star lancer , x-wing alliance , wing commander, and standing tall above all others free-space 2, plus plenty of others that i cant remember their names

can someone please tell me why the genre is almost completely dead?
and I'm not talking about a management Sim that happens to take place in a cockpit like X3.
I'm talking about plot you can sink your teeth into , battle that's fun and engaging. upgrade systems that keeps the game fresh.

what ever happened to the space Sim?!?

Unfortunately, it's dead, and Freelancer was the nail in its coffin.

Until the rumoured remake of TIE Fighter comes out, the genre will likely stay that way.

People became disillusioned in it because no good game were brought for ages. Then this continued a cycle which the ones that did come out were kinda shit which made people want to buy less of them and that just continued until it is now dead.

freelancer was fun.. for about 5 minutes
Not to mention it took a piss on its brilliant predecessor, called it rude names, then broke both his knees.

The space sim genre is too dull and slow for the caffeine-induced hipsters junked on counter-strike today.

In all seriousness they are a bit too dull and stodgy - ever played EVE online? Ugh.

One would argue they never really had a fanbase anyway.

That is most certainly not true. The X-Wing/TIE Fighter series was huge, as was Wing Commander.

I thought you were talking about realistic space sims like Microsoft Space Simulator (made by the people who made the flight sim). Also, I thought you were insane since Space Simulator was as boring as dry toast (all the realistic slow movement for hours, none of the danger of actually being in space).

Now that I see you aren't crazy I must sadly agree, the genre was slain by mediocrity. Even jet fighting games seem to have become less popular with time. Still, a fully tricked out new Wing Commander for my 360 would be cool.

The only x-wing esque game i played was Rogue Squadron on the N64 and while that game was fantastic, i'd hardly call it a "space sim".

However i am a fan of Darkstar One (the original not the shitty remake)

You'd think someone would go out and make one. There are enough fans of the genre that simply putting out a good game would do the trick. Hell, just revive Wing Commander, same gameplay, similar story line, better graphics.

I'm not talking about the arcadey Rogue Squadron games. I'm talking about the older series for the PC, proper space sims.

Rogue Squadron was to X-Wing as Mech Assault was to Mechwarrior 2-4; it shared nothing but the setting and some of the vehicles. The X-Wing series was a full on flight simulator, and it used every button on the keyboard -- two or three times, in some cases.

OT: I always understood that the reason space sims took off in the first place was that you could make them look good without being too hard on the computers of the day. Once computers got more powerful, the emptiness of space -- which is what made the early 3d space sims possible -- became a liability, not an asset. That said, I would kill for a new X-Wing or Wing Commander game.

If he done something wrong let me kick him too but I liked Freelancer so I wanna know what is your problem first.

These kinds of games meant that a huge universe had to be made. It had to have tons of content if it was going to be a good game, like the Wing Commander series. This meant that they are also extremely expensive to make, and more people like to be in direct control of the battle, having at least some ground based combat. A FPS is cheaper to make, easier to get a publisher to publish it, and is much easier to make multiplayer for it.

Until it was modded. Then you were flying around in ships bigger than planets...flying through asteroid fields in that was impossible though. But the large amount of mods were what got me to finish that game.

- It took a dump on the brilliant setting of its predecessor and rendered your actions in the first game completely irrelevant.
- The combat was boring.
- Navigation was dreadful.
- The ship designs were some of the worst I have ever seen in a game, space sim or not.
- The story (what little there was) was retarded.
- And much, much more.

Basicaly, they took Starlancer, removed everything that made it awesomely epic (anyone remember the mission to Saturn..?) and shat out an over-hyped, broken mess of a game.

Hopefully Yahtzee will save us! If he ever actually finishes it...Space Fighty Fly Game or whatever it's called...

On a plus side the inclusion of space combat in the new Halo...what's it called? I dunno, can't be arsed checking...Last Halo Prequel game will do for now...could be a back-door pilot for full space combat if it's well executed and well received (and if there is enough of a cross over between Halo fans and Space Combat fans), though as a non-Halo fan,I do plan to pick up Last Halo Prequel Game just to see how the Space Combat is pulled off...I'm hoping for good things, but I am not overly optimistic.

Hmmm... lessee...

LucasArts disappeared up their own arseholes.
Volition Inc got bought up and put to making other sorts of games.
Chris Roberts ran away to Hollywood.
Origin was murdered by EA.
Digital Anvil ham handed themselves into oblivion.

Also, relatively poor sales
