What happened to cartoons?

I think it's more the mindset of children today - they aren't after in-jokes or subtle humour, they want straight up stupid funnies.

Then again, some shows work by capturing the souls of old shows in shiny new packaging (Transformers Animated - I love that).

I have to disagree with the people saying that it's purely nostalgia that makes us say that old shows were better.

When I go and dig up an episode of Animaniacs or Ren and Stimpy (shows I hadn't watched as a child, as my parents made a big deal out of not allowing me to watch cartoons), I really liked it. They were actually quite clever, and enjoyed them both thoroughly.

But three minutes of Total Drama Island, Spongebob, or anything else along those lines, and I'm overcome with the desire to throw cutlery at pedestrians.

We are getting progressively worse in all aspects of culture. I call for a new plague.

what happened to cartoons? why are all of the new ones(except a select few) terrible. what ever happened to shows like the angry beavers and rugrats? G.I Joe and thunder cats? what seperates the new cartoons from the old. what were your favorite old cartoons?
One of my favourite childhood cartoons was Tom & Jerry.... it's quite obvious what ruined that... political correctness.... Tom or Jerry can no longer smoke, some of the characters were removed as apparently they were stereotypical "black people", tom and jerry can't fight each other in certain ways anymore as it's not politicaly correct to do so.

In the end, it's all a load of crap aswell... I grew up watching this show every week and them smoking has never inclined me to smoke..... I'm not some racist biggot, in fact i'm extremely open minded with the majority of things..... I'm not a psychopathic mass murderer who can't tell the difference between cartoons and reality..... Anyhow rant over.... I blame Political correctness, and also just a general lack of good cartoon writers.

There's probably the same proportion of good:bad cartoons as there's always been.

I don't get Cartoon Network any more, so I don't watch anywhere near as much "kids'" TV as I used to, but I don't remember the schedule being as full of anywhere near as much rubbish as some people seem to be suggesting.

Sure, they weren't all multi-layered with jokes, but sometimes a little bit of ridiculous slapstick is all you want or need. They don't all need to be Avatar or Samurai Jack.

Yup.

Since Poland's been behind everything when it comes to cartoons, now I have good shows.

...Maybe except 50% of what's on Cartoon Network and... uhm... I don't have Nicko... and that God damn station that I can't remember. They seem to only show new Power Rangers, over and over, series after series.

WHY?! That's the most predictable show EVER! Only Ninja Storm did something originally... But then again, they just made one of the protagonists travel to alternative dimention, where Power Rangers are evil and destructive, but the antagonist is the mayor and is afraid to use his powers.

As I explained in the other thread, I think a lot of it is that you've grown up beyond the age of appreciating stuff like that. Part of it is that Cartoons were the boogieman of an ealier generation which is now in power so you've seen some heavy regulation on the medium.

All of the arguements that are made about video games currently had been made about violence in children's programming (Cartoons).

The same arguements were made about comic books even before that, leading the the comics code authority. Comics being one of the few forms of media that was able to go through a heavy period of regulation (a lot of it self imposed) and then recover.

I'm begging you, for the love of God, is there a site where I can watch it? I loved that show (and game on GBA, it was REALLY good), especially the episodes with that Scottish barbarian swinging a giant sword.

I'm too old for those cartoons now anyway... the new ones probably look bad because you've grown up since you watched those old ones. That's my theory and I'm sticking with it.
LMAO. You are NEVER too old for cartoons. It's that attitude that stops decent cartoons getting made.

Or didn't you like V for Vendetta, Maus, Watchmen?

EDIT: Or Peanuts, perhaps?

Yeah, pretty much.

But I think it goes like this:

Kids start reading around 4-5 (I started at 3, but meh). When they know how to read fluently around 7-8 (again, I was a freak), they start reading comics. At least, normal kids and usually males do that. Then, they waste hundreds of YOURCURRENCYHERE a year (yeah, that Donald Duck comic every week for 6 PLN equals 300 PLN a year... And I gave away all my comics) for them. Then, around 12-13, a kid (even I did that) starts to think "wait, toys and comics... isn't this a bit childish?" and stops doing that.

Then again, near 17-18, he sees that it wasn't childish. Toys? Sure, most of them are (except for that 13+ Lego, I love it), but comics? There are so many comics that adults read.

Same goes for cartoons. I was freaked out, because my sister and two cousins watch Dragon Ball. Now I know, why. If a show is good when you are 5, it will be when you are 18.

And now I feel old and I'm going to cut myself. With a razor. Probably, I hate shaving.

We have, but the point still stands. Writers are lazier now, just connecting one loud, obnoxious, gross-out gag to another.

Like movies, videogames and other forms of popular media, cartoons fell prey to 'corporate panic'(TM) Today, most cartoons are produced directly by or under heavy supervision of a few corporations who view cartoon as very serious business. And they want to play it safe, what means minimizing the probability of failure of an aired show.

They reach that goal by conducting huge surveys to find the lowest common denominator, relying on concepts proved as succesfull, minimizing the cost for animations and dismissing concepts, characters and plots which bear any risk or any chance of being offending to anyone.

The logical consequence of this attitude is what we see now. Less shows, imitating older or recent succesful cartoons, carefully adjusted to a target audience, political correct and often lacking creativity, an interesting universe or characters or just hilarious madness.

Another blight is the now common use of computer generated graphics, often making the cartoons looking even more pretentious. i am aware that is is no longer possible to go back to traditional animation for cartoons produced to minimal costs, but this does not mean it has to look like sh*t!

Imagine shows like Ren & Stimpy or Rocco's modern life would not have been aired yet and you would have to try selling them to a tv station.
Would you succeed? Most probably not. After a look at the f*cked up characters, the strange aesthetics and the abstruse humour not only aired at 6 1/2-8 3/4 year olds you would be dismissed faster than you can say "Ragnarok of western animation"!

That does not mean there isn't any creativity left. I really love Spongebob(after the first few seasons when the grotesque found its place in the show) and respect the efforts of Avatar and Teen Titans in telling a meaningful story, but that's about it. Not much more in modern cartoons to amuse me apart from a few chuckles here and there.

Well, just my two cents.

Once agian, webcomics have said it better than I ever could:

Cartoons today aren't allowed to have the essence of a legend anymore.

I'm happy enough with my memories. It's a shame kids seem to just get generic CGI crap nowadays. My favourites are Transformers, Stoppit and Tidyup and The Dreamstone. The Dreamstone in particular has a real special place in my heart.

This nearly makes me cry in all honesty. Kudos if anyone remembers it!

Yeah cartoons certainly have taken a nosedive. I remember when I was a kid there was SWAT Cats, Biker Mice From Mars, G.I Joe, Rocco's Modern Life, etc. What pisses me off was these were all good shows that got good ratings and they still got canned.

Today its hard for me to like the new cartoons. Avatar the Last Airbender and Teen Titans are the only recent cartoons that I can say I've liked, but they've run their course. Everything else has gone stale. The higher ups no longer care about making good, quality entertaining shows, they just want to make a profit and so long as people keep watching whatever crap they put they'll continue to make it.

Nil on the first three accounts I'm sorry my friend.

Peanuts though, now thats a different story all together. Oh yes I absolutely adore that particular comic. However its because its one you can appreciate on several levels, as a child I liked it because I remember laughing at characters like Peppermint Patty getting bad grades, as an adult (if you classify 21 as being an adult) I can appreciate all the subtle dark humour in those strips.

I have a good friend who'll happily watch things like Sailor Moon and Spongebob Sqaurepants all day long, so I guess you're right in saying you're never too old if you find something you enjoy.
