I miss playing a co-op game in the same room as someone. Why can't game developers just combine split screen with online play. Then everyone is happy

The last games I played split screen and enjoyed were Halo 3, Vegas 2 and Burnour Revenge. Thankfully some games, like Brawl, Super Street Fighter IV and Left 4 Dead 2 still allow you to play games with friends without having to be sat on seperate consoles, probably in seperate houses communicating through a headset. I feel online only co-op and multiplayer has further destroyed any arguments you can make for games being sociable. Seriously, gaming parties have been ruined for me and my friends because we always hafta get an extra console, TV and extra copies of games to a friend's house, then spend half an hour downloading everyone's GamerTags and it takes maybe an hour before we even play anything!

i did a pole on this and almost every one liked it and wanted mreo split screen games
i wrote a letter to game spot and it got a massive response that filled a fair few letter boxes
so WHY ARNT YOU LISTENING DEVELOPERS WHAT MORE CAN I DO :(
What more can you do?

Firstly, you could should take a programming degree and learn how to make video games, then you might understand that split-screen requires the hardware to work twice as hard, and with modern games pushing consoles to their limits on their own, split screen just isn't possible without both screens taking a major performance hit. Most developers aren't willing to gimp their games to that extent.

You can't just write letters and expect them to change the laws of computer physics, but if you really feel passionate enough to write letters demanding change, then you should focus your energies into getting an education (so you can invent a way for a console to render 2 separate versions of the same game simultaneously without using any more resources or decreasing performance) and make the change happen yourself.

It's not the fact that the developers aren't listening, it's more like they heard you the first time and agree that it's a wonderful idea in theory, but are now just ignoring you because they don't have the energy to explain over and over again why split-screen isn't practical any more.

Why don't crackdown 1 or 2 have splitscreen?
Because it would be impossible to render two simultaneous versions of the sandbox on one console without both worlds taking such a performance & physics hit it would render Crackdown's touted "Playground of Destruction" unplayable.

Do you remember the split screen in GTA:San Andreas, and how player 2 could never move very far away from player 1? Now imagine the same limitations on a game with Crackdown's speed and jumping ability... both players would have to move and jump in the same direction in unison.

Online multiplayer does not replace local multiplayer! Online multiplayer does not replace local multiplayer!

Must I say it again?! It's a different feature. It's a different thing. One does not replace the other.

Simple, online play happened. Specifically Xbox Live/Halo 2 was the start, but the Halo series have always had 4-player splitscreen.

Its sad to see it go. Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 1+2 really could use it.

Ah well, I still have Timesplitters. Timesplitters is awesome.
Borderlands,LFD2 dose have local co-op i don't think you can go online with it though

It should definately be in there as an option. The only real reason to not have it is to force people to buy more copies of the game within their friendship group and increase revenue for games that don't *necessarilly* deserve it.

Imagine if there was a tennis game that came out that you could only play in multiplayer online: You couldn't even connect a second controller, you had to have another console and another tv and the game would then show you the reverse angle so you could play it.

It would be retarded and people would rightly protest.

Split the screens for those who want it!

Swings and roundabouts.

It works on some games but others it's just too small, or there is too much going on (like I found in GoW).
The splitscreen on CoD:WaW was just weird...it didn't even use the whole half of the screen.

I always thought though that games like CoD should have online splitscreen...

what I hate if it has on-line co-op and no off-line co-op I mean why. with some games I forgive having no off-line death-match like AvP because in that game it's mainly stealth based which can be ruined off-line by people screen watching.
