I like to have some sort of background noise, it distracts my mind.

If i don't i suffer from terrible insomnia which is why i'm grateful druing the summer, i can have my fan on and it knocks my out like a light. I prefer winter weather but it's a pain to sleep.

In a perfect world, sex and cuddling with a girl.
It's true. Cuddling is a million times better than any glass of warm milk, soft music, or happy thoughts.
Cuddling and happy thoughts tend to go hand-in-hand, don't they?
Mm, definitely. Nothing like cozy physical contact to help you drift off peacefully.

OT: Since cuddling is out of the question for me right now, I help myself sleep by counting my breaths and focusing on a mantra repeated over and over. The Litany Against Fear [http://alcoman.railfan.net/fear.html] seems to be the most helpful.
You changed your username. Confusion ensued!
:33 sorry. It seemed to fit with my new avatar.

I escape...

I think about the fictional world I created...
My mind would probably get carried away and I'd end up just lying in my bed thinking about it's awesomeness until it was time to get up.

When you can't sleep what techniques do you use to help yourself?
Depends what the issue is.
I have a melatonon-deficiency that makes it hard for me to go back to a decent rhythm once I've "pulled an all-nighter" or similliar.
I just take a melatonin pill for that.

But other times your sleep might be disrupted by waves of thoughts, ideas and worries that flood your mind.
When that happens, only a knock-out sleeping pill would do the trick, and seeing as those give you a very poor quality of sleep I prefer to clear my head with something trivial and stupid. As an example, I'm currently 21 years of age, and I actually still keep my massive library of Donald Duck around for this exact use.

Breathing techniques help me. Start taking deeper than normal breaths at your normal breathing rhythm. Over about 5 minutes slowly slow your breathing rate. Once you are able to do the breathing without actively thinking about it, daydreaming while you do it helps it go faster.

If that doesn't work, booze helps.

What's up with all the masturbating, guys? Doesn't anyone in this thread have a girlfriend/fuck buddy/booty call girl? On this site? Jesus christ lol.

But yeah I usually just smoke some buds, or take this shit called Valerian Root. After like an hour it makes me pretty relaxed and euphoric.

Sleep meds don't work for me, music helped for a while but now it doesn't, listening to talk radio used to help but now it doesn't.

Now? Deadliest Catch on instant Netflix. Boringest show ever, thus the best sleep aid.

If I'm having trouble sleeping, I do a simple relaxation exercise. As long as I focus on it and avoid getting distracted, I usually drop off pretty quickly.
