Its simple: George Lucas, being the notorious whore that he is, heavily over-saturated the space-genre with many lousy games, causing the space-genre to go bellyup.

what ever happened to the space Sim?!?
Hmmm... lessee...

LucasArts disappeared up their own arseholes.
Volition Inc got bought up and put to making other sorts of games.
Chris Roberts ran away to Hollywood.
Origin was murdered by EA.
Digital Anvil ham handed themselves into oblivion.

Also, relatively poor sales
That's a pretty good summary right there.

I've been playing space combat sims since the days of the TRS-80 and it's always been one of my fave genres.

I frequently regret that the Mass Effect games don't give you the chance to go into space combat with the Normandy. Instead we get the mind-numbing dreariness of the planet scanning minigame.

And another vote of confidence for Starlancer here. Seeing those capital ships breaking up before exploding was a sight to behold. There's absolutely no reason a good space combat sim can't be as satisfying as the best FPS.

Basicaly, they took Starlancer, removed everything that made it awesomely epic (anyone remember the mission to Saturn..?) and shat out an over-hyped, broken mess of a game.
Actually, Freelancer had been in development before Starlancer and the only ties it had to the latter were hastily shoehorned into it (Originally Freelancer was supposed to be a spiritual sequel to Privateer).

I liked Freelancer myself, personally, despite its numerous faults. It was a space sandbox, a subtype of a game that wasn't really being made even then. X2 and X3 are the only notable games released in that genre since then and they're broken, buggy messes of games.
