What happened to the original helicarrier?

The helicarrier we see in The Avengers, the nameless 67, seems to have disappeared from the MCU, and not just because it can cloak. We hear reference to it in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and there are the 3 Mrk 2 helicarriers in Winter Soldier (the nameless 42, 88 and 65), but we never see or hear from it apart from that one line in the show.

So my question is, where is it, and who controls it now?

The carrier was a throwaway plot device to begin with. Having it no longer be there doesn't affect the plot in the Avengers universe in any way other than being one less place for action scenes to happen.

And I'm sure it can easily be explained away by just a line of dialogue saying "It's under repairs, because a viking god and a big fucking green monster used it as a UFC ring."

But, but continuity. The continuity of continuity continuities the continuity.

In all seriousness though, I really want to know what happened to it since Shield is kind of going threw some stuff right now, and it's a very real possibility that it's in the hands of villains.

Plus, having a throw away line would work, but I think they would need something better then "it's taking longer to fix one then it did to build three". Maybe it's operating above Afghanistan with Warmachi- 'Iron Patrior'?

Couldn't it have been one of the 3 that get blasted in Cap America 2? Where are you getting their names from?

One of these three probably:

1. It got fixed up and is still in service somewhere, and we have yet to see it again because we haven't much reason to.

2. It was junked to make use of it's parts to build the ones in Captain America 2.

3. It was retrofitted into one of the ones from Captain America 2.

Regardless, it's not particularly important where the thing went. It was just a set piece that has served it's purpose.

Refittng and repairing can be more costly and time consuming than building a new one, depending on the extent and location of the damage.

It's not a bad or implausible excuse. Hell, they could even scrap it based on the same.

I actually referred to all 4 helicariers as nameless since none are ever given one on screen, but the numbers I got from them being painted on the side in large font like all naval vessels.

I guess #1 makes sense, but I think too much of it was still functional for them to just scrap it, especially since it was in a state where it was still functional in the field. And the 3rd seems unlikely, since ships don't tend to have their designation changed even after a generation-level refit.

And I know it was just a set piece, but the implication are still there: a Shield or Hydra remnant out there with a helicarrier which can cloak. That's the biggest security threat to the world until Ultron shows up, and I'd really hate for the writers to waste such potential. Really hoping the thing shows up in an episode of AoS (and Turn, Turn, Turn showed us they could afford do it at least once), or at least in Age of Ultron.

I get the feeling that the original Heli-carrier is all part of Nick Fury's Project Avenger remit, as such chances are given the events of what happened in Winter Soldier and that Fury sees The Avengers as quite important chances are that Fury took action to 'secure' the original carrier prior to the shit hitting the fan in Winter Solider.

To sum up, Fury will take command of the Carrier, it will be controlled and operated by folk he can trust, no doubt with one or two Hydra turn coats on board to shake things up when it makes a re appearance in Age Of Ultron.

Don't know, maybe Nick still got hold of it but unlikely given to the ending of the Winter Soldier film.

Maybe it sunk along with the TV show. That's probably it.
It's actually not doing badly. The US ratings have definitely declined, but the worldwide ratings are decent. Five million viewers weekly is nothing to sniff at.

They probably just haven't had any real need to trot it out again yet to appear in any of the movies (just like Thor & Iron Man don't need to turn up in The Winter Soldier) and that sort of thing is most likely outwith the budget constraints of the tv series. Though given the events of The Winter Soldier, I wonder if we'll be seeing it's like again in the MCU anytime soon.

Spoilers for the new CA movie, naturally.

Honestly I was expecting it to show up at the end of Winter Soldier and beat the shit out of its smaller and inferior cousins. I was disappointed when that didn't happen.

I don't watch Agents of Shield nor have I seen all the Marvel movies so I can't really speculate on what happened to it in-universe. But I do agree that it would be waste to just throw it away without explanation.

Not entirely, one thing that Nick has in common in both the movie version (based on the Ultimate version) and the comics version is that he's supposed to be a paranoid, master planner. He can't see everything coming, but tends to have redundant plans for everything, including "end of the world" events. Odds are he probably had a plan for "what happens if SHIELD is destroyed by something I don't see coming" and the seeds planted to re-build the organization. Something similar happened in the comics, for a number of years there was a "something is wrong in SHIELD" build up which lead to Nick Fury keeping an eye on his own organization, eventually things "got real" and there was a whole "Nick Fury Vs. SHIELD" event where he pretty much took down the entire organization. In the comics he resisted help from other super heroes because "This is SHIELD's mess, SHIELD will clean it up". He indeed rebuilt it, and for all intents and purposes aside from some comments about it "being rebuilt, and weaker than it was before... for the moment" nothing much changed.

I expect we'll certainly see more Helicarriers even if I think Cap destroying the three in the movie once they got control back was stupid. To put it bluntly the things get wrecked in the comics all the time. :)

SHIELD is also international it wouldn't surprise me if the other Helicarrier was overseas, or involved in some other event. Hydra which might not have been able to subvert that one might have wanted it far away until it got it's three into the air. If I had to guess, it would probably be over London helping deal with the aftermath of "Dark World" which seemed to leave some alien monsters around, and is the last place an alien ship was spotted. If I was writing it, I'd say that's where it is.

It's also possible it was too badly damaged after "Avengers" given the huge beating it took, and it was decommissioned and scrapped for parts. Sure, you wouldn't just retire something like that because a "new gen" version comes out when your dealing with something in a league of it's own to begin with, but there is a point at which damage is just going to be too extreme for practical recovery. I mean it lost jets, got shot at by aliens, had The Hulk go on a rampage through it... I think it hit a building at one point too didn't it? :)
