In DA2 you can wear a headpiece but not have it show on the character. Never liked that aspect, if you don't want to see a helmet, accept that you won't get the armour bonus.

How masturbatory.

No idea if this has been said yet (couldn't be bothered to look) but this has always bothered me about Gordon Freeman. He's fighting HEADCRABS for fucks' sake, the clue is in the name. A species designed specifically to eat your head and then use the carcass of your body to find other people who still have heads in order to EAT THEIR HEADS. A helmet is your greatest ally against a species like this, and the HEV suit comes with one, yet he appears to have dropped it on Xen or something.

What are your opinions on this phenomenon?
Eyes are probably very difficult to render in a way that looks good, same with the nose and lips. Designers probably don't want their effort obscured by a mask.

In some situations, the better vision an un-covered head provides may be a greater benefit than the protection that a helmet does.
See also; why Imperial Stormtroopers suck.

Mostly its just an appearance thing, especially in games where you can customise your characters looks, why would you want him/her obscured?

This thread reminds me of that part in Gears of War 2 where Marcus and Dom start coughing because of the dust kicked up by the drill pod and Carmine tells them that they should wear the COG helmet because it's got a built in filter.

Of course, Dom tells him that he wouldn't be able to see snipers that well if he did...
