I really miss splitscreen. That's one reason my friends and I like Halo so much; it allows four-player splitscreen, and allows those same four people to go into matchmaking as well. Some of my best gaming memories are from four of us clustered around my TV, teamed up online in Halo 3.
No. It isn't split screen you desire.
It's the effect of being in the same room as your friend while playing that you miss.

If you really think about it, split screen did nothing but reduce what you were able to see. It didn't add anything to the game itself.
Well, what other solution is there? Have everyone bring their own Xbox and TV? That doesn't really work. After all, what's the point of splitscreen except to get everyone in the same room? Splitscreen and and being in the same room are as connected to each other as computers and the internet; sure, computers don't require internet, but the addition of it brings much more to the whole thing.

Also, it's easiest to resolve debates about "noobishness" when your friend is sitting right next to you.

it's stupid?

it cuts the screen till you have practically zero visibility and makes the game overly difficult.
SIT CLOSER. call of duty is lame for not having halo's spiltscreen or gears splitscreen.

My preference is betrayed by my stern belief that an electronic approximation of my friend's voice ringing in my ear is not a suitable substitute for my actual fucking friend. The industry has this funny notion that online play is making gaming more social in much the same way that social networking is "connecting" people. In the end, I'm spending far more time alone when I game than I ever used to, just as a lot of people now spend more time buried in text messaging than they do interacting with actual people. Or watching the fucking road.

It's all kind of scary, really. We're clearly headed down the path laid out in so many dystopian futures, with faux interaction via technology slowly replacing genuine social interaction on the physical plane. We lose bits and pieces of what makes us traditionally human in the process, too.

Games these days are usually already pushing their console to the limits. Split screen is basically asking to process 2 lots of what's on-screen at the same time.
But at the same time, the resolution cuts proportionately, so the load isn't too much more.

If a console multiplayer game doesn't have split screen AND bots, I don't buy it. It's as simple as that.

This is why, even all these years later, Perfect Dark and Timesplitters remain the peak of console shooters.

I would love to see Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood to have split screen multiplayer, but alas and alack, I fear it won't.
Wouldn't plit screen kill a game where the point of multiplayer is to stealthily assassinate your opponants? It doesn't work if you can see yourself on the other person's screen. And don't anyone lie and say they've never looked at another person's screen to cheat in split screen.
Plit screen wouldn't, because lets face it, I'm looking, they're looking, everyone is. It's only a problem when somebody is being a major a-hole. When everyone is having fun isn't that what's important? I play with my brothers and we all know we're looking and glancing, usually unintentional. But the idea is for it to be... what's the key word here??? oh yeah, FUN.

But considering that you think it would "kill the game," you're probably one of those people who would totally freak out about somebody accidentally glancing in the general direction of your quarter of a TV screen in a video game.

90% of the time people whine about screen lookers is because they were watching the other person's screen at the time, and saw them do something they didn't appreciate... like a turn & fire around a corner. And 100% of the time it's worth just shutting off the game or kicking off that player because it's not worth hearing somebody ***** and moan about a damn game.

I desperately miss split screen gaming, and I'm more than happy to concede that my frame rate and overall look of any game may take a hit what with so many things being rendered. But what I miss is sitting around with friends playing together all face to face like. That's the reason I got into games and the reason my live account never got much use. I just don't get much emotion from games in general let alone from some jerk across country. Compared to your standard board game, I mean how many people get a real thrill from online monopoly? The human element is an undeniable attraction that we all miss when we aren't permitted to play in the same room.

Agreed.
I demand TF2 on the consoles gets an update that adds in split screen
Fixed that for you.
Agreed.
Anyone else agree that TF2 needs to get the class updates for the Consoles?
I really wanna play the class updates on my xbox

Damn online coming along and stealing split screen's lunch money. It's like they assume everyone has the ability to play online. Well, not everyone does, so why can't they release more games with split screen for those who'd rather play with friends in the same room?

I've noticed a trend. An annoying trend. A trend that is summed up in this thread's title.

So What game have you encountered that you believe should have had split screen that decided anyone who played multiplayer was obviously never going to be close enough to someone for the signal to reach(online)?
Section 8 probably stands out as something that would have greatly benefited from split screen. Even though it's online community never really took off the great bot-based multiplayer would have worked incredibly well in a living-room scenario.

It's criminal not to include it. Consoles come with support for between 4 and 7 controllers, why not actually make use of the remaining 3/6?
quick question? which consoles have the ability to go past 4 controllers?

it's not really split screen but i'd have kinda liked Dead Space to have had a co-op mode akin to Resident evil 5, simply because it plays very similarly.

Once upon a time in a developers office not so far away

a developer (lets call him Muffin) was sitting at his desk

Muffin had a problem, he wanted to bring in a larger profit so he called his friend (Hotdog)

Hotdog relised somthing

two players playing a game on the same console spent around £280 on a console, controllers and a game

but two players playing off two consoles, two games and two internet subscriptions (if they owned an Xbox) made almost double that

And so Muffin and Hotdog went on a quest to destroy splitscreen gaming forever....they then had cake.....and then cried

at least i think thats what happend :S
