Not to be petty, but the forum guidelines beg to differ. They clearly state that they'd rather want you to resurrect an old one than make a repeated one.

Yeah but you had since 05: LittleBig Planet, Super Mario Galaxy, Portal, Mirrors Edge, new Ratchet and Clank, New Super Mario Bros, Psychonauts, some Castlevanias and probably others no one bothered to play.

Won't say they all great and stuff, but platformers are still around, they just fading away, like point and click adventure games.
