People became to dumb to appreciate the subtle humor that once existed in cartoons.
Jokes that leave you thinking, "Wait...what?" for a little less than a minute and then you think, "OH! I GET IT!" Then the LOLing ensues.

Nowadays, it's "HERE'S A JOKE. THIS IS WHY IT'S FUNNY. NOW LAUGH."

Fairly Odd Parents, everybody rips off that style, or that guy who does them is overexposed. Or some moral crusaders got to them. I loved whatever was on Fox Kids back around 1997 to 1999, you know stuff that usually ran for about a year or two, like Life With Lewie. Can't ignore the good stuff like Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy.

I'm too old for those cartoons now anyway... the new ones probably look bad because you've grown up since you watched those old ones. That's my theory and I'm sticking with it.

I agree with you. Nostalgia makes us remember the classics as great, but in reality we had horrible taste at the time.

pinky and the brain and the whole animaniacs crew, i miss them all so much. There are 1 or new good ones but i think cartoons and cartoonists are scared to try some thing new. Sponegebob became hugely popular because its complete idiotic crew so now every other cartoon as some sort of idiotic crew or cast to try and make it as big as SpongeBob so we are in a never ending loop of idiocy

Originality has been completley drained from modern TV. It's true.

Want proof? Watch a show called I-Carly on Nikelodeon. That show is completley devoid of original content. I haven't seen a single plot on that show that wasn't blatantly ripped off from another source.

Yeah, I miss cartoons... Hey Arnold, Doug, Angry Beavers, Rugrats, Rocco's Modern Life, Pinky And The Brain, Animaniacs, all the old Warner Bro's cartoons, etc. I used to live on that stuff, and now they have mostly crap on now. But there is one cartoon that I really appreciate, and that's Chowder. It has a lot of witty and intelligent comedy in it.

EDIT:

Yeah, the only good part about that show is Jerry Trainor, the actor who plays her brother. I'm hoping he gets his own show soon and that it doesn't suck.

Cartoons have pretty much always been terrible with a few exceptions. Just like gaming, we only remember good ones, or have nostalgia-dripped visions of old ones. I had a massive nostalgic period of watching all my favorite cartoons from my childhood about 2 years ago. They almost all turned out to awful. Cartoons aren't getting better or worse, but the potential for them to be better (just like with games) increases with technology.

That is an interesting theory, I never got why people liked Sponge Bob, it is one of those shows that actually makes you more dumb.

I dunno. Nostalgia's definitely part of it, but a few of the nostalgic cartoons people have mentioned so far have been ones that aged well...especially things like Animaniacs and Rocko's Modern Life, which had a ton of subtle jokes intended for older audiences.

Cartoon's haven't got any better or worse. You're just too old to appreciate them as much as you did as a kid.

Why are new cartoons generally bad? There are two answers.

One answer is simply that as an adult, your tastes have changed, and newer cartoons don't trigger that same feeling of nostalgia that you feel when you watch your favorites from when you were a kid.

The other answer is that people are more paranoid these days. Parents would look at a show like GI Joe or Exo Squad, they'd freak at all the violence in the movies. Heck, even with GI Joe they had to stick-in those obligatory "and now you know" segments at the end of the show. As days go on and on though, people become more paranoid. Another school shooting happens, and the victim is the quality of cartoons (among other things).

Personally, I enjoy a number of modern cartoons myself.

I blame the Pokemon and Yugioh series. Every damn cartoon show has to copy the hell out of these two. These series used to be good but they should have ended years ago.

I wrote a giant reply to this thread, but it got deleted when i tried to put a picture on it. It was perfect . Articulate and sarcastic and intelligent and brought tears to those who read it. But long story short Spongebob ruined it.
