I've often wondered that too.
In the the film, the spider that bites Peter is just one of many that they were experimenting on, so Spiderman isn't really unique.
I'm sure that during the course of those experiments, they're going to wonder and test what effect their experimenting has on the spider's bite, and have one of those spiders bite a mouse, creating Spider- Mouse.
Because there's quite a lot of those super-power giving spiders, it's only a matter of time before someone else gets bitten and becomes a Spider-Person...Then they'll realise what's happening and the military will probably take over the project, creating lots of Spider-Soldiers.
At least in the comics, there was only one Spider, which meant Spiderman was unique, but the film kind of spoilt that by having lots of spiders.
