Please quote where i said it was good. It was a simple question , because i made a realisation, it just hit me that i haven't seen a game over screen in quite some time. Please don't make me look like a nostalgia wearing retard for no reason. Also , there were game over screens on other things than arcade games . Playstation 1/2 games have game screens , N64 games have game over screens ,gamecube/dream cast games have game over screens , all but current gen games have them , and arcade styles games died out a LONG time ago.
First, I apologize if I offended you. Rereading my post, I did come across pompous. I assure you I didn't mean to treat you like a "nostalgia wearing retard." I'm sure you're not. I'm not a troll. But I'm sure you can agree that nostalgia for the "old ways" is very alive, especially with how popular the Yahtzee videos are on this site.

Next, I made that point off the fact that you said something along the lines of "it makes death seem inconsequential." I read that as an implication that you didn't approve. If that's not what you meant, I simply misunderstood you.

Now, those Dreamcast, N64, Ps1, NGC, and even some Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy have/had Game Over screens simply because they were still using the old Extra Lives system; which itself was born of the arcade. Simple as that. It's an old, dated system that really needs to retire. But that's just my opinion.

I don't miss them. It's a lot less frustrating when the game isn't rubbing it in your face that you've failed. It's easier to just let it slide and reload a save or checkpoint. I rage-quit a lot less frequently than I used to and I have to say that the lack of Game Over screens is definitely helping that.

Most people can't handle losing and more people play games than before. I understand that some people only want the game to walk them through the story, but does that have to mean we can't have more gamy games too? I don't think so. Some people like a light, easy and fun experience, others like to be challenged and feel like they have accomplished something when they finish a game. It just seems like the former group is getting smaller, at least compared to the latter. And that's a shame.

There should be room for both types of games.

I just realized something. Game over screens are becoming more and more rare.
Play harder games.

Last three games I've played with any gusto are DXHR, Catherine, Dark Souls, and Batman:AA.

There's game over screens. Maybe you should play games with them.

Respawning happened. It doesn't really sense to be told in bold, usually burning, capital letters that the game's over, then instantly spawning back to a checkpoint a few minutes away from your death point with no penalties out side of a minute long setback.

Game over screens died with the whole extra life system that was designed for arcade games to make kids pay more.
Pretty much this. A game can be challenging and make you want to try harder to beat it without the game singing in your face that you lost. The game over screen was just another gimmick to keep the kids there.

Too negative and jarring for modern gamers to handle XP
Seems the case, i'm honestly taken aback by the overall hostile of most of the responses so far, honestly considered game over screens as a fun little extra, see them as nice to have if they fit the game's theme.

Have been horrified by some game over scenes (ninja gaiden D: or conkers...) but never felt enraged from them as some here describe.

They're seen as something that slows the game down now. A lot of people hated getting a game over and taking 20 seconds for the screen to tell them they were shit and to try again. If you want an extreme example look at Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, literally the only bad thing I have to say about that game is the insane running time on the game over screen.

Personally, I find "Game Over" screens to be kind of a downer. Tthey're more demoralising than simply starting from the last checkpoint of save (even if might not actually be any gameplay difference).

I doubt I'm alone in this, and I'm guessing it's a significant part to it disappearing. Also, Game Over screens are heavily connected to coin-operated Arcade games, where they were used to tell the player that they just spent their coins(s), an will have to spend more if they wish to play more.

They're not completely gone! Minecraft sitll has one. Though to be fair it's not exactly a good example of modern gaming...

I really like the Arkham Asylum/City style of game over, with the villain taunting you, makes me want to try again, I won't let them have the satisfaction, as opposed to a simple "Game Over" where I just get pissed
I don't really like that though. It's like the game is scolding you for making Batman look bad.

The Witcher 2 has them... i see them a lot! There's nothing like GAME OVER written in nicely sized font sitting right in the middle of your screen to make you realize that you should probably save more often.

In Tropico 4 you get a "You Lost" screen, which is basically what you are talking about.

I always kinda liked the RE4 game overs! Leon gets brutalized by some spanish horror and the game goes: "See what you did? You died! You fucked up boy, and this is what happens....Try again! Or not..."

Theyr'e not entirely gone. ME2 has one, and so does RDR.

Too lazy to think of others.

Well you should be scolded. How dare you make him look bad!

With so many check points and auto saves, I guess game over screens get in the way of getting back into the action. Rpg's seem to be where you still see them most.

Dragon Age had the "Your Journey Ends" screen. Witcher 2 outright says "Game Over."

They're not gone, they just don't END your game any more.
