I was just tjinking what happend to good platformes. It seems that all the good ones are stuck in the 90s and pre 05. I mean back then I could rabble off 4 times as many good platformers as I can now.

I'm talking the Super Marios, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the dragon, the Ratchet and Clanks, Jak, Prince of Persia, Psychonauts, Sonic etc.

Now all I can muster is The last Ratchet and Clank, Portal, and Little Big Planet.

Thoughts.
Search bar please. Hell, I was the one who made the last topic about this. Although it was on 3D platformers.
Dude, you can have more then one topic regarding a particular subject! You're topic on platformers wasn't asking where all the good ones went, was it? No. So this hardly counts as a duplicate thread.

Geez this site is swarming with search bar Nazis.

OT: Yes, I'd have to agree, platformers seems to be a dieing genre.
Have you looked at it? I guess no, cause I did talk about where they went.
Still doesnt change the fact that there is room for more than 1 topic on the same subject, especially if the older one has died out.
Not to be petty, but the forum guidelines beg to differ. They clearly state that they'd rather want you to resurrect an old one than make a repeated one.
Shut Up both of you! I didn't know alright, but we're here so lets discus.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't count? Might not be the best platformer ever but...
Even the original Super Mario Galaxy is post 2005... as is New Super Mario Brothers on the DS...

Edit: and also, the fact that he can rattle off many great platformers from the 90's to 2005 but not as many from 2005 to now kind of reflects the difference in time span... (i.e. 15 years compared to 4).
Yay but even if i change the years the 90 still win with a rocket propeld boot up 2000s ass.

And yay their have been sum, but they suck compaird to the old Crash and Spyro and don't call nestalga. I played them again a week ago and the Raped, Murderd and Canibalized Mirrors Edge, and the newer crash and spyro when it came to fun.

There was Mirror's Edge. Although that devolved into a shooter at points.

Trine looks pretty good.
Boo, I never fired a single weapon while playing through Mirror's Edge. That way, all the cops still got to go home to their families at the end of the day. I was nice like that, you see.
Even at the end fight that
had several machine gunners and everyone wearing armor?

Basically people played Super Mario 64, realized that was as good as platformers could ever conceivably get, and gave up.

Seriously, how could you top Mario 64? It's as close to perfection as a game has ever gotten I think.

Aren't you forgetting that recent, legendary and free platformer called You Have To Burn The Rope [http://www.kongregate.com/games/Mazapan/you-have-to-burn-the-rope]?

Because you don't want to miss that.

Oh yeah, Spyro and Crash are my all time favorite platformers!
But Croc wasn't all that bad either.
Those were the days indeed.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Dishwasher the Dead Samurai? Or are you talking about the annoying, repetitive 3d platformers that had you collecting x amount of a certain object to open a door so you can jump around more and jump into pits because the camera angles are so asstastic you can't see anything? N64 and Playstation, I'm looking at you. I'd just love to see more 2d platformers, but I could certainly do without the bulk of the 3d platformers from the N64/PS1 era. The last enjoyable 3d platformers I played were Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Psychonauts, and Maximo. But I would say three good games over a period of 7 years isn't a great track record.

I know what you mean, mainstream platformer games are rare these days.

On the other hand, the world of indie games has done wonders for the platforming genre as of late. Games like Braid made a silent impact on the genre; it's only a matter of time before developers realize they can make platformers unique again.

Trine also looks excellent, although I don't own a PS3, and my computer's basically shit.

I can suggest a handful of platformers. There's Trine,Braid,Mirror's Edge, new Bionic Commando, etcetera, etcetera. Plus, there's always Ratchet and Clank - a new one is in development right now.

But yes, platformers isn't too popular this days, shooters is all the rage right now.

Not since the Sly Cooper series have I been all that impressed with the recent offering of platformers. I think The Maw came closest to giving me that feeling of figuring out puzzles and timing patterns without all that shooting garbage games like Rachet and Clank devolved into.

I wish there were more puzzle style platformers out there to engage my brain and improve my twitchy surgeon hands.

How about I Wanna Be The Guy? That should take care of all your platforming cravings; whenever you feel like playing a platformer, just play that until you don't want to play platformers any more. Problem solved!
