On topic, I am very open minded when it comes to the after-life. I do not believe there is no right or wrong answer. There is no one true path.

Here is what I believe: if someone strapped you to a lie detector and put a gun to your head and asked you to tell what you actually thought happened to you after you died, what would you say? I think heaven/hell/reincarnation/nothing is whatever you truly believe in. It may not be something you could actually explain, but if it's what you believe in, that's what will happen.

I'd definitely just tell the kid that I had no idea what happens after you die, and that anyone who says they do kills puppies. Yay for indoctrination!
Really though, I have no idea, and my best guess would be that you die and as the OP stated so well, my consciousness just no longer exists; however, I am terrified of the idea and wish with every fiber of my being that religion is right on just this one subject.
That then begs the question, is an existence of going through pain and torture for all eternity better than no existence?

The concept of a soul was derived from religion. It explains how we get into the after-life, since our body remains on Earth.

Though Atheists do have their own church, and the funny thing is, they also read the Bible. They don't believe in it, just that it has some good moral lessons.

No, they don't. The only thing that describes all atheists is that they don't actively maintain that 1 or more beings that could accurately be called "gods" exist.

*Some* atheists have a church, certainly. And some probably read the Christian Bible for moral lessons. But saying (or implying) that all atheists have some certain set of behaviors or beliefs above and beyond the unifying trait of atheists (namely, atheism) is as accurate as saying that all Christians believe in the doctrine of Papal Infallibility. Some is not the same as all.

Why are people so easily offended? Why the hell are you offended at what someone believes? Sure, religion is bullshit, and you can't just go around claiming unproven fairytales are true, but why should anyone give a shit that you're offended? It's not like him saying that has harmed you or anything. It's fucked up when people start imposing restrictions on speech because they're offended.

I wasn't being as eloquent as I wanted (as usual), so I suppose I'll explain that now: while I was offended, that is a personal issue and irrelevant to the conversation. I do agree with you, nobody knows. But I like to believe there is an after-life. Death isn't scary and it makes this life bearable.

I don't know what to say a kid at all about this topic. I think it depends maybe more on the personality of the child to begin with how they feel about death. I'm in my 20s and death still fucking scares me even though I'm aware of some of the philosophical arguments (such as death will happen no matter what, you didn't exist before you were born, etc) of why the fear of death is irrational and even though they are logical, I just can't seem to stop my emotional fear of it.
I think my consciouses will cease to exist which bothers the hell out of me but to me what is likely true is more important than what makes me feel good. I'm not one of those materialist that are fine with the fact of death. However, some people believe what I think is likely true and seem to live with minimal fear of death.
Some people actually hate the idea of heaven, (not even talking about hell) believe it or not. The idea of someplace were you have to be happy like some kind of illegal drug substance influencing your feelings for eternity celebrating some deity bothers some people.
Think of what the child's personality is like , and what will bother that particular child the least about death I think may be the best recommendation. I think my consciouses will cease to exist which bothers the hell out of me but to me what is likely true is more important than what makes me feel good.
