im thinking of trying stranglehold out because it looks like a good story
Well, I can't argue with that. Online and achievements do seem to be the in thing, but hopefully they'll take a back seat with the next slew of games we get.
Stranglehold is good fun. And you can get it for £4 in Blockbuster. So nothing lost if you think it sucks.

Maybe it's because they can't keep coming up with new ideas that work for games. They've exhausted all the good ideas already, so it's either attempt something that might not succeed or do the same thing as an older game.
I blame that particular aspect on gamers. At least, the loud ones who complain every time a game so much as has the same number of buttons as a previous game.

Look closer. In the sea of horrible games, many good games pass by nearly unnoticed. Personally, I see promise in the new batman game, the demo I played felt like the combat system was down pat (very fun, especially considering it is a stealth game).

Though, I actually like to mod games more than play, so mabye I don't actually have a say in such a difficult delemia as classifying a game as good...

Valkyria Chronicles for example was a good game that passed nearly unnoticed. Same with a lot of Nintendo DS games which are hard to find because of all the crap on the shelves at any given time. You can find them if you look hard enough.

I have been playing Final Fantasy VII and MediEvil, two games that I had played demos of as a kid but never truly bought and owned as a kid. Now I have both of them and I'm realising how old I am when MediEvil reminds me of 1998 to a tee. It is one of the key memories I have of the 1990s, and it is a good game, however it is frustrating, just as I remember it being.

On the fresh side Eternal Sonata is giving me a good time of it, almost beaten the rat boss and defended the precious bread from being eaten before it can be given to the poor. Oh J-RPGs, don't ever change your crazy quest premises...

I don't think it's a matter that "there are no more good games". Games are like movies, sometimes there are a lot out that you want to see and other times there are none. Because "good" games are indeed subjective, you may simply be going through a dry spell where the type of games you really enjoy are in a lull.

There are games like Okami that I still want to pick up and there are games soon to come out that sound intriguing like Heavy Rain. But right now there isn't much that grabs me. But that's okay since I'm back to playing Oblivion right now! ;)

I'm sure there are some good games under the huge pile of junk, however I wouldn't consider any of them great. It's just for the money when the developers produce crap and lame copy's of older games.

Just be happy you didn't pick the Wii out of all. The virtual console games are alot better than the Wii games.

I realized that there was not 1 game on the 360 that was worth £40 of my hard earned cash...
Congrats, that's why you shouldn't own one.
There's plenty of good games, they're just much...Different than old ones.

what's wrong with COD Modern warfare, or maybe Fallout 3 and possibly halo, although that might stir up an argument!

And you should always shop around, you should never pay top 'dollar' for your game
They're average.

Good>average.

And to repeat what others have said, most of the concepts have already been taken, all types of FPS have been made, RTS is not original anymore, it's extremely hard to come up with something brand new nowadays.
Yeah, I used to think that as well and was convinced it was why no games were coming out that I enjoyed.

Then, when I saw new things come out, or at least old ideas that I really liked rehashed with ideas that I thought I'd never see happen. For example, L4D. A fun game. It's not unique in that it's a coop zombie survival game, but the versus play is unique in that you get to play as the zombies while playing against real people.

And it was fun. But it was just average.

Then, or around the same time, EndWar came out, that Tom Clancy RTS where you can use a mic to control everything. It worked pretty well. It was fun, but it was just average. It was a new idea as well.

It turns out that a lot of games being made now are just average. There are a few good games being made, one you listed, but the rest just look like how an average game should be and, indeed, are just average games.

This gen you have:

The rare bad game
The common average game
The rare good game
The even rarer gem

And it's not nostalgia either. I'm still playing these games instead of new ones.

There are a lot of us who feel this way. There's something missing from games now that make them really, really good.

Good point, but like other people have said dig out the old games, even go back to an old console I always enjoy switching from the 360 to the P2S.
