Its mostly a theological question.

I've noticed alot of people who start this kinda thread (or threads about religion and death and things of that nature which are beyond human comprehension) have no concept of god (or refuse to believe), whihc there is nothing wrong with.

But i jsut tell them what i was told (basic concept of heaven, though mine is more communistic really, but thats a different thread all together), and tell them that there really is no way of knowing. Death is like life, where you forge your on path in it.

But thats just me, Im Roman Catholic, so i kinda have to beleive it. more so i wnat to beleive it.
It isn't neccesarilly a theological question. It could very well be a biological question, or a scientific question.

All in all, I think a child's mind can not and should not try to fathom the concept of 'death'. Our (mostly) adult minds have enough problems to wrap our heads around 'eternity' and we have tons of elaborate stories of what might happen when the fat lady sings.

The truth is that we just don't know. That's the only correct answer to give.

I have been in a similar situation with my half sister. She asked me randomly while playing Mario Kart, so I was a bit off-put (And she nuked me with a blue shell).

I simply told her that I didn't know, and that no one can really give you the truth, because we don't know. My personal belief is... complicated :p.

I find the fear of death relatively natural, as it's something completely alien to us in many respects, lacking the proof we need to face it head on, or so I feel. However, it's inevitable, and as such it isn't a thing to worry about or fear. It will happen, accept it and move on.

oooooh, tricky,my advice is to stock up on religion here, afterlife wether you believe in it or not is very conforting,or if you think he can accept try "I don't know-nobody does"
I was going to say stick my fingers in my ears and sing lalalalalalalalalala till the child walks away lol but thats probly do that, as id probly end up telling him the truth if i didnt see that comment. Every thing dies its just a question of time and place so you might aswell live now rather than later to the fullest as I dont know what happens after you 'die'.

I beleive that after death you arrive at a gate, and the gaurdian of that gat would be someone(/-thing) who you feel comfortable around. And then this person takes you back through your life to show you all the thing you achieved.

Then on the end of the 'tour', when you arrive back at the gate, he presents you with the options available to you, depending on the choices you made - and the path you took - in life. These options are probably reïncarnation-related options, allowing you to choose between different species and races across all inhabited planets. So if you screwed up enough on earth you'd be able to go to another inhabited planet (and screw up there too).

I also beleive there to be an option allowing you some thinking time. This would being some sort of paradise-like place(i.e. heaven-like) where you get to go for a number of years to consider your options. This place too, would be shaped like a place you feel comfortable with. Although there probably won't be any worldly-distractions (like sex-related ones) here, because the time spend here is to rest, think about your life and make a decision to start your next life with.

There will probably also be a hell-type world where you can go(out of free will) for a certain amount of time to "repent" and increase the amount of options available to you at the gate.

Edit: I also think that, once your soul reaches the gate, you regain all access to your memories from your previous lives, to help you choose. after all, your body changes, but your soul doesn't. So I guess certain memories can be carried over through the sub-conscience, in the form of dreams, desires, hopes and character-traits. but you won't remember any of the previous lives you had.

i guess that says it all...I'd want to be a dragon.

2nd Edit: The beginning of Mogworld (Yahtzee) also depicts a nice way to ascent to the 'gateway'.

We go smelly and rotten, and eventually rise to eat our relatives for changing the will while you were senile and dying, or any other reason you feel.

I say, plenty of evidence for reincarnation, also for the existence of a soul, so I'd say we come back and get to do it all again. Either that or this:

" End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path... One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... And then you see it."

and that is what i am believing

I dunno. Personally I hope that we get reincarnated, which would be tits, but equally likely our conciousness is gone from the world, never to exist again.

As I don't like children either, I would tell them that you to a magical place where everyone you love is and there's unlimited candy and video games in the hopes they would kill themselves and thin out the herd a bit.

If you were offended by that, you have no sense of humor.
Hehe. Nice post. Several layers of humor. I liked it a lot :>

OT: Either tell them that I dont know, or tell them to think back to how it was before they were born: Death is like that.

Why are people so easily offended? Why the hell are you offended at what someone believes? Sure, religion is bullshit, and you can't just go around claiming unproven fairytales are true, but why should anyone give a shit that you're offended? It's not like him saying that has harmed you or anything. It's fucked up when people start imposing restrictions on speech because they're offended.

This is why people get offended with the heaven/hell concept.

As for 'imposing restrictions on speech', the church has been doing that for centuries.

I would quote some of Epicurus statements about death and say that the day he understands what Epicurus meant he will have a better idea of death and what that could possibly happen after it. The reason to this is that Epikurus make some arguments that are extremly reasonable and they view death in an way that dosen't make death an uncomfortable consept.

Evidence for reincarnation? Evidence for the soul? Really?

Don't take this as me being condescending or anything, but I've never encountered such evidence. I'm quite curious what it might be. Could you share?
