I recently altered my running routine to resemble HIIT. After a thorough ~3 km warmup there's a ~2 km speed endurance run on relatively flat ground (right through a populated area, I can more easily push myself while I think people are watching) followed by multiple runs up a mountain with steep inclines (some parts even have stairs).
I haven't been this exhausted after a workout since my first few months of running. Feels good.
