Well, they put the two weapon limit into common usage (some might argue that isn't that good a thing) and they're the only FPS I've seen where regenerating health actually makes sense.
I agree, also user created content was bar none for an fps for a long time might be that it still is.

For us it's set an example of how to make a console FPS and has given hours and hours worth of entertainment.

For me it's set an example of everything I dislike about shooters and has never risen above being just meh.

+1
I know im nitpicking now, but it was actually the shield that was renenerating and you needed medkit to get full health again.

Also OT, Halo was the game that kinda made the whole "Space Marine FPS" ball rolling!
This.

Also, thank you for pointing out that when Halo first came out, the Space Marine thing was indeed a pretty new frontier for gaming.

I can't tell you how much I hate it when someone looks at one of the Halo games and says something like,
"OMG, it's just another game about macho space marines! Why don't they try anything original?"
For the record I would like to point out that FPSes have always been about space marines (DOOM, Quake, UT(kinda) etc.)

Guys, I think OP means the canonical part; IE: The extended universe.

To answer that: The books are great sci-fi novels in their own right. Overall, the Halo universe is probably the most complex of ANY video game franchise, bar none.

Halo was the first game to ever use dedicated buttons for melee attacks and grenade use. In every game prior to Halo, grenades and melee attacks required you to switch to your grenades or fists/melee weapon. Those two seemingly small additions drastically streamlined play and allowed some greater, swifter tactical decisions.
This is one of the many things. I would like to stress that such decisions were made to create compelling FPS mechanics WITHOUT Mouse+Keyboard. Sucess in Halo wasn't about pinpoint accuracy, it was about strategically using these mechanics.

And with that they showed everybody else how to do an FPS on a console.

Hours of fun and hundreds of "Holy shit, did you see that!?!" moments that no other game has managed to replicate. There's so much that can be done in Halo that can't be done in any other game; epic snipes, barrel rolls in vehicles, taking out tanks driving solo in a warthog, and so on. Battlefield comes close to having those moments every once in a while, but COD never has them because all the fighting is very basic; see enemy, shoot enemy. In Halo, fights vary based on distance, location, weapon, vehicle, skill level, and so on. That rarely applies to any other game, and in any other game you never get moments where you're defending your flag with a pistol, an assault rifle, and a couple grenades, when a couple of tanks roll over a hill and, via creative maneuvering and some spectacular shots, you kill each of the drivers with three shots to the head each then continue to plant a grenade under a warthog, sending it flying in to the air and throwing out its two occupants, who you then proceed to kill before they touch the ground. That kind of spectacular, perfectly timed, amazing shit doesn't happen in any other game than Halo.

Also, forgive my epic run-on sentence.

For better or worse it basically gave us the modern shooter. I had tons of fun especially with 2 and Reach, so I'm glad they came around. Also, FUCKING GRENADES!

Two things:

1. The books by Eric Nylund are great. The others, particularly the one Eric Dietz wrote, are absolutely terrible.

2. Mass Effect. 'Nuff said.

Well the community is huge. Compared to other developers, Bungie made an effort to interact with the people that play their game.

The Halo games have shown us that pure marketing can convince people they are a masterpeice.

In the beginning Halo gave me a few hours of fun with a somewhat interesting setting. As a game the only thing Halo really did was combine good elements from other FPS games and weave them into a seemless mesh.

Thats about it I think.

To be perfectly honest it is still the base of any modern FPS. Regenerating health, Two weapons, etc. Also this is better since it's multiplayer is more around skil rather then reflexes (unless you're like me with a sniper shotgun combo.)

It brought me hours of fun and good bonding experiences with my friends. It also created the awesome and mighty Sangheili race which tower above all other things in existance with their unthinkable awesomeness.

Brought peace?
I think there have been more arguments and pathetic *****-fights since the Halo franchise was released, even worse when Xbox Live and online PC play became available than over any other series of games... I'd hardly call that "bringing peace"
Quick question: Ever seen "Life of Brian"? You should! It´s really funny! Lots of memorable quotes....

It gave me an okay story, fun and simple gameplay, and a load of fun hours from the release of Halo: CE to Reach, and multi-player. I don't think there's a game series that has given me more repetitive entertainment.
