I have to agree with the OP; I cannot stand DoW 2. I think I played it for about 30 minutes and uninstalled it. Granted, I'm not a massive RTS fan and I never play them online, but still...

I at least found the single-player in DoW enjoyable, but in DoW2... it's just slow, boring and really not my cup of tea.

I hear lots of people like it though, so as long as they enjoy it, I guess it doesn't matter.

Yeah I gotta go with avykins on this one. Although the first DoW series was a lot of fun, there comes a time when you've got to try something new. Personally I like the fact that DoW2 mixes things up a bit in both single and multiplayer.

Also remember that DoW's first incarnation was pretty short and not all that brilliant either, it was the expansions that really brought it to life. Before you condemn DoW2, wait and see what they do with it. Maybe they'll listen to the player base. Stranger things have happened.

DoW2 isn't bad, it's just not as good as DoW or CoH were. And the upcoming patch looks promising.

I like DoW2. Not just because I like the gameplay, but I also like that the Relic decided to try something new rather than just make the same game with better graphics.

What happens next patch?
A map editor, eight new maps, and a supposedly massive list of gameplay changes.

They were trying to appeal to a larger audience by dumbing down the gameplay. It's known as the Casual Gaming plague, and it's been spreading like herpes through the development community. Valve's TF2 is another example of an awesome franchise gone casual. While it's still an "ok" game, its nothing compared to the former glory of TFC.

The thing I really like about DoW2, and in fact what makes me like it MORE than DoW1, is that it's NOT another RTS, where you just sit and mine materials then build up an army until you eventually kill the computer (note: I'm talking about Single Player). It's a Real Time Tactics game, which means you're actually determining what you do DURING the battle, instead of before and after. You have to determine use of cover, flanking, suppressing fire, all that. It makes it much more fun for me. But then, I've never really been a big fan of basic RTSes. They can be fun, but they get boring fast. DoW2 actually made you think the entire way through, it was far more engaging. Whereas DoW1, I was able to beat the entire campaign of Soulstorm as Tau using the same strategy for EVERY battle.

DoWII was great. OP, just because you didn't get what you thought you would get, doesn't make it a bad game.

It feels like a console RTS, therefore it is not great. It's far too oversimplified, so I actually disagree, I don't find it to be a great game at all. Great games are difficult and hold their appeal over a long time. I sincerely doubt DoWII will do that. It will be dropped and forgotten when the next real RTS is released. *crosses fingers for SCII*

Sometime this summer. They haven't really said, but there's going to be a beta test for it so probably in a few months.

Now someone correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't DoW2 do away with structure building? Had a great time with the first incarnation of the series and it's many expansion packs, but still haven't played DoW2. Relic did a goodjob with CoH though.

oh please, its called making a diffrent kind of rts, instead of the usual building the world constantly its more about fighting the battles, less about the logistics of it all, obviously you didnt play it multi player, which I will admit I didnt get into but mostly because I dont have the temperment for rts games multi player

You realize you're becoming one of those old grumpy curmudgeon who complains whenever anything changes, right? The sort of gaming grognard that the rest of the world condescendingly pretends to agree with in the hopes that you wont burst into a tantrum?

Dawn of War 2 is a damn fine game. It's not a game you enjoy obviously, and it's a big change from the originals. Certainly not the best game either, needs more units and maps in my opinion and the windows live matchmaking service I find terrible. But to be so sure that your own opinion is fact and that Dawn of War 2 is a terrible game, well, it just shows how close you've come towards becoming one of the above.

Change isn't always bad. By your sort of logic however we should all still be playing games through the DOS prompt because having to type commands and do your own scripting somehow makes games better because it's more complex (Hint: It's not fun at all and I'm damn glad it's gone!).

Besides, if you want a traditional base-building rts then there's Starcraft 2 in the wings just waiting for you. Although knowing the grognard sort, I'm positive you'll find something to complain about there too.

DoW2 is is what you get when a developer makes a good, fun RTS and then listens to the whinging fanboys that say it didn't represent the tabletop game it was based on because you're not meant to be able to build bases, for its sequel.

That said I like it just as much as DoW. As it has been pointed out, it's not just another sequel where they just added in new units and buildings to a new story and it's not just another generic RTS. They did something original for the sequel and did a pretty good job of it.

It isn't an RTS, is more part of a sub-genre. Instead of building bases, managing resources and up piling are large army up to then go crush anything thats stands in your way, it's more about micro-managing your smaller units and using different tactics in battles. So, sure you might not like this type of game, but it doesn't make it bad.
