Let's have a bit of fun with this travesty.

Please theorise what on earth has happened to microsoft for them to take such a giant leap from all sanity.

Personally, I think the people we have seen promoting the Xbox one are actually disgruntled, mentally unstable employees. The real PR team and real new xbox are actually locked up somewhere in an office doused in gasoline.

Nothing. Its exactly the same way it was when I left, which is to say, mostly marketing employees and with the actual tech people bailing out by the truckload to write iPhone apps instead.

They are jealous of Apple. They've been trying to be more like them for years. It's a stupid thing to do, but what are you gonna do about it. You can't talk sense into these people. They've been so out of touch with reality since Bill Gates left the building.

Apparently all inter-office communication broke down so they all stopped talking to each other

They probably played indie games and went insane from an inferiority complex because of it
That would explain why they're shitting all over indie devs again this generation

Got it in one.

Between Windows 'fuck you PC you're a tablet now' 8 and now Xbone, they are desperately trying to be Apple while pissing off consumers.

Ya know how in some fantasy games and movies there will be a malevolent cult who are Hell-bent on bringing about the end times? You know the ones, they sacrifice virgins and gather the sacred stones or, realign the sacred statues because it was prophesied that a time will come when the signs show that the end will finally come? I can't help but think that Microsoft has made themselves the gaming equivalent of this kind of Doom Cult. Back in 1982 (was it 82 or 83?) the home video game industry crashed. Nintendo saved the world of home gaming and ever since the emergence of that shining grey box, mystics and scholars all the world over have said that another fall would happen again. Microsoft have taken it upon themselves to hasten the next Armageddon.

...

Hey...anyone else wanna spike up their hair and take a trip with me to the Microsoft HQ? For no specific reason? Preferably a healer? Also a tank...(I'm more a rouge personally)

Pretty much.
I haven't particularly liked a Microsoft product since Bill left. (Fuck you Windows 7!) I'm really hoping the Google OS turns out to be good, and sticks.

I may head back to the decaying corpse of PC gaming, and seeing if maybe it can become a viable market force again with all the bullshit I'm seeing from the console front.

Sony looks to be doing things relatively right with the PS4, (Other than the social media bullshit, it's basically the same as this generation, and the controller actually looks comfy for once.) but Sony's in such a poor financial state that they may go belly-up at any minute, and you don't want to buy a product that requires support from a near-dead company.

It's Microsoft doing exactly the same thing they've always done. Namely, thinking they can bulldoze their way into any market and walk away with the lions share of things.

This reveal was an absolute travesty and I for one will be delighted to see the results.

Welcome to the Game Industry of 2010+

Let me explain this as simply as possible: Because everything costs so much, the 'suits' in charge of everything are higher up the food chain at their respective companies; particularly this gen more then any other before. This means the gaming division at Microsoft has gotten so huge with their success, the only possible people in charge of it now are the people in charge of Microsoft itself. That in turn means every little asinine thing about video games (in some way/shape/form) has to go through them to, even if it's just a memo. Basically, the people most likely to know nothing about video games in that corporation are now the ones making all the decisions for Xbox.

Didn't it strike you odd that the entire conference had nothing to do with games or what the xbox could do for games? Of course not, that's not what "the data" says is relevant. The same data that says backwards compatibility is irrelevant and buying a used game is stealing. The same "data" that says people actually want skype and TV on their Xbox, because they skype and watch TV shows on their phone, hurrr. And that's the only thing these suits have in connection with the general public, "charts" and "data".

Summery: They are rich fuckwits who view you as cattle; wallets who say MOOO. You are just a stupid drone to them, an object that inserts money into their every orifice. You do not think or care about anything Microsoft does; you will feed them regardless because that's all you're good for. The every evidence of that attitude is all around you. Don't have high speed internet in your area to play our only-online console? Move! Don't have an HD TV to play our HDTV-only console? Buy one with your new Xbox, maybe get a swimming pool to! They simply cannot comprehend any other scenario.

Sony showed this attitude as well, they've been doing it ever since the PS3 released.
Can't afford an $800 console? Get a second job!
Remember that? Sony has toned it down considerably since then though, even if their out-of-touchness still lingered like a stanky fart during the PS4 conference.

I was thinking that an executive in the main corporation wanted to shut down the game division but couldn't get traction in the board room and couldn't get it done directly, instead they hired a bunch of idiots and incompetents and filtered them into the department. Then sat back and giggled as they wreck the Xbox brand.

I dunno. I like to believe in multiple-universe theory and I think that sometime during 2010 the Microsoft that belonged in our universe was dimensionally swapped for one that belonged in the Bizarro universe from DC comics, and has been attempting to fuck up every good decision their original counterparts have made since. It makes sense to me.

Sounds to me like the proverbial 10,000 monkeys on their 10,000 typewriters finally polished off the collected works of Shakespeare and found gainful employment in the Microsoft development team.

Or they could be running for political office! Our (Tory) PM recently referred to Tory hard-liners as "swivel-eyed loons", and abject swivel-eyed lunacy would certainly account for most of Microsoft's decisions with the Xbone.

Microsoft was only ever king of the mountain because of the way they got their start- by coming prepackaged with IBM computers back in the early days of PCs. By being the cheaper alternative, they got a massive user-base in the office market, and that has kept them rich ever since. Now that Gates has left, and people are realising that better alternatives are out there, they've become something of a dinosaur- a titanic beast that won't survive long in the rapidly changing technological climate.
