What happened to cheat codes?

Don't RTS games still implement tons of cheats? I remember a friend of mine who would just spam resource-filling cheats in all sorts of RTS's and build the uber Empire or space station or what have you, without breaking a sweat.

No, games like okami or katamari damashii are the epitome of that phrase, cheats although allowing you more freedom still don't really allow for much freedom when you use em with such constricting games as FPSs or GTA ones compared to the aforementioned games. There's no cheat on a FPS that will make it turn based or in GTA that will...give it an actual story lol.

"Tweak" cheats for the fun extras are fine with me, but I've kind of grown out of the other cheats, such as infinite health etc. I can actually beat the games without the help now, so I think the challenge helps justify the purchase.

Online play may have come into the mix as well for this generation. People may find their way around these things. You never know.

First of all, the Konami code with contra doesn't apply to what I was saying you dolt. Half the gamer population couldn't beat Contra with thirty lives, let alone 3. Also, doom isn't exactly my idea of a multi billion dollar project, but what ever.
Did I ever say it hurts me? I was giving my idea why Developers aren't including cheats on their enormous sacks of cash.
I beat contra with 3 lives when I was like... 14 :D but yeah I miss good old cheats to just fool around with, I mean I like how some games have unlockable stuff, but its just not the same anymore hence why I have a Genesis still.

I can see why some people are against cheats because they are apparantly 'too good' for them and don't bloody need them! (these people also need to be reminded that the real Zues will probably kick their ass if he catches them pretending to be him).

Forgetting the 'elite' branch of gamers for a second, I used to love cheat codes because they let you mess around with a game and just have fun with it. For example, Turok 2 with all guns and infinate ammo was pretty cool since that let you run around with the cerebral bore for an hour dishing out free lobotomies. Not very skillful, granted, but entertaining.

As some gamers develop bigger and bigger egos we will see even less of cheats (which are practically non-exsistant as it is), which would be a shame.

So much for the good old days of being able to have a giggle with games.

What happened? The internet happened.

In the old days, when there was no internet, a secret or a cheat code were exactly that: secret.

Few people knew them, and they were more valuable because such kind of information could only be found by word of mouth. Nowadays you have gaming magazines, cheat code books released every year, the internet... and those secrets lose the value they once had.

Cheat codes died when games became so easy that there was no need for them. Unless you have some sort of learning disorder.

Oh and GTAIV has cheat codes, never used them but I hear they suck.
They don't suck. But they're less.............original. Basically everything is for cars, cycles, or a chopper

And games aren't that easy jackass.
I find cheats to be the epitome of the phrase 'The games that are the most fun are the ones where you make the rules.'

Nowadays, I try to finish a game legit before I cheat the ever loving crap out of it.
I just cheat if the game is being unfair to an unbearable level.

games aren't that easy? I think the last game I failed to complete was the original Red ALert. It's not a bad thing that they're getting easier, Call of Duty is a good example.

Play on easy and you can just run n' gun, try veteran and you'll end up screaming at the console as you struggle to take every inch of ground. Of course, it's damn rewarding when you beat a level on veteran ^^

Actually...games have become both harder and easier at the same time. You've already given an example of easier, more good examples would be Mass Effect, Oblivion and Halo 3.

Eaxamples of hard games would be: Ninja Gaiden 2, Turok, Command and Conquer 3 and Guitar Hero 3/Aerosmith on expert.

Gameshark is my best friend, especially for games without built-in cheats. Sometimes I just want to stroll through a room full of gunmen, pick up a fire extinguisher and bash their heads in one by one, without fear of having to start over.

The industry has gotten away from user options and polished products, most games are rushed and under deved. its gotten so costly you can't even build a cheat device and make a profit.

Because there is no balance/fun in gameplay you need cheats and SP cheating to amke games fun but the focus of the industry is away from fun and solid SP experiences..... like what you can while you can gaming as it was is dead and say hello to interactive media thats as bad as the crap hollywood churns out for the sheep and tweens...
